This study is the first to use long-term average spectra (LTAS) to investigate resonance characteristics of dynamic speech in young adulthood and old age. A total of 80 speakers participated, divided equally by age group and gender. All elderly speakers were healthy, active members of the community. Measurement of the first three spectral peaks in LTAS from the first paragraph of the Rainbow Passage revealed significant lowering of peak 1 from young adulthood to old age in both men and women. Peaks 2 and 3 also lowered significantly across the adult lifespan in women and showed a tendency to lower in men. These acoustic findings are consistent with anatomic data suggesting that aging results in lengthening of the supraglottic vocal tract. Findings that women demonstrate more substantial lowering of spectral peaks with aging than men suggest that women may undergo more pronounced age-related lengthening of the supraglottic vocal tract. Alternatively, it is possible that elderly men systematically alter tongue position during vowel articulation while elderly women are less inclined to do so. Taken in conjunction with previous research, these findings suggest a "mixed model" of vocal tract resonance changes with aging in which an interaction exists between gender, the resonance effects of laryngeal lowering, and vowel articulatory patterns.  相似文献

We study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of disordered bcc CoxFe1-x, CrxFe1-x and MnxFe1-x alloys in their ferromagnetic phases using the Augmented Space Recursion (ASR) technique coupled with the tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. We calculate the density of states and magnetic moment of these alloys to show the variation upon alloying Fe with the other neighbouring 3d transition metals using arguments based on charge transfer, exchange splitting and hybridization effects. We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in a systematic way for several laser detunings ranging from -5 to -30 MHz and at different intensities, by monitoring the decay of the trap fluorescence. The dependence of the two-body loss rate coefficient β on the excited state ( 23 P 2) and metastable state ( 23 S 1) populations is also investigated. From these results we infer a rather uniform rate constant K sp = (1±0.4)×10-7 cm3/s. Received 8 September 2000 and Received in final form 19 December 2000  相似文献

We study nonlinear transport for two coupled one-dimensional quantum wires or carbon nanotubes described by Luttinger liquid theory. Transport properties are shown to crucially depend on the contact length L c. For a special interaction strength, the problem can be solved analytically for arbitrary L c. For point-like contacts and strong interactions, a qualitatively different picture compared to a Fermi liquid emerges, characterized by zero-bias anomalies and strong dependence on the applied cross voltage. In addition, pronounced Coulomb drag phenomena are important for extended contacts. Received 28 July 2000  相似文献

Ag particles of 3.9 and 5.1 nm mean size in silicate glasses were produced by ion exchange and subsequent annealing at 480 and 600 °C. These thermal treatments may induce stresses in matrix and particles in addition to the well known effect of surface atoms because of the thermal expansion mismatch of both materials. Structural characterisation of the particles by high-resolution electron microscopy revealed a size-dependent lattice dilatation quite opposite to the so far observed lattice contraction of similar metal/glass composites. This result, confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ag K-edge, is discussed in terms of an Ag-Ag bond length increase near the particle surface. The temperature-dependent EXAFS spectra (10-300 K) indicate an increased thermal expansion coefficient of the particles with an increased mean particle size calculated on the basis of an anharmonic Einstein model. With that the bond length increase can be explained. The results can be interpreted by a combination of both the particle size effects and the influence of the surrounding matrix. We have used high resolution transmission electron microscopy to determine the structure of gold nanowires generated by mechanical stretching. Just before rupture, the contacts adopt only three possible atomic configurations, whose occurrence probabilities and quantized conductance were subsequently estimated. These predictions have shown a remarkable agreement with conductance measurements from a break junction operating in ultra-high-vacuum, corroborating the derived correlation between nanowire atomic structure and conductance behavior. In this work, the multiplet splitting in terms of a spin-dependent model is analyzed. The spin-polarized and unpolarized single configuration Dirac-Fock-Slater wavefunctions have been used in the evaluation of the total energies of highly ionized argon with different L shell population The transition energies of hollow argon atom with initial configurations 1s 0 1/22s m 1/22p n 1/22p l 3/2 with m = 0 to 2 and n + l varying from 6 to 1 are reported in this work. The calculations have been carried out by taking into account a relativistic exchange potential in the Dirac-Slater potential. To account for the correlation effects, a correction term has also been considered perturbatively. The present calculations show that the spin-polarized technique which is mainly applied to the ground states of atoms may also be applied to atoms ionized in the inner shells with a good degree of accuracy. The static polarizability of cylindrical systems is shown to have a strong dependence on a uniform magnetic field applied parallel to the tube axis. This dependence is demonstrated by performing exact numerical diagonalizations of simple cylinders (rolled square lattices), armchair and zig-zag carbon nanotubes (rolled honeycomb lattices) for different electron-fillings. At low temperature, the polarizability as function of the magnetic field has a discontinuous character where plateau-like region are separated by sudden jumps or peaks. A one to one correspondence is pointed out between each discontinuity of the polarizability and the magnetic-field induced cross-over between the ground state and the first excited state. Our results suggest the possibility to use measurements of the static polarizability under magnetic field to get important informations about excited states of cylindrical systems such as carbon nanotubes. We consider the shape of crystals which are soft in the sense that their elastic modulus μ is small compared to their surface tension γ, more precisely μa < γ where a is the lattice spacing. We show that their surface steps penetrate inside the crystal as edge dislocations. As a consequence, these steps are broad with a small energy which we calculate. We also calculate the elastic interaction between steps a distance d apart, which is a 1/d 2 repulsion. We finally calculate the roughening temperatures of successive facets in order to compare with the remarkable shapes of lyotropic crystals recently observed by Pieranski et al.
