Sulfur hexafluoride as a mobile phase for supercritical fluid chromatography

Summary The capabilities of sulfur hexafluoride as a mobile phase for supercritical-fluid chromatography are investigated. An evaluation of its overall utility on the basis of separations of standard aromatic hydrocarbon odel mixtures performed on a variety of bonded-phase, packed columns with UV detection is presented. The dependence of separation performance upon operational parameters is also examined. A comparative evaluation of the chroamtographic properties of supercitrical sulfur hexafluoride and those of supercritical carbon dioxide is developed from these separations under corresponding supercritical state conditions.     

CROSS-LINKING OF AROMATIC POLY（THIOETHER）S

A novel cross-linking process using two high molecular weight aromatic poly(thioether)s,which were synthesized by the reactions of 4,4′-thiobisbenzenethiol with 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone and 4,4′-difluorodiphenylsulfone,respectively, and commercially available lower molecular weight poly(p-phenylene sulfide)was investigated.These reactions were carried out in bulk by the addition of silver tetrafluroborate andα,α′-dibromo-p-xylene at 190℃over a period of 45 min. Furthermore,the same procedure could be modified to cross-link compression-molded films of these three polymers.The thermal and solubility behaviors of these polymers before and after cross-linking reactions,are presented.

Fabrication and performance of a three-dimensionally adjustable device for the amperometric detection of microchip capillary electrophoresis

A microchip CE-amperometric detection (AD) system has been fabricated by integrating a two-dimensionally adjustable CE microchip and an AD cell containing a one-dimensionally adjustable disk detection electrode in a Plexiglas holder. It facilitates the precise 3-D alignment between the channel outlet and the detection electrode without a complicated 3-D manipulator. The performance of this unique system was demonstrated by separating five aromatic amines (1,4-phenyldiamine, aniline, 2-methylaniline, 4-chloroaniline, and 1-naphthylamine) of environmental concern. Factors influencing their separation and detection processes were examined and optimized. The five analytes have been well separated within 140 s in a 74 cm long separation channel at a separation voltage of +2500 V using a 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 3.5). Highly linear response is obtained for the five analytes over the range 20-200 microM with the detection limits ranging from 0.46 to 1.44 microM, respectively. The present system demonstrated long-term stability and reproducibility with RSDs of less than 5% for the peak current (n = 9). The new approach for the microchannel-electrode alignment should find a wide range of applications in CE, flowing injection analysis, and other microfluidic analysis systems.     

AROMATIC AND HETEROCYCLIC DINITRILES AND THEIR POLYMERS ⅪⅤ. STUDY ON THE CATALYSTS OF THE POLYMERIZATION OF AROMATIC NITRILES*

Various catalysts for the polymerization ot aromatic nitriles were investigated. It was found that Lewis acid-metal is a preferable catalyst system for the polymerization of aromatic nitriles, and the polymerization rate is about 10 times faster than Lewis acid alone. The polymerization rate of benzonitrile catalyzed by Lewis acid and different metals was measured, and the activity of metals was in the following decreasing order ,magnesium, zinc, sodium, calcium. Furthermore, the polymerization of benzonitrile catalyzed by different Lewis acid and zinc was also investigated.     

Oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons with oxygen in a radiofrequency plasma

The reactions of three aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, and styrene, with oxygen in a radiofrequency (r) plasma were investigated. Benzene was oxidized to yield phenol as a single volatile organic product. Similarly, toluene gave the ring oxidation products, cresols, as well as considerable amounts of methyl oxidation products, consisting mainly of benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol. In contrast, the oxidation of styrene took place predominantly on the olefinic double bond to produce styrene oxide On basis of the products and effects of reaction variables, r power and flow rates of hydrocarbons and oxygen, on the reaction rate, the oxidation mechanism was discussed, particularly focusing on the intermediate species responsible for the formation of major products.     

Determination of urinary organic acids by HPLC

Summary A high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of urinary organic acids and creatinine for following the metabolism of aromatic solvents is reported. After extraction of acidified, filtered urine with diethylether followed by evaporation, the dried residue is dissolved in mobile phase. Hydroxybenzoic acid is used as internal standard. A column of Nucleosil C₁₈ is used with a precolumn of the same material. The mobile phase is acetonitrilephosphate buffer, pH 3.3 (1783). For determination of creatinine the sample is simply diluted 10-fold and the eluate monitored at 215 nm (UV). This technique gives highly reproducible results and is simple, reliable and useful for biological monitoring.     

A new method for the synthesis ofN-methylmorpholinium 4-aryl-5-cyano-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates and their properties

N-Methylmorpholinium 4-aryl-5-cyano-2-oxo-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine-6-thiolates were obtained by the condensation of aromatic aldehydes, cyanothioacetamide, and Meldrum's acid in the presence ofN-methylmorpholine. They were then used in the syntheses of substituted 6-alkylthio-3,4-dihydropyridin-2(1H)-ones and 4,5-dihydrothieno[2,3-b]pyridin-6(7H)-ones. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Stereo- and regioselective synthesis of 1,3-diaryl-3-chloro-1-propanols via the reaction of aryl aldehydes with styrene and (E)-β-methylstyrene

Reactions of aryl aldehydes with styrene and (E)-β-methylstyrene in the presence of phenylboron dichloride regioselectively generate 1,3-diaryl-3-chloro-1-propanols and 1,3-diaryl-3-chloro-2-methyl-1-propanols in good to excellent yields with high stereoselectivity.
