Magnesium perchlorate as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of imines and phenylhydrazones

Magnesium perchlorate has been found to be an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of imines and phenylhydrazones by the reaction of carbonyl compounds with amines and phenylhydrazine in high yields at room temperatures and in short times. The condensation of less electrophilic carbonyl compounds with poorly nucleophilic amines affords the imines in excellent yields.

Conductometric study of Bu4NClO4 in propylene carbonate-acetonitrile and propylene carbonate-toluene mixtures at 25°C

Conductometric measurements of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in propylene carbonate-acetonitrile and propylene carbonate-toluene mixtures at 25°C are reported. Limiting molar conductances, association constants and distance of closest approach of ions are calculated. The experimental data were analyzed by means of the Lee-Wheaton equation. The Gilkerson's solvent-solute interaction energy term was calculated from a plot of association constant logarithmvs. reciprocal dielectric constant.     

Sodium Borohydride – Ammonium Carbonate: An Effective Reducing System for Aldehydes and Ketones

Summary. Reduction of aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding alcohols was achieved in a simple procedure using the system sodium borohydride and ammonium carbonate. This system needs lower excesses of reducing agent and leads to significantly shortened reaction times.     

ViscosityB-coefficients for lithium perchlorate in ethylene glycol-water mixtures

Viscosities and densities of lithium perchlorate solutions in different ethylene glycol-water compositions have been measured at 25.0 and 35.0 °C. From these data, the correspondingB-coefficients of theJones-Dole equation have been determined. TheB-value depends on the solvent composition and it reaches a maximum in the water-rich region. This behaviour is analysed in terms of ionic solvation and solvent structure.

Viskositäts-B-Koeffizienten für Lösungen von Lithiumperchlorat in Ethylenglykol-Wasser-Mischungen

Zusammenfassung Es wurden die Dichten und Viskositäten für Lösungen von Lithiumperchlorat in verschieden zusammengesetzten Ethylenglykol-Wasser-Mischungen bei 25 °C und 35 °C gemessen. Auf Grund der erhaltenen Daten wurden dieB-Koeffizienten in den entsprechendenJones-Dole-Gleichungen für die relative Viskosität bestimmt. DieB-Werte hängen von der Zusammensetzung des Lösungsmittels ab und erreichen im wasserreichen Konzentrationsgebiet ein Maximum. Dieses Verhalten wird in Hinblick auf die Ionensolvatation und die Struktur des Lösungsmittels analysiert.

     

Synthesis, structure and properties of delocalized transition metal chelates: Diazoketiminato chelates of Co(III) and Pt(II)

The reactions of HL 1 [where HL is 1N-(2-pyridyl-2-methyl)-2-arylazoaniline and is formulated as ArN = NC₆H₄N(H)(CH₂C₅H₄N); Ar = C₆H₅ (for HL¹) or p-MeC₆H₄ (for HL²) or p-ClC₆H₄ (for HL³)] with K₂PtCl₄ and Co(ClO₄)₃ · 6H₂O afforded the (L)PtCl and [(L)₂Co]ClO₄ complexes, respectively. The HL ligands bind the platinum(II) and cobalt(III) centres in a tridentate (N,N,N) fashion, forming new diazoketiminato chelates upon dissociating the amino proton. The X-ray structures of (L³)PtCl and [(L³)₂Co]ClO₄ were determined. Redox properties of the new complexes have been examined.

The construction and evaluation of a high pressure manifold and vessels for a Calvet type microcalorimeter

A Setaram C-80 calorimeter has been modified in order to measure the heat flow of energetic materials at pressures up to 69 MPa. A manifold and sample cells capable of operating at high pressure were designed, constructed and evaluated. This paper will describe, in detail, the high pressure manifold construction, safety assessment and calibration. As well, the results for initial trials with ammonium nitrate (AN), and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) at various pressures and heating rates will be discussed.     

Purification of plasmid DNA vectors by aqueous two-phase extraction and hydrophobic interaction chromatography

The current study explores the possibility of using a polyethyleneglycol(PEG)-ammonium sulphate aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) as an early step in a process for the purification of a model 6.1 kbp plasmid DNA (pDNA) vector. Neutralised alkaline lysates were fed directly to ATPS. Conditions were selected to direct pDNA towards the salt-rich bottom phase, so that this stream could be subsequently processed by hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC). Screening of the best conditions for ATPS extraction was performed using three PEG molecular weights (300, 400 and 600) and varying the tie-line length, phase volume ratio and lysate load. For a 20% (w/w) lysate load, the best results were obtained with PEG 600 using the shortest tie-line (38.16%, w/w). By further manipulating the system composition along this tie-line in order to obtain a top/bottom phase volume ratio of 9.3 (35%, w/w PEG 600, 6%, w/w NH4)2 SO4), it was possible to recover 100% of pDNA in the bottom phase with a three-fold increase in concentration. Further increase in the lysate load up to 40% (w/w) with this system resulted in a eight-fold increase in pDNA concentration, but with a yield loss of 15%. The ATPS extraction was integrated with HIC and the overall process compared with a previously defined process that uses sequential precipitations with iso-propanol and ammonium sulphate prior to HIC. Although the final yield is lower in the ATPS-based process the purity grade of the final pDNA product is higher. This shows that it is possible to substitute the time-consuming two-step precipitation procedure by a simple ATPS extraction.
