Preparation and evaluation of hydrophilic C18 monolithic sorbents for enhanced polar compound retention in liquid chromatography and solid phase extraction

Hydrophilic C18 monolithic polymer sorbents were synthesized for use in solid phase extraction (SPE) and in capillary liquid chromatography (LC). The approach involved incorporating both hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers into a monolithic material, by copolymerization of stearyl methacrylate (SMA), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) in the presence of selected porogens, to produce translucent mesoporous monolithic materials in bulk (SPE) or white macroporous monoliths inside fused silica capillary columns (capillary LC). A capillary column containing one of the hydrophilic C18 monoliths (i.e. poly(SMA-co-PEGMEMA-co-EDMA) with 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA) demonstrated nearly 35% reduction in retention of polycyclic aromatic compounds and greater than 40% increase in retention of phenols compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic column. In addition, the hydrophilic monolith demonstrated significantly improved resolution of phenols. Similar monolithic materials prepared in bulk were ground and sieved to obtain 45-65 μm particles with desired rigidity for SPE. To achieve optimum extraction performance for phenols, several parameters, including sample pH and volume, and eluent type and volume, were investigated. Under optimized experimental conditions, the method demonstrated good sensitivity (1.6 ng/mL LOD) and linearity (R(2)>0.97 for 10-200 ng/mL). Again, incorporation of 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA in the monolith increased the extraction efficiency of phenols in water from approximately 20% to 67-92% compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic material. Increased wettability of the sorbent by the aqueous sample matrix and the presence of hydrogen-bonding interactions are responsible for the improved retention of polar compounds.

Two novel 18-metallacrown-6 complexes: Synthesis,structural characterization and bioactivity

Two new macrocyclic hexanuclear metal(III) 18-metallacrowns-6, [Mn₆(acshz)₆(H₂O)₆] · 18H₂O (1) and [Fe₆(acshz)₆(CH₃OH)₆] · 6CH₃OH · 6H₂O (2), have been synthesized and characterized, where acshz³⁻ is N-acetyl-5-chlorosalicylhydrazidate. These crystal structures contain neutral 18-membered metallacrown rings consisting of six metal(III) ions and six acshz³⁻ ligands. The ring is formed by the succession of six structural moieties of the type [M(III)–N–N] through hydrazide N–N groups bridging the ring metal ions. The ligand enforces the metal ions to form the stereochemistry of a propeller configuration with alternate Λ/Δ or Δ/Λ forms. The largest diameters of the hexanuclear rings are about 6.97 Å at the entrance and 9.53 Å at the centre of the cavity for 1; and 7.94 and 10.24 Å for 2, respectively. The solution integrity and stability of the metallacrowns were confirmed using electrospray ionization ESI-MS and UV–Vis spectroscopy in methanol. Antibacterial screening data indicate the formation of the metallacrown 1 reduces the antimicrobial activity of the ligand H₃acshz hugely, while metallacrown 2 has strong antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis).

Direct observations of the leaching of a simulated nuclear waste glass in a radiation environment

The durability of the media proposed for the containment of commercial nuclear waste will be affected not only by the differences in groundwater composition that they might encounter but also by the changes that their own irradiation fields will make to these solutions. Experimental results that question the ability of current leaching experiments to predict the stability of nuclear waste composites are presented.     

LOM and HOM damping study in a superconducting deflecting cavity for ALS at LBNL

Superconducting deflecting cavities can be used in synchrotron light source to generate subpicosecond X-ray pulses while the impedance of the lower order modes (LOM) and higher order modes (HOM) in the cavity should be kept below an accepted level to avoid beam instability. These modes can be damped by adding waveguide on beam pipe. Detailed simulation of Q in CST Microwave Studio is introduced and experiment results on an aluminum model cavity with damping waveguide are reported to make a comparison.     

Injective hulls are not natural

In a category with injective hulls and a cogenerator, the embeddings into injective hulls can never form a natural transformation, unless all objects are injective. In particular, assigning to a field its algebraic closure, to a poset or Boolean algebra its Mac-Neille completion, and to an R-module its injective envelope is not functorial, if one wants the respective embeddings to form a natural transformation. On K‐Theory of Simplicial Rings and Degreewise Constructions

We give a measure of the difference between Waldhausen's definition of the Ktheory of a simplicial ring and the definition we obtain by extending Quillen's definition degreewise. This has computational advantages as the degreewise Ktheory sometimes is simpler to work with.
