Dual thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive network‐grafted hydrogels made of poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) network and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) grafting chains were successfully synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and click chemistry. PNIPAM having two azide groups at one chain end [PNIPAM‐(N3)2] was prepared with an azide‐capped ATRP initiator of N,N‐di(β‐azidoethyl) 2‐chloropropionylamide. Alkyne‐pending poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate‐co‐propargyl acrylate) [P(DMAEMA‐co‐ProA)] was obtained through RAFT copolymerization using dibenzyltrithiocarbonate as chain transfer agent. The subsequent click reaction led to the formation of the network‐grafted hydrogels. The influences of the chemical composition of P(DMAEMA‐co‐ProA) on the properties of the hydrogels were investigated in terms of morphology and swelling/deswelling kinetics. The dual stimulus‐sensitive hydrogels exhibited fast response, high swelling ratio, and reproducible swelling/deswelling cycles under different temperatures and pH values. The uptake and release of ceftriaxone sodium by these hydrogels showed both thermal and pH dependence, suggesting the feasibility of these hydrogels as thermo‐ and pH‐dependent drug release devices. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isobornyl methacrylate (IBMA), a bulky hydrophobic methacrylate, undergoes very fast polymerization, in bulk, with Cu(I)Br/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate system, at ambient temperature. IBMA also undergoes a spontaneous initiator‐free polymerization, at ambient temperature, with Cu(I)Br/PMDETA catalytic system in dimethyl sulfoxide–water mixtures. The rate of the polymerization is seen to increase with the water content up to 80 mol % of water. A possible intervention of air in initiation is proposed. The active Cu(0) formed by the disproportionation of Cu(I) species in aqueous medium probably plays a vital role for a possible air‐initiation of IBMA via single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) mechanism. A high tolerance level to water under SET‐LRP conditions is demonstrated. The poly(IBMA) samples obtained exhibit low molecular weight distributions (1.1–1.3). Similar behavior was not observed with other common methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate, t‐butyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, and benzyl methacrylate. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work the synthesis of poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) diblock glycopolymer and poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMAGl‐b‐PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) was performed via atom transfer radical polymerization. Monofunctional and difunctional poly(butyl acrylate) macroinitiators were used to synthesize the well‐defined diblock and triblock glycopolymers by chain extension reaction with the glycomonomer HEMAGl. The self‐assembly of these glycopolymers in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microcopy, showing the coexistence of spherical micelles and polymeric vesicles. In addition, the biomolecular recognition capacity of these micelles and vesicles, containing glucose moieties in their coronas, was investigated using the lectin Concanavalin A, Canavalia Ensiformis, which specifically interacts with glucose groups. The binding capacity of Concanavalin A with glycopolymer is influenced by the copolymer composition, increasing with the length of HEMAGl glycopolymer segment in the block copolymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxidation of sec‐alcohols was investigated with ruthenium‐bearing microgel core star polymer catalysts [Ru(II)‐Star]. The star polymer catalysts were directly prepared via RuCl2(PPh3)3‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), followed by the arm‐linking reaction with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate ( 1 ) in the presence of diphenylphosphinostyrene ( 2 ). The Ru(II)‐Star efficiently and homogeneously catalyzed the oxidation of 1‐phenylethanol ( S1 ) to give a corresponding ketone (acetophenone) in higher yield (92%) than the analogs of polymer‐supported ruthenium complexes. Importantly, the star catalyst afforded high recycling efficiency in the oxidation. They held catalytic activity against three times catalysis even though they were recovered under air‐exposure, whereas the conventional RuCl2(PPh3)3 lost the activity for same recycling procedure due to the deactivation by oxygen. The stability of the star catalysts during the recycle experiment was confirmed by detailed spectroscopic characterization. The star polymers also catalyzed oxidation for a wide range of sec‐alcohols with aromatic and aliphatic groups. The substrate affinity was different from that with RuCl2(PPh3)3, suggesting the unique selectivity caused by the specific structure. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrated sodium montmorillonite (Na‐clay) has been used as a catalyst support for the heterogeneous atom transfer radical polymerization of benzyl methacrylate in the presence of various concentrations of water, reducing agent, and CuBr2 in anisole at ambient temperature. The polymerization was promoted via reduction of CuII to CuI through the addition of sodium ascorbate (NaAsc) as a reducing agent in aqueous solution. The polymerizaton proceeded in a controlled manner and produced poly(benzyl methacylate) with moderately narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) when performed under optimum conditions of hydration (10 wt % ≤ H2O/Na‐clay ≤ 21 wt %) and reducing agent (0.15 ≤ [NaAsc]/[I] ≤ 0.23). The polymerization was uncontrolled if hydration and NaAsc exceed above their optimum range of concentrations. Apparent rate of the polymerization (kapp) increased in the presence of decane–anisole (1/3, v/v) mixture solvent. Selective adsorption of decane at the interfaces of the hydrated clay was attributed for the rate enhancement due to increased polymer and hydrophobic interface interaction. The polymerization progressed in a controlled manner as confirmed by the first‐order time‐conversion plot, linear increase in molecular weights, and moderately narrow MWDs over conversion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite latex particles based on homopolymers and graft‐copolymers composed of polynorbornene (PNB) and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) were synthesized in microemulsion conditions by simultaneous combination of two distinct methods of polymerization: Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Only one commercial compound (first generation Grubbs catalyst) was used to initiate the ROMP of norbornene (NB) and activate the ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA). Well‐defined nanoparticles with hydrodynamic diameters smaller than 50 nm were prepared with original morphologies depending on the monomer compositions, the type of combination (polymer blend or graft‐copolymer), and the conditions of microemulsion polymerizations. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical emulsion polymerization of styrene using PEG‐Cl as macroinitiator under microwave irradiation was successfully conducted and monodispersed nanoparticles were prepared. The PEG‐Cl macroinitiator was synthesized, and confirmed by FTIR spectrum. The structure of the PEG‐b‐PSt diblock copolymer was characterized by 1H‐NMR and the number of styrene unit in the diblock copolymer was calculated. The morphology, size, and size distribution of the nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). The effects of the ratio of macroinitiator and monomer, the ratio of catalyst and macroinitiator on the size and size distribution of nanoparticles were investigated. It was found that the diameters of PEG‐b‐PSt nanoparticles prepared under microwave irradiation were smaller (<50 nm) and more monodispersed than those prepared with conventional heating. Moreover, with the increasing of the ratio of St/PEG‐Cl, the hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) of the nanoparticles increased and the poly index decreased, both Dh and poly index of the nanoparticles prepared under microwave irradiation were smaller then those prepared with conventional heating; as the concentration of catalyst increased, the Dh of the nanoparticles decreased and the poly index of the nanoparticles increased. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined hetero eight‐shaped copolymers composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were successfully synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization, ATRP, and “click” reaction. The synthetic procedure involves three steps: (1) preparation of a tetrafunctional PS and PCL star copolymer with two PS and two PCL arms using the tetrafunctional initiator bearing two hydroxyl groups and two bromo groups; (2) synthesis of tetrafunctional star copolymer, (α‐acetylene‐PCL)2(ω‐azido‐PS)2, by the transition of terminal hydroxyl and bromo groups to acetylene and azido groups through the reaction with 4‐propargyloxybutanedioyl chloride and NaN3 respectively; (3) intramolecular cyclization reaction to produce the hetero eight‐shaped copolymers using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography techniques were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the resulted intermediates and the target polymers. Their thermal behavior was investigated by DSC, and their crystallization behaviors of PCL were studied by polarized optical microscopy. The decrease in chain mobility of the eight‐shaped copolymers restricts the crystallization of PCL and the crystallization rate of PCL is slower in comparison with their corresponding star precursors. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel and well‐defined pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymers were successfully achieved by combination of esterification, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), divergent reaction, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and coupling reaction on the basis of pentaerythritol. The reaction of pentaerythritol with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide permitted ATRP of styrene (St) to form four‐arm star‐shaped polymer (PSt‐Br)4. The molecular weights of these polymers could be adjusted by the variation of monomer conversion. Eight‐hydroxyl star‐shaped polymer (PSt‐(OH)2)4 was produced by the divergent reaction of (PSt‐Br)4 with diethanolamine. (PSt‐(OH)2)4 was used as the initiator for ROP of ε‐caprolactone (CL) to produce eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4. The molecular weights of (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4 increased linearly with the increase of monomer. After the coupling reaction of hydroxyl‐terminated (PSt‐b‐(PCL)2)4 with 1‐pyrenebutyric acid, pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer (PSt‐b‐(PCL‐pyrene)2)4 was obtained. The eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymers presented unique thermal properties and crystalline morphologies, which were different from those of linear poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). Fluorescence analysis indicated that (PSt‐b‐(PCL‐pyrene)2)4 presented slightly stronger fluorescence intensity than 1‐pyrenebutyric acid when the pyrene concentration of them was the same. The obtained pyrene‐containing eight‐arm star‐shaped dendrimer‐like copolymer has potential applications in biological fluorescent probe, photodynamic therapy, and optoelectronic devices. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) catalyzed by iron halide/N‐(n‐hexyl)‐2‐pyridylmethanimine (NHPMI) is described. The ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBIB)‐initiated ATRP with [MMA]0/[EBIB]0/[iron halide]0/[NHPMI]0 = 150/1/1/2 was better controlled in 2‐butanone than in p‐xylene at 90 °C. Initially added iron(III) halide improved the controllability of the reactions in terms of molecular weight control. The p‐toluenesulfonyl chloride (TsC1)‐initiated ATRP were uncontrolled with [MMA]0/[TsC1]0/[iron halide]0/[NHPMI]0 = 150/1/1/2 in 2‐butanone at 90 °C. In contrast to the EBIB‐initiated system, the initially added iron(III) halide greatly decreased the controllability of the TsC1‐initiated ATRP. The ration of iron halide to NHPMI significantly influenced the controllability of both EBIB and TsC1‐initiated ATRP systems. The ATRP with [MMA]0/[initiator]0/[iron halide]0/[NHPMI]0 = 150/1//1/2 provided polymers with PDIs ≥ 1.57, whereas those with [iron halide]0/[NHPMI]0 = 1 resulted in polymers with PDIs as low as 1.35. Moreover, polymers with PDIs of approximately 1.25 were obtained after their precipitation from acidified methanol. The high functionality of the halide end group in the obtained polymer was confirmed by both 1H NMR and a chain‐extenstion reaction. Cyclic voltammetry was utilized to explain the differing catalytic behaviors of the in situ‐formed complexes by iron halide and NHPMI with different molar ratios. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
