Sodium-23 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

With the availability of Fourier transform spectrometers, ²³Na-NMR spectroscopy has become an important tool. It affords direct insight into solvation and ion pairing phenomena, both in organic and in bio-inorganic systems. Monitoring the chemical shifts and linewidths of ²³Na signals gives access to binding constants, reorientational correlation times and the microdynamics of the sodium coordination shell. The binding of other cations can also be studied by ²³Na-NMR spectroscopy, in competition experiments.     

Optical spectra of an intracavity two-photon medium with sequeezed inputs

We consider an ensemble of three-level configuration atoms in an optical cavity, interacting through two-photon transitions with a cavity mode, driven by a broad-band squeezed input of finite amplitude. The atom-cavity system is coupled to reservoirs to describe the losses of the atoms and the cavity. Optical spectra in the transmitted and the reflected field are calculated and analysed in the good cavity limit, for the purely absorptive resonant case and the general case, respectively.     

Combinatorial invariance of Stanley-Reisner rings

In this short note we show that Stanley—Reisner rings of simplicial complexes, which have had a dramatic application in combinatorics [2, p. 41], possess a rigidity property in the sense that they determine their underlying simplicial complexes.     

Representation of elements of a sequence by sumsets

In this note the method of [5] and a result from [3] are combined to treat the following classical problem: Given a finite setA and an infinite sequenceS (both inZ), what is the minimal number of elements ofA whose sum lies inS? We obtain an upper bound depending only on the densities ofA andS (but not on their arithmetic nature).     

Glucomannan from Narcissus poeticus Studied by PMR and 13C NMR Spectroscopy

Native acetylated glucomannan of molecular weight (MW) 32000 with a glucose:mannose ratio 1:30 was isolated from bulbs of Narcissus poeticus. Glucomannan was depolymerized to a fragment of MW 15000 with an unchanged primary structure and was studied using PMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the linear chain of the biopolymer consists of 1-4-bound D-gluco- and D-mannopyranose units and the O-Ac groups are localized on C-2, C-3, and C-6 hydroxyls in certain anhydromannose units.     

Investigation of the phosphinyl analog of α-ketoglutaric acid

It was shown by³¹P and¹³C NMR spectroscopy that methyl(3-carboxy-3-oxopropyl)phosphinic acid (4-methylhydroxyphosphinyl-2-oxobutyric acid) (1) and the amide (2) of the latter exist in keto forms in non-aqueous solutions. In aqueous solutions an equilibrium between the keto,gem-diol, and enol forms has been observed. The proportions of the diol and enol forms increase as the acidity of the media increases. Silylation of acid 1 with hexamethyldisilazane gives the tris(trimethylsilyl) derivative of enol form (3) (Z- andE-isomers).Translated fromIzyestiya Akadetnii Nauk. Structural integration of tellurium oxide into mixed-network-former glasses: connectivity distribution in the system NaPO(3)-TeO(2).

Sodium phosphate tellurite glasses in the system (NaPO(3))(x)(TeO(2))(1-) (x) were prepared and structurally characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a variety of complementary solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Unlike the situation in other mixed-network-former glasses, the interaction between the two network formers tellurium oxide and phosphorus oxide produces no new structural units, and no sharing of the network modifier Na(2)O takes place. The glass structure can be regarded as a network of interlinked metaphosphate-type P(2) tetrahedral and TeO(4/2) antiprismatic units. The combined interpretation of the O 1s XPS data and the (31)P solid-state NMR spectra presents clear quantitative evidence for a nonstatistical connectivity distribution. Rather, the formation of homoatomic P--O--P and Te--O--Te linkages is favored over mixed P--O--Te connectivities. As a consequence of this chemical segregation effect, the spatial sodium distribution is not random, as also indicated by a detailed analysis of (31)P/(23)Na rotational echo double-resonance (REDOR) experiments.     

Spectroscopic Study of the Complexation of DDQ with 1,10-Diaza-18-crown-6 in Chloroform Solution

The formation of charge transfer complexes with 1:1 and 2:1 stoichiometries (acceptor-to-donor) between DDQ and 1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 in chloroform solution was investigated spectrophotometrically. The stepwise formation constants of the resulting complexes were evaluated from the non-linear least-squaresfitting of the absorbance-mole ratio data. The enthalpies and entropiesof the complexation reactions were determined from the temperature dependence of the stepwise formation constants. The resulting 1:1 and 2:1 complexes were isolated in crystalline form and characterized. The results are consistent with the ionic structure of the resulting charge transfer complexes.     

Can TMS and DSS be used as NMR references for cyclodextrin species in aqueous solution?

Tetramethylsilane (TMS) can be included by -cyclodextrin (-CD), and sodium 2,2-dimethylsilapentane-5-sulphonate (DSS) can form inclusion complexes with - and -CD. The NMR chemical shifts are changed considerably as a result of the strong interaction between CD and the guest compound in the inclusion complexes. A downfield shift of as much as 0.63 ppm shift downfield has been observed for the protons of external TMS in CD aqueous solution. In view of this, the question arises of whether TMS and DSS can be used as internal references. DSS in D₂O is suggested as an external reference for aqueous cyclodextrin solution in NMR measurements.     

Steroid polyols from the Far-Eastern starfish Henricia sanguinolenta

A new polyhydroxylated steroid (20R,24S)-5-cholestane-3,6,15,24-tetraol and a known glycoside, laeviuscoloside G, was isolated from the Far-Eastern starfish Henricia sanguinolenta, collected in the sea of Okhotsk, and characterized.
