Liquid-phase chlorination ofC-chlorovinylsilanes

Liquid-phase chlorination of a number of chloro(chlorovinyl)methylsilanes was investigated. A number of novelC-chlorosilanes were characterized by IR and¹H NMR spectra. Some regularities of these reactions were determined; correlations between the structure of chloro(chlorovinyl)methylsilanes and their reactivities were identified.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. On the bidirectional vortex and other similarity solutions in spherical coordinates

The bidirectional vortex refers to the bipolar, coaxial swirling motion that can be triggered, for example, in cyclone separators and some liquid rocket engines with tangential aft-end injectors. In this study, we present an exact solution to describe the corresponding bulk motion in spherical coordinates. To do so, we examine both linear and nonlinear solutions of the momentum and vorticity transport equations in spherical coordinates. The assumption will be that of steady, incompressible, inviscid, rotational, and axisymmetric flow. We further relate the vorticity to some power of the stream function. At the outset, three possible types of similarity solutions are shown to fulfill the momentum equation. While the first type is incapable of satisfying the conditions for the bidirectional vortex, it can be used to accommodate other physical settings such as Hill’s vortex. This case is illustrated in the context of inviscid flow over a sphere. The second leads to a closed-form analytical expression that satisfies the boundary conditions for the bidirectional vortex in a straight cylinder. The third type is more general and provides multiple solutions. The spherical bidirectional vortex is derived using separation of variables and the method of variation of parameters. The three-pronged analysis presented here increases our repertoire of general mean flow solutions that rarely appear in spherical geometry. It is hoped that these special forms will permit extending the current approach to other complex fluid motions that are easier to capture using spherical coordinates.     

The category of varieties and interpretations is alg-universal

A category is said to be alg-universal if every category of universal algebras can be fully embedded into it. We prove here that the category of varieties and interpretations, or in other words, the category of abstract clones and clone homomorphisms, is alg-universal.     

Completely empty pyramids on integer lattices and two-dimensional faces of multidimensional continued fractions

In this paper we develop an integer-affine classification of three-dimensional multistory, completely empty convex marked pyramids. We apply it to obtain the complete lists of compact two-dimensional faces of multidimensional continued fractions lying in planes at integer distances 2, 3, 4, …  to the origin. The faces are considered up to the action of the group of integer-linear transformations.     

Characterization of reduced iso‐α‐acids derived from hops (Humulus lupulus) by NMR

Reduced forms of iso‐α‐acids (isohumulones), used in modern beer brewing were separated and characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. Components from mixtures of rho‐iso‐α‐acids, tetrahydro‐iso‐α‐acids, and hexahydro‐iso‐α‐acids were isolated using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analyzed by use of one‐ and two‐dimensional NMR experiments. The data presented assign the identities of the main peaks in the HPLC traces for the reduced iso‐α‐acids. Previous tentative assignments regarding the cis and trans configurations and the structures of the acyl residues of the reduced iso‐α‐acids were confirmed and extensive NMR assignments were made. Furthermore, the previously unknown stereochemistry in the C‐4 side‐chain of the rho‐ and hexahydro‐iso‐α‐acids was assigned. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Metric marginal problems for set-valued or non-measurable variables

Summary In a separable metric space, if two Borel probability measures (laws) are nearby in a suitable metric, then there exist random variables with those laws which are nearby in probability. Specifically, by a well-known theorem of Strassen, the Prohorov distance between two laws is the infimum of Ky Fan distances of random variables with those laws. The present paper considers possible extensions of Strassen's theorem to two random elements one of which may be (compact) set-valued and/or non-measurable. There are positive results in finite-dimensional spaces, but with factors depending on the dimension. Examples show that such factors cannot entirely be avoided, so that the extension of Strassen's theorem to the present situation fails in infinite dimensions.This research was partially supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, by National Science Foundation grant DMS 8505550 at MSRI-Berkeley, and other NSF grants     

生物小分子与铜锌超氧化物歧化酶相互作用的波谱学研究及其应用

本工作以ESR和NMR为主要手段,并结合其它生化方法,考察了氨基酸、核酸碱基、糖等生命基本物质,和抗坏血酸等生命必需物质与钢锌超氧化物歧化酶的相互作用,实验观测到氨基酸、核酸碱基和抗坏血酸在水溶液中可以与酶中的Cu²⁺作用而使其脱离活性部位,以小分子络合物形式游离在溶液中,同时使酶失活,脱离活性部位的Cu²⁺的比例和酶的失活程度取决于小分子配体的加入量及其与Cu²⁺的络合能力。此外,首次尝试使用ESR方法,并借助氨基酸与酶的作用,考察了铜锌超氧化物歧化酶在盐酸胍变性和热变性过程中的构象变化行为,结果表明这一方法是直观而有效的。     

SOLUTIONS OF THE EQUATION x^m＋y^m=z^m IN SL2z

This paper solves an open problem of Vaserstein. The main result is: the equation x^m y^m=z^m has a solution in SL2z if and only if m is not divisible by 4 or 6 and m is not congruent to 3 modulo 6.
