The generalized state space of a commutative C*-algebra, denoted , is the set of positive unital maps from C(X) to the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space . C*-convexity is one of several non-commutative analogs of convexity which have been discussed in this context. In this paper
we show that a C*-extreme point of satisfies a certain spectral condition on the operators in the range of the associated positive operator-valued measure.
This result enables us to show that C*-extreme maps from C(X) into , the algebra generated by the compact and scalar operators, are multiplicative. This generalizes a result of D. Farenick
and P. Morenz. We then determine the structure of these maps.

The envelope of holomorphy of an arbitrary domain in a two-dimensional Stein manifold is identified with a connected component
of the set of equivalence classes of analytic discs immersed into the Stein manifold with boundary in the domain. This implies,
in particular, that for each of its points the envelope of holomorphy contains an embedded (non-singular) Riemann surface
(and also an immersed analytic disc) passing through this point with boundary contained in the natural embedding of the original
domain into its envelope of holomorphy. Moreover, it says, that analytic continuation to a neighbourhood of an arbitrary point
of the envelope of holomorphy can be performed by applying the Continuity Principle once. Another corollary concerns representation
of certain elements of the fundamental group of the domain by boundaries of analytic discs. A particular case is the following.
Given a contact three-manifold with Stein filling, any element of the fundamental group of the contact manifold whose representatives

We start by introducing a Čech homology with compact supports which we then use in order to construct an infinite-dimensional
homology theory. Next we show that under appropriate conditions on the nonlinearity there exists a ground state solution for
a semilinear Schr?dinger equation with strongly indefinite linear part. To this solution there corresponds a nontrivial critical
group, defined in terms of the infinite-dimensional homology mentioned above. Finally, we employ this fact in order to construct
solutions of multibump type. Although our main purpose is to survey certain homological methods in critical point theory,
we also include some new results.
