Functional zinc(II) phthalocyanines bearing Schiff base complexes as oxidation catalysts for bleaching systems

Oxidation catalysis is used to increase the performance of hydrogen peroxide in laundry bleach applications. Bleach catalysts provide cost‐effective, energy‐saving and environmentally friendly bleach systems yielding perfect stain removal at lower temperatures. This comparative study is based on the synthesis of bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)manganese(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 2 ), bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)cobalt(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 3 ) and bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)iron(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 4 ) as tri‐nuclear complexes consisting of two Schiff base complexes substituting a zinc phthalocyanine. Complexion on the periphery to obtain complexes 2 , 3 , 4 was performed through the reaction of a Schiff base‐substituted phthalocyanine using MnCl₂?4H₂O, CoCl₂?6H₂O or FeCl₃?6H₂O salts in basic condition in dimethylformamide. Fourier transform infrared, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, UV–visible, inductively coupled plasma optical emission and mass spectra were applied to characterize the prepared compounds. The bleach performances of the three phthalocyanine compounds 2 , 3 , 4 were examined by the degradation of morin as hydrophilic dye. The degradation progress in the presence of catalysts 2 , 3 , 4 /H₂O₂ combination in aqueous solution was investigated using an online spectrophotometric method. It was found that the catalysts 2 , 3 , 4 exhibited better bleaching performance at 25 °C than tetraactylethylethylenediamine as bleach activator used in powder detergent formulations for stain removal. Evidence of a Photo‐Radical Pathway Responsible of the Rearrangement of a Manganese(III)‐Schiff Base Complex in Solution

A new Mn^III‐Schiff base complex, [MnL(OH₂)](ClO₄) ( 1 ) (H₂L = N, N′‐bis‐(3‐Br‐5‐Cl‐salicylidene)‐1, 2‐diimino‐2‐methylethane), an inorganic model of the catalytic center (OEC, Oxygen Evolving Complex) in photosystem II (PSII), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and EPR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, magnetic susceptibility measurement and the study of its redox properties by cyclic and normal pulse voltammetry. This complex mimics reactivity (showing a relevant photolytic activity), and also some structural characteristics (parallel‐mode Mn^III EPR signal from partially assembled OEC cluster) of the natural OEC. The complex 1 was found to rearrange in solution into a crystallographically solved square‐pyramidal complex, [MnLL′] ( 2 ) (HL′ = 6‐bromo‐4‐chloro‐2‐cyanophenol), through a process, which probably liberates radical species (detected by EPR), and provokes a C—N bond cleavage in the ligand. A photo‐radical mechanism is discussed to explain this rearrangement.     

Conjugacy relationship between M-convex and L-convex functions in continuous variables

By extracting combinatorial structures in well-solved nonlinear combinatorial optimization problems, Murota (1996,1998) introduced the concepts of M-convexity and L-convexity to functions defined over the integer lattice. Recently, Murota–Shioura (2000, 2001) extended these concepts to polyhedral convex functions and quadratic functions in continuous variables. Towards a fully optimised organic LED device: Analysis of surface synthesis using coupling reactions by ToF-SIMS

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and polarisation-modulation reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (PM-RAIRS) have been used to monitor the surface synthesis of self-assembled aromatic π-conjugated molecular wires on gold substrates as a step towards a novel structure for organic electroluminescent devices (OLEDs). The wires have been synthesised using a series of Schiff's base coupling reactions in solution on a self-assembled monolayer of an aromatic thiolate anchor. ToF-SIMS and PM-RAIRS measurements have demonstrated that: (i) the anchor molecules self-assemble at the gold surface, (ii) the anchor molecules selectively react through imino coupling reactions with additional wire units with high efficiency and (iii) the wire-like structure is predominantly orientated normal to the surface.     

Synthesis and characterization of a novel nano-scale magnetic solid base catalyst involving a layered double hydroxide supported on a ferrite core

A nano-scale magnetic solid base catalyst MgAl-OH-LDH/MgFe₂O₄ (where LDH denotes layered double hydroxide) composed of MgAl-OH-LDH Brønsted base catalytic layers coated on MgFe₂O₄ spinel cores has been prepared. A magnetic precursor MgAl-CO₃-LDH/MgFe₂O₄ was prepared by a method involving separate nucleation and aging steps, and subsequently calcined to give a mixed metal oxide composite MgAl(O)/MgFe₂O₄ which was rehydrated to give MgAl-OH-LDH/MgFe₂O₄. The structure and magnetic properties of the nano-scale magnetic solid base MgAl-OH-LDH/MgFe₂O₄, together with those of the magnetic precursor MgAl-CO₃-LDH/MgFe₂O₄ and MgFe₂O₄ were characterized by XRD, XPS, low temperature N₂ adsorption and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The MgAl-OH-LDH/MgFe₂O₄ composite possesses a mesoporous structure with pore size ranging from 2 to 20 nm with particle size mainly in the range 35-130 nm. The catalytic properties of MgAl-OH-LDH/MgFe₂O₄ were evaluated using the self-condensation of acetone at 273 K as a probe reaction. The results showed that the conversion of acetone to diacetone alcohol reached the thermodynamic equilibrium value of 23% at 273 K. The catalyst was easily recovered through application of an external magnetic field, and when the reclaimed catalyst was used in a second run for the same reaction, the reactivity remained unchanged.     

NMR studies on a palladium(II) complex containing an incompletely coordinated facultative pentadentate Schiff base ligand

Palladium(II) dichloride reacts with 1,10‐bis(2‐pyrrolyl)‐2,5,9‐triaza‐1,9‐decadiene to give a [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]Cl complex in which the ligand is four‐coordinated, leaving one pyrrole group dangling. By using COSY, gHSQC, gHMBC connectivities and NOE experiments it has been concluded that one linkage isomer exists in DMSO solution, in spite of the fact that different sets of N atoms of potentially pentadentate ligand might be involved in coordination, and that the three chelate rings in the complex cation are arranged in a sequence: five‐membered, six‐membered, five‐membered which is different from that (5–5–6) found by x‐ray studies on the related [Ni(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]Cl compound. NMR studies allowed an unambiguous assignment of all ¹H and ¹³C NMR resonances for the complex. Results of x‐ray structural analysis of [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)](CH₃COO)H₂O supported the five‐membered, six‐membered, five‐membered ring sequence in the [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]⁺ complex cation and show an E (trans) orientation of the dangling pyrrole group with respect to the metal center. The intramolecular hydrogen bond in ortho-hydroxy acetophenones

The crystal structures of two ortho-hydroxy ketones (5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (I K) and 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (II K)) have been determined with X-ray diffraction at 100 K. A comparison of steric effects on properties of pseudoaromatic hydrogen bonds in ortho-hydroxy acetophenone and ortho-hydroxy ketimines have been carried out with the application of crystallographic data.

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra have been measured and interpreted.
