Open-ended problems have been regarded as powerful tools for teaching mathematics. This study examined the problem solving of eight mathematics/science middle-school teachers. A semi-structured interview was conducted with (PTs) after completing an open-ended triangle task with four unique solutions. Of particular emphasis was how the PTs used a specific heuristic strategy. The results showed that the primary strategy PTs employed in attempting to solve the triangle problem task was guess and check; however, from the PTs’ reflections, we found there existed misapplications of guess and check as a systematic problem-solving strategy. In order to prepare prospective teachers to effectively teach, teacher educators should pay more attention to the mathematical proficiency of PTs, particularly their abilities to systematically and efficiently use guess and check while solving problems and explain their solutions and reasoning to middle-school students.  相似文献

Experimental results on the observation of the modulation of Mössbauer radiation by pulsed laser radiation are presented. The time domain spectra agree well with the model of the frequency modulation of the Mössbauer radiation during the passage of the radiation through a vibrating resonance medium. Despite that the heterogeneous distribution of wealth is widely observed in social, economical and biological system, few studies have been conducted to explore its influence on the evolutionary dynamics in populations. This paper discusses this problem by introducing a heterogeneous wealth allocation mechanism controlled by a tunable parameterα . Our study shows that there is a positive relationship between the level of cooperation and the extent of heterogeneity of wealth distribution. More importantly, we show that the catalytic effect of extortioners can be significantly strengthened if wealth is heterogeneously distributed among the whole population. Cooperators and extortioners can co-exist if the value of αis moderate. We explain this phenomenon by arguing that this heterogeneous allocation mechanism enables three types of strategists to form clusters around several rich cooperating neighbors initially. Clusters of defectors tend to be eliminated at early stages of evolution.  相似文献

In this paper, we study model reduction for multiscale problems in heterogeneous high-contrast media. Our objective is to combine local model reduction techniques that are based on recently introduced spectral multiscale finite element methods (see [19]) with global model reduction methods such as balanced truncation approaches implemented on a coarse grid. Local multiscale methods considered in this paper use special eigenvalue problems in a local domain to systematically identify important features of the solution. In particular, our local approaches are capable of homogenizing localized features and representing them with one basis function per coarse node that are used in constructing a weight function for the local eigenvalue problem. Global model reduction based on balanced truncation methods is used to identify important global coarse-scale modes. This provides a substantial CPU savings as Lyapunov equations are solved for the coarse system. Typical local multiscale methods are designed to find an approximation of the solution for any given coarse-level inputs. In many practical applications, a goal is to find a reduced basis when the input space belongs to a smaller dimensional subspace of coarse-level inputs. The proposed approaches provide efficient model reduction tools in this direction. Our numerical results show that, only with a careful choice of the number of degrees of freedom for local multiscale spaces and global modes, one can achieve a balanced and optimal result.  相似文献

As chiral molecules, naturally occurring d -oligonucleotides have enantiomers, l -DNA and l -RNA, which are comprised of l -(deoxy)ribose sugars. These mirror-image oligonucleotides have the same physical and chemical properties as that of their native d -counterparts, yet are highly orthogonal to the stereospecific environment of biology. Consequently, l -oligonucleotides are resistant to nuclease degradation and many of the off-target interactions that plague traditional d -oligonucleotide-based technologies; thus making them ideal for biomedical applications. Despite a flurry of interest during the early 1990s, the inability of d - and l -oligonucleotides to form contiguous Watson–Crick base pairs with each other has ultimately led to the perception that l -oligonucleotides have only limited utility. Recently, however, scientists have begun to uncover novel strategies to harness the bio-orthogonality of l -oligonucleotides, while overcoming (and even exploiting) their inability to Watson–Crick base pair with the natural polymer. Herein, a brief history of l -oligonucleotide research is presented and emerging l -oligonucleotide-based technologies, as well as their applications in research and therapy, are presented.  相似文献

In this paper we establish the characterization of the weighted BMO via two weight commutators in the settings of the Neumann Laplacian ΔN+ on the upper half space R+n and the reflection Neumann Laplacian ΔN on Rn with respect to the weights associated to ΔN+ and ΔN respectively. This in turn yields a weak factorization for the corresponding weighted Hardy spaces, where in particular, the weighted class associated to ΔN is strictly larger than the Muckenhoupt weighted class and contains non-doubling weights. In our study, we also make contributions to the classical Muckenhoupt–Wheeden weighted Hardy space (BMO space respectively) by showing that it can be characterized via the area function (Carleson measure respectively) involving the semigroup generated by the Laplacian on Rn and that the duality of these weighted Hardy and BMO spaces holds for Muckenhoupt Ap weights with p(1,2] while the previously known related results cover only p(1,n+1n]. We also point out that this two weight commutator theorem might not be true in the setting of general operators L, and in particular we show that it is not true when L is the Dirichlet Laplacian ΔD+ on R+n.  相似文献
