Wave turbulence and intermittency in directional wave fields

The evolution of surface gravity waves is driven by nonlinear interactions that trigger an energy cascade similarly to the one observed in hydrodynamic turbulence. This process, known as wave turbulence, has been found to display anomalous scaling with deviation from classical turbulent predictions due to the emergence of coherent and intermittent structures on the water surface. In the ocean, waves are spread over a wide range of directions, with a consequent attenuation of the nonlinear properties. A laboratory experiment in a large wave facility is presented to discuss the sensitivity of wave turbulence on the directional properties of model wave spectra. Results show that the occurrence of coherent and intermittent structures become less likely with the broadening of the wave directional spreading. There is no evidence, however, that intermittency completely vanishes.     

Additive Hermitian idempotent preservers between operator algebras

Let L be an additive map between (real or complex) matrix algebras sending $n\times n$ Hermitian idempotent matrices to $m\times m$ Hermitian idempotent matrices. We show that there are nonnegative integers $p,q$ with $n(p+q)=r\le m$ and an $m\times m$ unitary matrix U such that$L(A)=U[(I_p?A)\oplus (I_q?A^t)\oplus 0_{m?r}]U^{?},\text{for any}n\times n\text{Hermitian}A\text{with rational trace}.$ We also extend this result to the (complex) von Neumann algebra setting, and provide a supplement to the Dye-Bunce-Wright Theorem asserting that every additive map of Hermitian idempotents extends to a Jordan ?-homomorphism.     

Evaluation of singular integrals for anisotropic elastic boundary element analysis

To improve the numerical evaluation of weakly singular integrals appearing in the boundary element method, a logarithmic Gaussian quadrature formula is usually suggested in the literature. In this formula the singular function is expressed in terms of the distance between source point and field point, which is a real variable. When an anisotropic elastic solid is considered, most of the existing fundamental solutions are written in terms of complex variables. When the problems with holes, cracks, inclusions, or interfaces are considered, to suit for the shape of the boundaries usually a mapping function is introduced and then the solutions are expressed in terms of mapped complex variables. To deal with the trouble induced by the complex variables, in this study through proper change of variables we develop a simple way to improve the evaluation of weakly singular integrals, especially for the problems of anisotropic elastic solids containing holes, cracks, inclusions, or interfaces. By simple matrix expansion, the proposed method is extended to the problems with piezoelectric or magneto-electro-elastic solids. By using the dual reciprocity method, the proposed method employed for the elastostatic fundamental solution can also be applied to the elastodynamic analysis.     

Twice Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs of diameter 4

It is known that a distance-regular graph with valency k at least three admits at most two Qpolynomial structures. We show that all distance-regular graphs with diameter four and valency at least three admitting two Q-polynomial structures are either dual bipartite or almost dual bipartite. By the work of Dickie(1995) this implies that any distance-regular graph with diameter d at least four and valency at least three admitting two Q-polynomial structures is, provided it is not a Hadamard graph, either the cube H(d, 2)with d even, the half cube 1/2H(2d + 1, 2), the folded cube?H(2d + 1, 2), or the dual polar graph on [2A2d-1(q)]with q 2 a prime power.     

INTERSECTION OF PRIME SUBMODULES AND DIMENSION OF MODULES

The aim of this paper is to study the conditions by which a P-prime submodule can be expressed as a finite intersection or union of P-prime submodules. Also corresponding to dimension and rank of modules, some equivalent conditions for a ring to be a Dedekind domain are given.     

The Iyengar Type Inequalities with Exact Estimations and the Chebyshev Central Algorithms of Integrals

In this paper, both low order and high order extensions of the Iyengar type inequality are obtained. Such extensions are the best possible in the same sense as that of the Iyengar inequality. hzrthermore, the Chebyshev central algorithms of integrals for some function classes and some related problems are also considered and investigated.
