Numerical methods for finding multiple eigenvalues of matrices depending on parameters

Summary. Let be a square matrix dependent on parameters and , of which we choose as the eigenvalue parameter. Many computational problems are equivalent to finding a point such that has a multiple eigenvalue at . An incomplete decomposition of a matrix dependent on several parameters is proposed. Based on the developed theory two new algorithms are presented for computing multiple eigenvalues of with geometric multiplicity . A third algorithm is designed for the computation of multiple eigenvalues with geometric multiplicity but which also appears to have local quadratic convergence to semi-simple eigenvalues. Convergence analyses of these methods are given. Several numerical examples are presented which illustrate the behaviour and applications of our methods. Optimization of the surface texture for silicon carbide sliding in water

Surface texturing has been recognized as an effective means to improve the tribological performances of sliding surfaces. Usually, generation additional hydrodynamic pressure to increase the load carrying capacity is regarded as the most significant effect of surface texture. In the case of silicon carbide sliding against identical material in water, the experimental results indicate that surface texture is also helpful to improve the running-in progress to smooth the contact surfaces, showing another reason to result in low friction. Based on the consideration of enhancing the generation of hydrodynamic pressure and improving running-in progress, a surface texture pattern, which was combined with large (circle, 350 μm in diameter) and small (rectangular, 40 μm in length) dimples, was designed to maximize the texture effect on the load carrying capacity of SiC surfaces sliding in water. The friction coefficient of such textured surface was evaluated and compared with that of untextured and those only with large or small dimples only. The friction reduction mechanisms of the patterns with different dimples in size are discussed.

On scheduling around large restrictive common due windows

This paper deals with the problem of scheduling a number of jobs on a single machine around a large, restrictive common due window. We consider individual earliness and tardiness penalties for the jobs. The objective is to find an optimal schedule which jointly minimizes the sum of the earliness and tardiness penalties. This problem is intractable and hence no efficient procedure for solving large instances is expected to be found. For this reason we first introduced a mapping of the problem which takes advantage of the structural properties inherent to optimal solutions. Secondly we solved the problem under study by using this mapping and applying three meta-heuristics, namely evolutionary strategy, simulated annealing and threshold accepting. To validate the quality of these approaches, altogether 250 benchmark problems with different window sizes and positions of up to 200 jobs are examined. Furthermore small instances are solved to optimality by a mixed integer programming formulation.     

Mountain pass solutions for the coupled systems of second and fourth order elliptic equations

In this paper, by the mountain pass theorem, we give an existence theorem of nontrivial solutions for a coupled system of second and fourth order elliptic equations.     

Multiple doubly periodic solutions of semi-linear damped beam equations

The purpose of this work is to investigate the weakened Ambrosetti–Prodi type multiplicity results for weak doubly periodic solutions of damped beam equations. By using the topological degree theory, the author obtains a result which is similar to the result for damped wave equations in the literature.     

Effects of Evanescent Space-Harmonics on the Transmission Characteristics of a Gaussian Beam by Cylindrical Wire Grids

When electromagnetic waves propagate through a wire grid, there will be some evanescent space harmonics generated around the wire grid. In this paper, we mainly investigate their effects on the transmission characteristics of a Gaussian beam by cylindrical wire grids. The results are compared with those without taking account of evanescent space-harmonics.

在比较宽松的条件下，研究了Banach空间中二阶脉冲积分微分方程在正半实轴上具有无穷个脉冲点的初值问题的解的存在性。利用递归法、Tonelii序列和局部凸拓扑，建立了新的存在性定理，对郭大钧的结果做了本质改进。
