Arbitrarily small weak solutions for a nonlinear eigenvalue problem in Orlicz–Sobolev spaces

Under an appropriate oscillating behavior of the nonlinear term, the existence of a determined open interval of positive parameters for which an eigenvalue non-homogeneous Neumann problem admits infinitely many weak solutions that strongly converges to zero, in an appropriate Orlicz–Sobolev space, is proved. Our approach is based on variational methods. The abstract result of this paper is illustrated by a concrete case.     

Inequality problems of quasi-hemivariational type involving set-valued operators and a nonlinear term

The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of at least one solution for a general inequality of quasi-hemivariational type, whose solution is sought in a subset K of a real Banach space E. First, we prove the existence of solutions in the case of compact convex subsets and the case of bounded closed and convex subsets. Finally, the case when K is the whole space is analyzed and necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions are stated. Our proofs rely essentially on the Schauder’s fixed point theorem and a version of the KKM principle due to Ky Fan (Math Ann 266:519–537, 1984).     

Nonlinear elliptic problems with superlinear reaction and parametric concave boundary condition

We study parametric nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems driven by the p-Laplacian with convex and concave terms. The convex term appears in the reaction and the concave in the boundary condition (source). We study the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions as the parameter λ > 0 varies. For the semilinear problem (p = 2), we prove a bifurcation type result. Finally, we show the existence of nodal (sign changing) solutions.

Multi-valued boundary value problems involving Leray-Lions operators and discontinuous nonlinearities

We prove an existence result for a class of Dirichlet boundary value problems with discontinuous nonlinearity and involving a Leray-Lions operator. The proof combines monotonicity methods for elliptic problems, variational inequality techniques and basic tools related to monotone operators. Our work generalizes a result obtained in Carl [4].     

Analytical performance of an r.f. capacitively coupled plasma for atomic emission with tip-ring electrode geometry

A low to medium power radiofrequency capacitively coupled plasma is characterized as spectral source for atomic emission. The signal to background ratio and the limits of detection were determined for 19 elements as a function of the plasma torch geometry and the observation point.     

Continuous spectrum for a class of nonhomogeneous differential operators

We study the boundary value problem in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, where Ω is a bounded domain in with smooth boundary, λ is a positive real number, and the continuous functions p ₁, p ₂, and q satisfy 1 < p ₂(x) < q(x) < p ₁(x) < N and for any . The main result of this paper establishes the existence of two positive constants λ₀ and λ₁ with λ₀ ≤ λ₁ such that any is an eigenvalue, while any is not an eigenvalue of the above problem.     

Eigenvalue problems in anisotropic Orlicz–Sobolev spaces
