Observation and analysis ofE mesons in\bar p p annihilation at rest in H2 gas

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest in a gaseous H₂ target at NTP into the final state π⁺ π^? K ^± π^? (K ⁰) with an undetectedK ⁰ or \(\bar K^0 \) has been investigated. We observe theE(1420) resonance in the invariant mass spectrum (K ⁰)_miss K ^± π^? with massM _E =1413±8 MeV/c² and widthГ ^E =62 ± 16MeV/c² and find evidence for the production of thef ₁(1285). The absolute branching ratio of \(\bar p\) p → π⁺ π^? E ⁰,E ⁰ →K ₀ ^L K ^± π ^? at (61±6)%P wave annihilation is (3.0±0.9)·10^?4 of all annihilations. The observed suppression of theE production fromP wave with respect to theS wave together with some simple selection rules suggest that the quantum numbers of theE(1420) areJ ^pc=0^?+ and not I⁺⁺.     

The origin of electrochemical activity in Li2MnO3

The electrochemical activity of Li2MnO3 in non-aqueous media has been investigated and found to involve neither Mn(4+)-Mn5+ oxidation nor simultaneous O2- removal but exchange of Li+ by H+, the latter being generated in the electrolyte.     

Ammonia chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry in structural determination of alkaloids. II. Tetraponerines from pseudomyrmecine ants

Chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (CI-MS/MS) of alkaloids with ammonia reagent gas and collision-activated dissociation as well as EI-MS/MS were applied to the tetraponerine alkaloids in extracts from six pseudomyrmecine ants of the genus Tetraponera. The MS/MS techniques along with gas chromatography Fourier transform infrared (GC/FTIR) spectra allowed identification in two extracts of seven of the eight known tetraponerines. The EI-MS/MS fragmentations proved diagnostic for the ring system and the CI-MS/MS patterns for the C-8 or C-9 substitution, while the Bohlmann bands in FTIR spectra were diagnostic for the C-8 or C-9 configurations. An Indian ant (T. allaborans) had T-2, T-4 and T-8, while a Chinese ant (T. binghami) had T-5, T-6, T-7 and T-8. Four other ants, T. rufonigra (India), T. penzigi (Africa), T. clypeata (Africa) and T. sp. cf. emeryi (Africa), had no tetraponerines.

The action of ultra violet rays of 260 nm on aqueous solutions of bases, nucleosides and nucleotides of DNA at 77°K is studied by electron spin resonance. It is shown that the free radicals observed are similar, with a few noteworthy exceptions to those induced by X-rays, under the same conditions of temperature, in the solid state. Contrary to what might be excepted on the basis of the results obtained by X-rays, the variation in the yield in paramagnetic centres in each sequence studied does not seem to be important.     

Carbon nanohorns grown from ruthenium nanoparticles

A nanoscale ruthenium/gold bimetallic cluster of clusters has been used as a molecular precursor to produce pure ruthenium nanoparticles (seeds) as catalysts for the growth of carbon nanohorns (CNHs).     

Nucleophilic Addition of CH, NH, and OH Bonds to the Phosphadiazonium Cation and Interpretation of (31)P Chemical Shifts at Dicoordinate Phosphorus Centers

The phosphadiazonium cation [MesNP](+) reacts quantitatively with the fluorenylide anion, MesNH(2), and MesOH (Mes = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl), resulting in formal insertion of the N-P moiety into the H-Y (Y = C, N, O) bonds. Specifically, reaction of MesNPCl with fluorenyllithium gives the aminofluorenylidenephosphine [crystal data: C(31)H(38)NP, monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 9.568(8) ?, b = 24.25(2) ?, c = 11.77(1) ?, beta = 101.38(8) degrees, Z = 4]. Similarly, reaction of [MesNP][GaCl(4)] with MesNH(2) gives the diaminophosphenium salt [MesN(H)PN(H)Mes][GaCl(4)] [crystal data: C(36)H(60)Cl(4)GaN(2)P, monoclinic, C2/c, a = 24.921(2) ?, b = 10.198(4) ?, c = 16.445(2) ?, beta = 93.32(1) degrees, Z = 4], and reaction with MesOH gives the first example of an aminooxyphosphenium salt [MesN(H)POMes][GaCl(4)]. It is proposed that the reactions involve nucleophilic attack at phosphorus followed by a 1,3-hydrogen migration from Y to N. Experimental evidence for the formation of sigma-complex intermediates is provided by the isolation of [MesNP-PPh(3)][SO(3)CF(3)] [crystal data: C(37)H(44)F(3)NO(3)P(2)S, triclinic, P&onemacr;, a = 10.663(1) ?, b = 19.439(1) ?, c = 10.502(1) ?, alpha = 103.100(7) degrees, beta = 113.311(7) degrees, gamma = 93.401(7) degrees, Z = 2]. As part of the unequivocal characterization of the aminooxyphosphenium salt, detailed solid-state (31)P NMR studies and GIAO calculations on the phosphenium cations have been performed. Contrary to popular belief, the phosphorus shielding in dicoordinate cations is not caused by the positive charge but results from efficient mixing between the phosphorus lone pair and pi orbitals.     

ETUDE PAR RESONANCE PARAMAGNETIQUE ELECTRONIQUE DE LA PHOTOSENSIBILISATION DES ACIDES AMINES PAR LA PROFLAVINE

Abstract— –The photosensitization of amino acids by proflavine is studied using the technique of electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The analysis of the line shape as a function of the incident microwave power (both in the presence and absence of oxygen) and the dependence of the numbers of free radicals on the intensity of the incident light allow one to suggest that two types of radicals are formed. One is formed by a biphotonic process, the nature of the radicals being the same as in the case of ionising radiation, while the other is probably the RO₂ radical formed as a result of photodynamic action.
