Hydrothermal growth and optical properties of doughnut-shaped ZnO microparticles

Doughnut-shaped ZnO microparticles have been grown through a hydrothermal reaction in citrate solution at 120 degrees C. FESEM reveals that these microparticles consist of regular arranged nanoplates, and there is a concave on the surface of each microparticle. The existence of citrate is vital to the formation of the complex microparticles. Room temperature photoluminescence measurements show strong UV band emission. The yellow and green emissions related to the structure defects can be barely observed, indicating the high crystalline perfection of these microparticles.     

Diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:GdVO<Subscript>4</Subscript> laser with a GaAs saturable absorber mirror

We report on a diode end-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:GdVO₄ laser. By using a GaAs wafer simultaneously as the saturable absorber and the output coupler, stable continuous-wave mode locking was achieved. The pulse width was measured to be 18.9 picoseconds at a repetition rate of 370 MHz. The most remarkable property of the laser is that its repetition rate can be changed from 370 MHz to 3.348 GHz by simply changing the cavity length. An average output power of 3.46 W at a 3.348 GHz repetition rate was obtained with a 14 W pump power. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a passively mode-locked Nd:GdVO₄ laser using a GaAs wafer as the saturable absorber. PACS 42.55.Rz; 42.60.Fc; 42.55.Xi.     

From arm-shaped layers to a new type of polythreaded array: a two fold interpenetrated three-dimensional network with a rutile topology

The self-assembly based on 2D motifs with side arms leads to the formation of a new type of polythreaded network which exhibits a 2-fold interpenetrated 3D array if H-bonds are taken into account.

A photoluminescent three-dimensional coordination polymer containing two types of cavities is prepared by the covalent linkage of 2D bilayer motif with linear connecting ligand.     

An improved palladium-based DMFCs cathode catalyst

A novel carbon-supported palladium-rich Pd3Pt1/C catalyst prepared by a modified polyol process showed a better cell performance than Pt/C in direct methanol fuel cells, which may be attributed to palladium's inactivity to methanol electro-oxidation while exhibiting good performance to oxygen reduction reaction.     

String order in half-integer-spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains

We derive the extended string order parameter O(S) for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with half-integer spin S in the valence-bond-solid picture. We obtain the analytic power-law scaling of O(S) versus the chain length L and show that O(S) scales at an extremely slow pace that decreases rapidly with growing spin magnitude. Furthermore, accurate numerical calculations show that the power-law scaling sets in only when L exceeds a characteristic length scale l(S) which increases very fast with growing S. Consequently, a pseudo-long-range string order exists in half-integer-spin Heisenberg chains. The implications of this result and its relationship to other topological features such as the end-chain states are discussed.     

Novel synthesis of highly active Pt/C cathode electrocatalyst for direct methanol fuel cell

A 40 wt% Pt/C cathode electrocatalyst with controlled Pt particle size of approximately 2.9 nm showing better performance than commercial catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell was prepared by a polyol process with water but without using stabilizing agent.
