Attapulgite grafted with polystyrene via a simultaneous reverse and normal initiation atom transfer radical polymerization

The surface grafting of attapulgite (ATP) with polystyrene (PS) was established via a simultaneous reverse and normal initiation atom transfer radical polymerization (SR&NIATRP). 4‐(chloromethyl)phenyltrimethoxysilane (CMPTMS) chemical bounded on the surface of ATP (ATP‐Cl, Cl‐I) was prepared via one‐step self‐assembly. SR&NI ATRP of styrene was conducted using CuCl₂ complex tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine (Me₆‐TREN) as the catalytic system, initiated by 2,2‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) and ATP‐Cl. FT‐IR, XRD, XPS, TGA and TEM data were consistent with the grafting of benzyl chloride groups and PS chains on ATP surface. The controllability of polymerization was investigated by the kinetics behavior under different molar ratio of AIBN and CuCl₂. The obtained polymer possessed a uniform distribution of molecular weights with a lower polydispersity index of 1.2～1.4. The relationship between polymerization on the surface of ATP and in solution was discussed in detail based on TGA data of hybrid particles and GPC trace of free polymer in solution. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simulation of near-infrared photodiode detectors based on β-FeSi_2/4H-SiC heterojunctions

In this paper,we propose a near-infrared p-type β-FeSi2/n-type 4H-SiC heterojunction photodetector with semiconducting silicide(β-FeSi2) as the active region for the first time.The optoelectronic characteristics of the photodetector are simulated using a commercial simulator at room temperature.The results show that the photodetector has a good rectifying character and a good response to near-infrared light.Interface states should be minimized to obtain a lower reverse leakage current.The response spectrum of the β-FeSi2/4H-SiC detector,which consists of a p-type β-FeSi2 absorption layer with a doping concentration of 1×1015cm-3 and a thickness of 2.5 μm,has a peak of 755 mA/W at 1.42 μm.The illumination of the SiC side obtains a higher responsivity than that of the β-FeSi2 side.The results illustrate that the β-FeSi2/4H-SiC heterojunction can be used as a near-infrared photodetector compatible with near-infrared optically-activated SiC-based power switching devices.     

Synthesis of peptide dendrimers with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cores via click chemistry

Inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was used as the core for the synthesis of poly(Llysine) peptide dendrimer via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne click chemistry. The inorganic/organic composite dendrimer was characterized by MS, 1H NMR, FTIR, GPC and DLS.     

Low Temperature Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration by Atmospheric Air Non-thermal Plasma Injection System

An experimental study of the regeneration of diesel particulate filter (DPF) was conducted through the use of a self-designed Non-thermal plasma (NTP) injection system with an experimental temperature of 20–300 °C, with atmospheric air being used as the gas source. The results revealed that the PM could be broken down into CO and CO₂ by NTP, through a discharge reaction of the NTP reactor. As the temperature increases, the mass of C₁ (mass of C in CO) showed an overall declining trend. Interestingly, the mass of C₂ (mass of C in CO₂) and C₁₂ (the sum of C₁ and C₂) both showed an initial increase, followed by a decrease. The peak mass of C₁₂ appears at 150 °C, and both axial and radial temperature gradients are less than the limit of DPF temperature gradient at this temperature. In conclusion, DPF can be regenerated by the NTP technology at a lower temperature, which can aid in the avoidance of thermal damage of DPF. The technology boasts a great advantage in adopting atmospheric air as its gas source, which can not only reduce costs, but also is convenient.     

Influence of switchable magnetic field on the modulation property of nanostructured magnetic fluids

Magnetic fluid is a kind of colloidal material with tunable microstructure and unique optical properties. The tunable magneto-optical modulation property of magnetic fluid under externally switchable magnetic field with various modulation periods is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The transitional modulation period (lower limit of the working frequency) between the square-like and oscillation-like modulation is achieved and found to be magnetic-field- and sample-concentration-dependent. The modulation mechanism is analyzed and ascribed to the dynamic microstructure of magnetic fluid under different modulation periods of external magnetic fields. The result of this work may be helpful for the pragmatic applications of magnetic fluid based on the square-like modulation.     

Evaluation of in vitro antioxidant activities of soyasaponins from soy hypocotyls in human HepG2 cell line

Soyasaponins were shown to have a wide range of biological activities in previous studies; however, the activities of their monomeric compounds are unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activities of soyasaponins in HepG2 cells. Four soyasaponins were isolated from soy hypocotyls and identified as soyasaponin Aa, Ab, Ba, and Bb. The protective effects of these soyasaponins against production of hydrogen peroxide-induced reactive oxygen species in cells were investigated. The cellular antioxidant activity of soyasaponins was found to be in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations ranging between 25 and 400 μg/mL in 24 h. Finally, based on cell morphology observations, group A soyasaponins showed better cellular antioxidant activity and anti-oxidative enzyme activity than group B ones, with an optimal concentration of 100 μg/mL.     

Modeling,nonlinear dynamic analysis and control of fractional PMSG of wind turbine

This study aims to reveal the laws of the relationship between fractional-order system and integer-order system. Meanwhile, delayed feedback control is introduced to control the fractional-order PMSG (permanent magnet synchronous generator) model of a wind turbine. First, the fractional-order mathematical model of PMSG is established. Next, numerical simulations under different system orders are given and the system dynamic behaviors are analyzed in detail. Then, the delayed feedback control method is introduced to control the fractional-order PMSG and the control results when different parameters vary are analyzed. Complex dynamics are presented and some interesting phenomena are discovered. It is found that the system order influences the dynamics of the system in many aspects such as chaos pattern, bifurcation behavior, period window, shape and size of strange attractor. The delayed time, feedback gain, feedback limitation, system order can obviously influence the control result except the initial state of the system. Moreover, the feedback limitation has a minimum to successfully control the system to stable states and the system order also has a maximum to do so.
