Removal of Rhodamine-B from Aqueous Solution by Adsorption onto Crosslinked Alginate Beads

The biosorption of rhodamine-B from aqueous solution using crosslinked alginate beads was studied by contact method at fixed pH ?3 and room temperature (28 ± 0.2°C). Both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models could describe the adsorption equilibrium of the rhodamine-B onto crosslinked alginate beads. The influence of various experimental parameters such as pH, temperature, effect of concentration and time were evaluated. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of rhodamine-B onto alginate beads decreased with increase in pH and temperature above room temperature.     

A new phenanthroindolizidine alkaloid from Tylophora indica

A new phenanthroindolizidine alkaloid, 3-O-demethyl tylophorinidine (VI), was isolated from the aerial (leaves and stem) parts of Tylophora indica and characterized using different spectral techniques. Gel chromatography and reverse phase preparative HPLC were used for sample purification. The new alkaloid, VI, was screened for anticancer activity against a panel of different cancer cell lines and it showed significant anticancer activity with IC₅₀ value in the range of 0.89?C1.40 ??M.     

Giant magneto resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance in Sm0.55Sr0.30Ag0.15MnO3 perovskite

Silver ions substituted samarium strontium manganite (Sm0.55Sr0.30Ag0.15MnO3) pervoskite was synthesized by using respective oxides in stoichiometric ratio through solid state reaction. The as-prepared sample was characterized by various analytical techniques to confirm its formation and understand the effect of monovalent silver ions in pervoskite lattice. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the single phase formation while grain morphology in SEM image indicates good connectivity among the grains. The enhancement in metal to insulator transition temperature shows quenched disorder and magnetoresistance phenomena. The magnetoresistance (MR) and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) emerge from grain growth factor and homogeneity induced by Ag+ ions in the lattice. The reduction in hysteresis loss resulted from antiferromagnetic - ferromagnetic (TN) and ferromagnetic - paramagnetic (Tc) transitions reveals the removal of disorder in perovskite lattice by Ag+ ions substitution. This increases the magnetic moment across distinct ions on the applying magnetic field. The rise in MR% (~99%) with silver doping emerging from smooth spin tunneling of the grains across the boundary and suppression of the disordered magnetic fluctuations with increase in magnetic field has been reported. The present compound exhibits the first order nature of magnetism and observed first time the highest value of TCR ~ 95%.     

Studies on the cure parameters of cyanate ester–epoxy blend system through rheological property measurements

Thermosetting blend system of co-cured cyanate ester with epoxy resin is receiving importance for high technological applications because of its wide range of thermo-mechanical, rheological, and electrical properties. However, processing of these system warrant proper knowledge of the rheological behavior of the blend during the curing process. This article discusses the rheological behavior of the blend systems with respect to the pot life, gel time, gelation temperature and also evaluated fitting parameters for the prediction of gelation time and viscosity during the entire curing process from the isothermal rheological measurements.     

Direct observation of large electronic domains with memory effect in doped manganites

We use a spatially resolved, direct spectroscopic probe for electronic structure with an additional sensitivity to chemical compositions to investigate high-quality single crystal samples of La(1/4)Pr(3/8)Ca(3/8)MnO3, establishing the formation of distinct insulating domains embedded in the metallic host at low temperatures. These domains are found to be at least an order of magnitude larger in size compared to previous estimates and exhibit memory effects on temperature cycling in the absence of any perceptible chemical inhomogeneity, suggesting long-range strains as the probable origin.

In this paper explicit expressions ofm + 1 idempotents in the ring are given. Cyclic codes of length 2 ^m over the finite fieldF _q, of odd characteristic, are defined in terms of their generator polynomials. The exact minimum distance and the dimension of the codes are obtained.     

A simple route to the syntheses of both enantiomers of trans-oak lactone and (+)-cis-oak lactone

Stereocontrolled syntheses of both enantiomers of trans-oak lactone and (+)-cis-oak lactone have been achieved from a common precursor.     

Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of some organic sulfides by morpholinium chlorochromate

The oxidation of organic sulfides by morpholinium chlorochromate (MCC) resulted in the formation of the corresponding sulfoxides. The reaction is first order with respect to both MCC and the sulfide. The reaction is catalyzed by toluene‐p‐sulfonic acid (TsOH). The oxidation was studied in 19 different organic solvents. An analysis of the solvent effect by Swain's equation showed that both the cation‐ and anion‐solvating powers of the solvents play important roles. The correlation analyses of the rate of oxidation of 34 sulfides were performed in terms of various single and multiparametric equations. For the aryl methyl sulfides, the best correlation is obtained with Charton's localized‐delocalized‐resonance and localized‐delocalized‐resonance‐steric equations. The oxidation of alkyl phenyl sulfides exhibited a very good correlation in terms of the Pavelich–Taft equation. The polar reaction constants are negative, indicating an electron‐deficient sulfur center in the rate‐determining step. A mechanism involving formation of a sulfonium cation intermediate in the slow step has been proposed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 41: 65–72, 2009     

Allosteric effect of the first lead ion on stepwise extraction of the second lead ion with p-t-butylcalix[5]arene pentacarboxylic acid derivative

A calix[5]arene-based solvent extraction reagent displaying very high selectivity for lead has been prepared, one molecule of which extracts two lead ions in a stepwise manner. The first Pb²⁺ ion is bound to five phenoxy oxygen atoms inside the calixarene cavity due to which the ligand undergoes conformational freezing in stable cone conformer. This causes positive allosteric effect for co-extraction of the second lead ion due to the aggregation of functional groups.
