This article discusses the design of computational experiments to test heuristic methods and provides reporting guidelines for such experimentation. We report a simple interference method to determine the dispersion of the extraordinary refractive index and birefringence of highly conjugated and coloured nematic liquid crystals used as light-emitting materials in organic electroluminescent devices. The measurements are made in the nematic glass phase at room temperature. The birefringence is highly dispersive and values up to 1.1 are obtained. Chiral groups are incorporated into the end chains giving a chiral nematic liquid crystal with a very wide stopband in the visible region. The Berreman matrix method is used to simulate transmission through the chiral nematic liquid crystal cell using the refractive index parameters obtained experimentally. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is found.  相似文献

This is a report of the adaptation of microwave processing in the preparation of liver biopsies for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to examine ultrastructural damage of mitochondria in the setting of metabolic stress. Hemorrhagic shock was induced in pigs via 35% total blood volume bleed and a 90-min period of shock followed by resuscitation. Hepatic biopsies were collected before shock and after resuscitation. Following collection, biopsies were processed for TEM by a rapid method involving microwave irradiation (Giberson, 2001). Samples pre- and postshock of each of two animals were viewed and scored using the mitochondrial ultrastructure scoring system (Crouser et al., 2002), a system used to quantify the severity of ultrastructural damage during shock. Results showed evidence of increased ultrastructural damage in the postshock samples, which scored 4.00 and 3.42, versus their preshock controls, which scored 1.18 and 1.27. The results of this analysis were similar to those obtained in another model of shock (Crouser et al., 2002). However, the amount of time used to process the samples was significantly shortened with methods involving microwave irradiation.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of a red light-emitting and photopolymerizable smectic liquid crystal (reactive mesogen). We investigate the suitability of polymer networks formed from smectic reactive mesogens for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The use of mixtures of smectic reactive mesogens is shown to lower the processing temperature for the fabrication of OLEDs to room temperature. We also report efficient energy transfer from a nematic polymer network host to a smectic light-emitting dopant and polarized emission from a polymer network formed from an aligned smectic reactive mesogen.  相似文献

The visible luminescence caused by anodic oxidation of p-type porous silicon has been studied. It is shown that similar luminescence can be observed in n-type material by illumination with near-infrared light. Addition of a suitable reducing agent to the electrolyte solution can both suppress the oxidation of the porous layer and quench its luminescence. These results confirm a previously suggested mechanism, in which the capture of a valence band hole in a surface bond of the porous semiconductor gives rise to a surface state intermediate capable of thermally injecting an electron into the conduction band.  相似文献

The mixed integer-linear models that have been used in most analyses of warehouse location problems fail to capture the potential operating efficiencies associated with large scale facilities. This paper presents an algorithm for finding a minimal cost warehouse system design wherein individual warehouses have limited capacities and exhibit economies of scale. The iterative procedure defines and solves a series of conventional transportation problems in order to converge on the optimal system design. The algorithm is well suited to solving large problems of the type commonly encountered in practice.  相似文献
