The overshoot effect can be reduced by temporary hearing loss induced by aspirin or exposure to intense sound. The present study simulated a hearing loss at 4.0 kHz via pure-tone forward masking and examined the effect of the simulation on threshold for a 10-ms, 4.0-kHz signal presented 1 ms after the onset of a 400-ms, broadband noise masker whose spectrum level was 20 dB SPL. Masker frequency was 3.6, 4.0, or 4.2 kHz, and masker level was 80 dB SPL. Subject-dependent delays were determined such that 10 or 20 dB of masking at 4.0 kHz was produced. In general, the pure-tone forward masker did not reduce the simultaneous-masked threshold, suggesting that elevating threshold with a pure-tone forward masker does not sufficiently simulate the effect of a temporary hearing loss on overshoot.  相似文献

We report a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (M?ller) scattering: A(PV)=[-175+/-30(stat)+/-20(syst)] x 10(-9). This first direct observation of parity nonconservation in M?ller scattering leads to a measurement of the electron's weak charge at low energy Q(e)(W)=-0.053+/-0.011. This is consistent with the standard model expectation at the current level of precision: sin((2)theta(W)(M(Z))((-)MS)=0.2293+/-0.0024(stat)+/-0.0016(syst)+/-0.0006(theory).  相似文献

This work employs UV-visible extinction spectroscopy as a new spectral mapping technique to characterize self-assembled polystyrene microsphere samples produced by convective self-assembly (CSA). This spectroscopic technique was successfully used to analyze the periodic particle arrays produced by the polystyrene template, yielding a detailed characterization of each sample. The CSA-prepared samples proved to be more uniform across a sample as well as more reproducible than previous sample preparation techniques. For the first time, a detailed characterization and quantitative evaluation of the entire sample has been performed by spectroscopic mapping.  相似文献

We report new precise H(e,e(')p)pi(0) measurements at the Delta(1232) resonance at Q(2)=0.127 (GeV/c)(2) obtained at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility which are particularly sensitive to the transverse electric amplitude (E2) of the gamma(*)N-->Delta transition. The new data have been analyzed together with those of earlier measurements to yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios: Re(E(3/2)(1+)/M(3/2)(1+))=(-2.3+/-0.3(stat+syst)+/-0.6(model))% and Re(S(3/2)(1+)/M(3/2)(1+))=(-6.1+/-0.2(stat+syst)+/-0.5(model))% for M(3/2)(1+)=(41.4+/-0.3(stat+syst)+/-0.4(model))(10(-3)/m(pi(+))). The derived amplitudes give credence to the conjecture of deformation in hadrons favoring, at low Q2, the dominance of mesonic effects.  相似文献

Photoproduction of a phi meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to Egamma = 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at t = -|t|min do not increase smoothly as Egamma increases but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. The angular distributions demonstrate that phi mesons are photoproduced predominantly by helicity-conserving processes, and the local maximum is not likely due to unnatural-parity processes.  相似文献

We report on a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (M?ller) scattering: A(PV) = [-131 +/- 14(stat) +/- 10(syst)] x 10(-9), leading to the determination of the weak mixing angle sin2(thetaW(eff) = 0.2397 +/- 0.0010(stat) +/- 0.0008(syst), evaluated at Q2 = 0.026 GeV2. Combining this result with the measurements of sin2(thetaW(eff) at the Z0 pole, the running of the weak mixing angle is observed with over 6sigma significance. The measurement sets constraints on new physics effects at the TeV scale.  相似文献

Shock compression of sapphire (Al2O3) and lithium fluoride (LiF) to pressures above 5 Mbar has been observed to transform these transparent, wide band-gap insulators into partially degenerate liquid semiconductors with optical reflectivities of several percent. Reflectivities rise steadily with shock pressure up to 45% in sapphire at 20 Mbar and 20% in LiF at 13 Mbar. Using a simple model, the electron scattering length was inferred to be approximately the interatomic distance. In addition, several equation-of-state points at these pressures were measured.  相似文献

Rotational side-bands in 162Dy have been studied using the 160Gd(α, 2nγ)162Dy reaction. Seven side-bands are observed, with Kπ = 2+, 2?, (0)?, 0+, 5?, 4+ and (6?). Four of these bands have collective structure at low spin: the Kπ = 2+γ-vibrational band, the Kπ = 0+β-vibrational band, and the Kπ = 2? and (0)? octupole vibrational bands. Of the remaining bands, the 4+ band is deformation coupled while the 5? and (6?) bands are rotation-aligned. Several bandcrossings are observed in this nucleus. The β and γ-bands are crossed at I = 6h?and 12h?, respectively, by a highly aligned (i132)2 S-band; extrapolation of this S-band to higher spin suggests that it crosses the g.s.b. between I = 18h?and 20h?. The 2? octupole band is crossed by the 5? band at I = 9h? and again by the (6?) band at I = 12h?. The latter bandcrossings are discussed in terms of two-quasiparticle plus rotor calculations.  相似文献
