Synthesis,characterization, and micellization of an epoxy‐based amphiphilic diblock copolymer of ϵ‐caprolactone and glycidyl methacrylate by enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization

Amphiphilic diblock copolymer polycaprolactone‐block‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PCL‐b‐PGMA) was synthesized via enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Methanol first initiated eROP of ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme‐435 under anhydrous conditions. The resulting monohydroxyl‐terminated polycaprolactone (PCL–OH) was subsequently converted to a bromine‐ended macroinitiator (PCL–Br) for ATRP by esterification with α‐bromopropionyl bromide. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). A kinetic analysis of ATRP indicated a living/controlled radical process. The macromolecular structures were characterized for PCL–OH, PCL–Br, and the block copolymers by means of nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses indicated that the copolymer composition (?‐CL/GMA) had a great influence on the thermal properties. The well‐defined, amphiphilic diblock copolymer PCL‐b‐PGMA self‐assembled into nanoscale micelles in aqueous solutions, as investigated by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photochemistry of dibenzo-1,4-dioxins: intramolecular rearrangement-reduction through observable 2,2′-biphenylquinones

The photochemistry of dibenzo-1,4-dioxin (7) and 2,3,7,8-tetramethyldibenzo-1,4-dioxin (15) — both of which have the parent ring system of the well-known enrimental contaminant dioxin— has been studied in aqueous solution and in selected organic solvents. It is shown that a novel intramolecular photorearrangement is the major mode of reaction for 7 and the exclusive reaction for 15, giving rise to observable (by UV—Vis spectrophotometry) intermediate 2,2′-biphenylquinones. Subsequent reduction by the organic co-solvent gives rise to 2,2′-biphenols as major or exclusive product. Thus, photolysis of these compounds generates oxidizing agents in the biphenylquinones. Photolysis in the presence of added N_aBH₄ resulted is greatly enhanced yields of biphenols along with more than 90% material balance. These findings have relevance to dioxin photodecomposition, which can be used as a method for its destruction.     

INFLUENCE OF POLYMER CHARACTERISTICS AND MELT-SPINNING CONDITIONS ON THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH RANDOMNESS 60PHB/PET THERMOTROPIC LIQUID CRYSTAL COPOLYESTER FIBER

Six samples of linear high randomness 60PHB/ PET thermotropic liquid crystal copolyesters are made by melt copolymerization at 290℃ , whose randomness about 0.955 is measured by the discernible 'H-NMR spectrometer. High tenacity, high module fiber is prepared by melt spinning in liquid crystal phase. The effect of molecular weight, shear rate, temperature as well as spinning drawn ratio on the mechanical behavior of 60PHB / PET copolyester fiber are shown that, lower shear rate (2~ 10 s~(-1)), higher temperature melting (300℃ ), lower temperature spinning (280℃ ) and higher molecular weight are favourable to the increase of the fiber mechanical properties. With the variance of drawn ratio, fiber mechanical property has a transition point due to traversion from shear-orientation to drawn-orientation. The copolyester fiber has high crystallinity, high orientation at the crystalline region, high chain orientation and high regular fibrillar structure.
