Progress towards determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion reactions

The latest development in determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. Within the IBUU04 version of an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model using a modified Gogny effective interaction, recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion are found to be consistent with a nuclear symmetry energy of E _sym(ρ)≈31.6(ρ/ρ₀)^1.05 at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Fluorescent nanoscale coordination polymers with cubic morphology and long range ordered structure were fabricated and exhibited efficient sensing for both nitroaromatic explosive and nitromethane due to large surface area to volume ratio and strong binding affinity to explosive molecules.

A nitridoosmium(VI) complex [Os(VI)(N)(sap)(OH(2))Cl] (H(2)sap = N-salicylidene-2-aminophenol) displays prominent in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer properties, induces S- and G2/M-phase arrest and forms a stable adduct with dianionic 5'-guanosine monophosphate.     

Cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes as topoisomerase IIα poisons

A platinum(II)-based major groove binder [Pt(II)(C^N)(C≡NR)(2)](+) (HC^N = 2-phenylpyridine (phpy), R = 2-naphthyl) was identified as a potent human topoisomerase IIα poison. It stabilizes the covalent TopoIIα-DNA cleavage complex and induces cancer cell death with potency significantly higher than the widely clinically used TopoIIα poison Vp-16.     

Construction of a functional [2]rotaxane with multilevel fluorescence responses

A rotaxane incorporating three different stations and fluorescent states (output) was prepared. The movement of the macrocycle can be easily detected by fluorescence change as an output signal and the macrocycle could be easily controlled to locate on three different stations of the thread by the tuning of acid/base (input).
