Remarks on an asymptotic method in combinatorics

The numerical problems involved in estimating the coefficients of a generating function w(z) which satisfies a functional equation F(z, w) = 0 are discussed. Particular attention is paid to algebraic functions.     

Fabrication and characterization of single-mode electro-optic polymer optical fiber

We report on what we believe is the first demonstration of single-mode polymer optical fiber with embedded electrodes. We show that the electrodes can be used to pole the dye-doped core and to electro-optically phase modulate the light in the waveguide.     

EFFECT OF DIETARY LIPID ON UV LIGHT CARCINOGENESIS IN THE HAIRLESS MOUSE

Abstract— Isocaloric feeding of diets varying in lipid content to albino hairless mice has shown that their susceptibility to skin tumorigenesis induced by simulated solar UV light was not affected by the level of polyunsaturated fat, 5% or 20%. However a qualitative effect of dietary lipid was demonstrated. Mice fed 20% saturated fat were almost completely protected from UV tumorigenesis when compared with mice fed 20% polyunsaturated fat. Multiple latent tumours were detected in the saturated fat-fed mice by subsequent dietary replenishment, suggesting that a requirement for dietary unsaturated fat exists for the promotion stage of UV-induced skin carcinogenesis.     

Counting permutations by their alternating runs

We find a formula for the number of permutations of [n] that have exactly s runs up and down. The formula is at once terminating, asymptotic, and exact. The asymptotic series is valid for n→∞, uniformly for s?(1−?)n/logn (?>0).     

Upper critical magnetic field in Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 and Ba(Fe0.93Co0.07)2As2

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the radio frequency magnetic penetration depth in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe₂As₂ and Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)₂As₂ single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. From our data, we construct an H-T-phase diagram for the inter-plane (H ‖ c) and in-plane (H ‖ ab) directions for both compounds. For both field orientations in Ba_0.68K_0.32Fe₂As₂ we find a concave curvature of the H _c2(T) lines with decreasing anisotropy and saturation towards lower temperature. Taking into account Pauli spin paramagnetism we can describe H _c2(T) and its anisotropy. In contrast, we find that Pauli paramagnetic pair breaking is not essential for Ba(Fe_0.93Co_0.07)₂As₂. For this electron-doped compound, the data support a H _c2(T) dependence that can be described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model for H ‖ ab and a two-gap behavior for H ‖ c.
