Dynamics of large semiflexible chains probed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy was used to probe the dynamics of lambda-phage DNA in aqueous solution labeled with the randomly intercalating dye TOTO. The linear macromolecules (i). carry more than one chromophore and (ii). are larger than the waist of the focal volume. The correlation function decays significantly faster than expected for a stiff globule of corresponding size but is in good agreement with the dynamic model of semiflexible chains including hydrodynamic interactions. As the chromophore density is lowered the correlation time decreases in accordance with this model.     

In the twilight zone between [2]pseudorotaxanes and [2]rotaxanes

A [2]pseudorotaxane, based on a semi-dumbbell-shaped component containing asymmetrically substituted monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene and 1,5-dioxynaphthalene recognition sites for encirclement by cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and with a "speed bump" in the form of a thiomethyl group situated between the two recognition sites, has been self-assembled. This supramolecular entity is a mixture in solution of two slowly interconverting [2]pseudorotaxanes, one of which is on the verge of being a [2]rotaxane at room temperature, allowing it to be isolated by employing flash column chromatography. These two [2]pseudorotaxanes were both characterized in solution by UV/Vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies (1D and 2D) and also by differential pulse voltammetry. The spectroscopic and electrochemical data reveal that one of the complexes behaves wholly as a [2]pseudorotaxane, while the other has some [2]rotaxane character to it. The kinetics of the shuttling of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) between the monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene and the 1,5-dioxynaphthalene recognition sites have been investigated at different temperatures. The shuttling processes, which are accompanied by detectable color changes, can be monitored using UV/Vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies; the spectroscopic data have been employed in the determination of the rate constants, free energies of activation, enthalpies of activation, and the entropies of activation for the translation of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) between the two recognition sites.     

Bile acids and sterols in urban sewage treatment plants

The composition of bile acids, sterols and sterones in water and sludge from an urban sewage treatment plant has been examined for assessment of the possible use of these compounds as pollution biomarkers. Samples were solvent-extracted, hydrolysed, and fractionated by column chromatography to separate acids, hydrocarbons, sterones and sterols. These fractions, except hydrocarbons, were methylated (acids only) and silylated for instrumental analysis. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis was performed in the electron-impact mode, using a non-polar capillary column. Lithocholic acids (3alpha- and 3beta-epimers), coprostanone, coprostanol, cholesterol, cholestenone, and cholestanone were found in sludge and all waters. However, the waters after secondary plant treatment contained mainly lithocholic acids epimers and coprostanone, pointing to these compounds as potential markers for urban treatment plant effluents in natural waters courses.     

The Predissociation of the 1(3)Sigma(-)(g) State of (7)Li(2)

The predissociation of the 1(3)Sigma(-)(g) v >/= 10 levels of (7)Li(2) has been observed by pulsed and continuous-wave perturbation-facilitated optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy (PFOODR). Our ab initio calculation shows that the inner wall of the 1(3)Sigma(-)(g) potential intersects the 1(3)Pi(g) repulsive potential at internuclear distance R = 2.00 ?. The predissociation is due to a DeltaS = 0, DeltaLambda = +/-1 rotational-electronic interaction with the repulsive 1(3)Pi(g) state. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.     

Experimental and theoretical evidence for the existence of absolute acoustic band gaps in two-dimensional solid phononic crystals

Experimental measurements of acoustic transmission through a solid-solid two-dimensional binary-composite medium constituted of a triangular array of parallel circular steel cylinders in an epoxy matrix are reported. Attention is restricted to propagation of elastic waves perpendicular to the cylinders. Measured transmitted spectra demonstrate the existence of absolute stop bands, i.e., band gaps independent of the direction of propagation in the plane perpendicular to the cylinders. Theoretical calculations of the band structure and transmission spectra using the plane wave expansion and the finite difference time domain methods support unambiguously the absolute nature of the observed band gaps.
