Mesoporous electrode material from alumina-stabilized anatase TiO2 for lithium ion batteries

A mesoporous electrode material whose structure is composed of anatase nanocrystals stabilized by alumina is reported. Powder X-ray diffraction shows the anatase phase only, but micro-Raman spectroscopy shows that the materials have a core-shell morphology with grains of bulk anatase covered by a thin rutile layer on the surface. This structure is unique when compared to analogous materials stabilized by zirconia (PNNL-1). Nitrogen adsorption isotherms demonstrate a monotonous increase in surface area and mesopore volume with increasing Al content. Thin film electrodes from these materials were characterized by lithium insertion electrochemistry. Cyclic voltammograms exhibit significant differences in Li accommodation in Al-free and Al-stabilized materials.     

Extensions of Szegö's theory of orthogonal polynomials,III

Let {ø _n (dμ)} be a system of orthonormal polynomials on the unit circle with respect to a measuredμ. Szegö's theory is concerned with the asymptotic behavior ofø _n (dμ) when logμ′∈L ¹. In what follows we will discuss the asymptotic behavior of the ratioø _n (dμ ₂)/ø _n (dμ ₁) on the unit circle whendμ ₁ anddμ ₂ are close in a sense (e.g.,dμ ₂=gdμ ₁, where g≥0 is such thatQ(e ^it )g(t) andQ(e ^it )/g(t) are bounded for a suitable polynomialQ) and μ ₁ ^′ >0 almost everywhere or (a somewhat weaker requirement) lim _n→∞Φ _n (dμ ₁,0)=0 for the monic polynomial Φ _n . The asymptotic behavior of the same fraction outside the unit circle was discussed in an earlier paper.     

The spectrum of a quasiperiodic Schrödinger operator

The spectrum (H) of the tight binding Fibonacci Hamiltonian (H _mn= _m,n+1+ _m+1,n + _m,n v(n),v(n)= ((n–1)), 1/ is the golden number) is shown to coincide with the dynamical spectrum, the set on which an infinite subsequence of traces of transfer matrices is bounded. The point spectrum is absent for any , and (H) is a Cantor set for 4. Combining this with Casdagli's earlier result, one finds that the spectrum is singular continuous for 16.On leave from the Central Research Institute for Physics, Budapest, Hungary     

160Tb nuclear orientation in yttrium single crystal

First experimental results of¹⁶⁰Tb nuclear orientation in yttrium single crystal matrix are described. The influence of external magnetic field in combination with the crystal field interaction is discussed.     

Synthesis and aqueous solution properties of a well-defined thermo-responsive schizophrenic diblock copolymer

We report only the second example of a thermo-responsive 'schizophrenic' diblock copolymer surfactant: unlike the original (meth)acrylamide-based example reported by Laschewsky and co-workers (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2002, 124, 3787), this new methacrylate-based diblock copolymer is near-monodisperse, readily synthesized in high yield and exhibits a broad temperature range between the two micelle transitions.     

The Conductance- and Capacitance-Frequency Characteristics of the Rectifying Junctions Formed by Sublimation of Organic Pyronine-B on p-Type Silicon

The rectifying junction characteristics of the organic compound pyronine-B film on a p-type Si substrate has been studied. The pyronine-B has been sublimed on the top of p-Si surface. The barrier height and ideality factor values of 0.79±0.04 and 1.13±0.06 eV for this structure have been obtained from the forward bias current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. From the low capacitance-frequency (C-f) characteristics as well as conductance-frequency (G-f) characteristics, the energy distribution of the interface states and their relaxation time have been determined in the energy range of (0.53−E_v)-(0.79−E_v) eV taking into account the forward bias I-V data. The interface state density N_ss ranges from 4.93×10¹⁰ cm⁻² eV⁻¹ in (0.79−E_v) eV to 3.67×10¹³ cm⁻² eV⁻¹ in (0.53−E_v) eV. Furthermore, the relaxation ranges from 3.80×10⁻³ s in (0.53−E_v) eV to 4.21×10⁻⁴ s in (0.79−E_v) eV. It has been seen that the interface state density has an exponential rise with bias from the midgap towards the top of the valence band. The relaxation time shows a slow exponential rise with bias from the top of the valence band towards the midgap.     

Optical sensors based on hybrid DNA/conjugated polymer complexes

Single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) can specifically bind to various targets, including a complementary ss-DNA, ions, proteins, drugs, and so forth. When binding takes place, the oligonucleotide probe often undergoes a conformational transition. This conformational change of the negatively charged ss-DNA can be detected by using a water-soluble, cationic polythiophene derivative, which transduces the complex formation into an optical (colorimetric or fluorometric) signal without any labeling of the probe or the target. This simple and rapid methodology has enabled the specific and sensitive detection of nucleic acids and human thrombin. This new biophotonic tool can easily be applied to the detection of various other biomolecules and is also useful in the high-throughput screening of new drugs.     

Intercalation of 1,2-Alkanediols into α-Zirconium Hydrogenphosphate

Intercalation compounds of α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · H₂O with 1,2-alkanediols (from C3 to C16) have been prepared by replacing 1-propanol in α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · 2C₃H₇OH with the desired 1,2-alkanediols by a treatment in a microwave field. It was found that the intercalates contain 1.5 molecules of diol per formula unit. The diol molecules are placed between the host layers in a bimolecular way with their aliphatic chains tilted at an angle of 51°. The diol molecules are anchored in the interlayer space by H-bonds. A mixed intercalate, containing 1,2-butanediol and 1,2-decanediol in a roughly equimolar ratio, is formed when the α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · 2C₃H₇OH intercalate, suspended in a mixture of 1,2-butanediol and 1,2-decanediol, is exposed to microwave radiation. No new phase containing both types of the guest molecules was observed when the 1-propanol intercalate, suspended in a mixture of 1-propanol and 1,2-octanediol, is exposed to microwave radiation.     

An oestrogen-derivative labeled with 99mTc and its radiopharmaceutical potential

An oestrogen derivative 3,17-a-oestradiolyl propyl 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecanyl-1-(4-methylbenzoic acid)ester (ESTCPTA) that is 3,17-a-oestradiolyl propinol coupled to 1-(4-methylbenzoic acid)1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (CPTA) was synthesized in five steps. The product was purified by recrystallization in ethyl alcohol, and analysed by NMR and IR spectroscopy. ESTCPTA was labeled with ^99mTc and radio thin layer chromatography (RTLC) and radio-paper electrophoresis were used to determine the radiochemical yields. Specific activity was approximately 23.7 GBq/mmol and the labeling yield was over 95%. The biodistribution studies were performed on female Albino Wistar rats. The rats were sacricified by ether narcotization at certain time intervals and the activity of the organs was counted by a gamma counter. The activity per gram tissue was calculated and time activity curves were generated.
