Rapid and sensitive determination of beta-phenylethylamine in animal brains by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorometric detection

A reversed phase HPLC method with fluorometric detection for the analysis of beta-phenylethylamine has been developed using p-methoxyphenylethylamine as an internal standard. Two columns, containing 200 microL of Dowex 50-X8 and Amberlite CG-50 respectively, were used to prepare a fraction containing beta-phenylethylamine. The recoveries of beta-phenylethylamine and p-methoxyphenylethylamine were 53.9 +/- 9.4% and 68.1 +/- 12.4%, respectively, and elution profile of p-methoxyphenylethylamine was sufficiently well correlated with that of beta-phenylethylamine. Regional distributions of beta-phenylethylamine in rat and mouse brains were determined. The highest concentrations were found in hypothalamus and hippocampus in both animals.     

Formation of polyelectrolyte complexes

Interactions between polyelectrolytes carrying opposite charges in aqueous media may lead to either complex coacervation or the formation of interpolymer complexes, depending on the charge density and concentration of polymer components, ionic strength, temperature, and pH. The liquid-liquid phase separation referred to as complex coacervation was thought by Oparin to be an origin of prebiological systems. This article summarizes our recent results on the intermolecular interactions between charged polymer molecules, from the point of view of biological interests.     

1.3?m InGaAsP/InP distributed-feedback P-substrate partially inverted buried-heterostructure laser diode

A novel 1.3?m InGaAsP/lnP distributed-feedback buried-heterostructure laser diode on p-type InP substrate has been developed utilising a dopant diffusion technique. The laser has achieved a threshold current as low as 20 mA and high output power of 32 mW under CW and SLM operation.
