Palladium-catalyzed direct arylation of aryl(azaaryl)methanes with aryl halides providing triarylmethanes

Direct arylation of aryl(azaaryl)methanes with aryl halides takes place at the benzylic position in the presence of a hydroxide base under palladium catalysis to yield triarylmethanes.     

Preparation and reaction of 2-aryl-3-silyl-1,3-butadiene

[reaction: see text] A conjugated pi-electron compound, 2-aryl-3-silyl-1,3-butadiene, was easily prepared from 1-benzyloxy-3-silyl-2-propyne, bis(iodozincio)methane, and an aryl halide in the presence of nickel catalyst. A subsequent cross-coupling reaction of the product with another aryl halide gave an unsymmetrical 2,3-diaryl-1,3-butadiene efficiently.     

The effect of phenoxy oxygen atoms on extremely high extraction ability and less separation efficiency of trivalent rare earth elements with tetraphosphonic acid derivative of calix[4]arene

A cone confomational p-t-octylcalix[4]arene with four methylenephosphonic acids at the lower rim as well as its monomeric analog have been synthesized as a new extraction reagent to investigate the extraction behavior of the nine trivalent rare earth elements: Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho and Er. The new calix[4]arene exhibited significantly higher extraction capacity than not only the monomeric derivative and the commercial extraction reagent, 2-ethylhexyl hydrogen 2-ethylhexylphosphonate, but also the cone conformational calix[4]arene extractants employed in our previous work, composed of a tetrapropylenephosphonic acid with a longer spacer, a tetraphosphonic acid at the upper rim, and tetraacetic acid at the lower rim. A dependence on the pH was observed for the new extractant in the highly acidic region, and the extraction took place via a simple ion-exchange mechanism. Using slope analysis, the stoichiometries of tetrameric and monomeric extractants to rare earth metal ions were determined to be 2:1 and 3:1, respectively. Using the proposed extraction equations, extraction equilibrium constants and separation factors were estimated. The extremely high extraction ability and moderate separation efficiency were attributed to the chelating effect of the phosphonic acid and the phenoxy oxygen atom. The effect of the phenoxy oxygen atom on extraction ability and separation efficiency of calix[4]arene derivatives was found to be significant.     

Formation of organomagnesium compounds via EtMgBr-mediated radical cyclization of allyl beta-iodoacetals

[reaction: see text] Treatment of allyl beta-iodoacetals with ethylmagnesium bromide in THF provided tetrahydrofuran derivatives in good yields. On the other hand, the reaction in DME provided tetrahydrofuranylmethylmagnesium compounds in good yields.     

Palladium(0)-catalyzed stereoselective cyclization of allenenes: divergent synthesis of pyrrolidines and 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes from single allenenes

Two novel palladium(0)-catalyzed cyclizations of allenenes are described. Treatment of allenenes such as N-(1-alkyl-2,3-butadienyl)-N-allylsulfonamide with an aryl halide and K(2)CO(3) in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(PPh(3))(4) in dioxane affords 2,3-cis-pyrrolidines in a stereoselective manner. In sharp contrast, cyclization of the same allenenes using catalytic Pd(2)(dba)(3) x CHCl(3) in the presence of allyl methyl carbonate in CH(3)CN leads to stereoselective formation of a 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane framework in moderate yields.     

Highly enantioselective catalytic carbon dioxide incorporation reaction: nickel-catalyzed asymmetric carboxylative cyclization of bis-1,3-dienes

A method for nickel-catalyzed asymmetric carbon dioxide (CO2) incorporation via carbon-carbon bond formation was developed. In the presence of a catalytic amount of Ni(acac)2 and MeO-MOP, various bis-1,3-dienes reacted with CO2 (1 atm) and a diorganozinc reagent (Me2Zn or Ph2Zn) to afford cyclic carboxylic acids in good yields (71-100%) and with high enantioselectivities (90-96% ee).     

Schulzeines A-C, new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors from the marine sponge Penares schulzei

Three new alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, schulzeines A-C (1-3), were isolated from the marine sponge Penares schulzei. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis and chemical degradations to be the isoquinoline alkaloids, encompassing two amino acids, and C(28) fatty acid, the last of which was sulfated. Absolute stereochemistry of schulzeines was determined by application of the modified Mosher analysis to fragments obtained by chemical degradation. Schulzeines A-C inhibit alpha-glucosidase with IC(50) values of 48-170 nM.     

Novel spirocyclic trichothecanes, spirotenuipesine A and B, isolated from entomopathogenic fungus, Paecilomyces tenuipes

Entomopathogenic fungi forming fruiting bodies have been employed as tonics and antitussives from ancient times. Paecilomyces tenuipes, which is also called Isaria japonica, is a very popular entomopathogenic fungus and is often considered a health food in northeast Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. We cultivated the fruiting bodies of Paecilomyces tenuipes. Among the large-scale cultivations, fruiting body grown in barley grain contained two novel spirocyclic trichothecane derivatives, spirotenuipesine A (1) and B (2), and known trichothecane mycotoxins. Compounds 1 and 2 showed potent activity in neurotrophic factor biosynthesis in glial cells. The isolation of these compounds indicated that P. tenuipes is a promising source for producing various biologically active substances including trichothecanes. It is noteworthy that trichothecane mycotoxins are present in Paecilomyces tenuipes, which is typically used in medicinal health food.     

Counter-current chromatographic separation of nucleic acid constituents with a hydrophilic solvent system

Nucleic acid constituents such as nucleobases, nucleosides and nucleotides were separated by counter-current chromatography using type J coil planet centrifuge. The separation was performed with a hydrophilic solvent system composed of 1-propanol/800 mM potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) (1:1, v/v) by eluting the lower aqueous phase at a flow-rate of 0.5 ml/min. Eight selected nucleic acid constituents (4.0 mg, 0.5 mg of each), uridine monophosphate (UMP), adenosine monophosphate (AMP), deoxyadenosine monophosphate (dAMP), uridine, urasile, deoxy uridine, adenosine and adenine were well resolved within 160 min.
