Ab initio torsional potentials in silole dimers

The potential barriers for the internal rotation of silole dimers are studied theoretically using the ab initio molecular orbital method at the RHF/6-31G** level of calculations. In 2,2′-bisilole, it is found that the anti-conformation is the most stable structure in the ground state and that the potential barrier height for rotation over the perpendicular conformation is 3.3 kcal/mol. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Effects of Roxadustat on Erythropoietin Production in the Rat Body

Anemia is a major complication of chronic renal failure. To treat this anemia, prolylhydroxylase domain enzyme (PHD) inhibitors as well as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) have been used. Although PHD inhibitors rapidly stimulate erythropoietin (Epo) production, the precise sites of Epo production following the administration of these drugs have not been identified. We developed a novel method for the detection of the Epo protein that employs deglycosylation-coupled Western blotting. With protein deglycosylation, tissue Epo contents can be quantified over an extremely wide range. Using this method, we examined the effects of the PHD inhibitor, Roxadustat (ROX), and severe hypoxia on Epo production in various tissues in rats. We observed that ROX increased Epo mRNA expression in both the kidneys and liver. However, Epo protein was detected in the kidneys but not in the liver. Epo protein was also detected in the salivary glands, spleen, epididymis and ovaries. However, both PHD inhibitors (ROX) and severe hypoxia increased the Epo protein abundance only in the kidneys. These data show that, while Epo is produced in many tissues, PHD inhibitors as well as severe hypoxia regulate Epo production only in the kidneys.     

Chemical and genetic diversity of Ligularia virgaurea collected in northern Sichuan and adjacent areas of China. Isolation of 13 new compounds

Root chemicals and DNA sequences were analyzed for Ligularia virgaurea collected in the northern Sichuan Province and adjacent areas of China. Thirty-eight samples were found to contain five chemotypes, two known and three new ones. From samples of the new chemotypes, 13 new compounds were isolated, including 3 sesquiterpene dimers and some rearranged eremophilanes. The DNA sequences suggested that the chemotype differentiation had a genetic origin.     

Reductive coupling of N-methoxycarbonyl lactams with benzophenone and 9-fluorenone by low-valent titanium

The reductive coupling of N-methoxycarbonyl lactams with benzophenone by Zn-TiCl₄ in THF gave cross-coupled products as cyclic α-diphenylidene-N-methoxycarbonylamines and ring-opening α,α-diphenyl-α-hydroxy-ω-(N-methoxycarbonyl)amino ketones selectively depending on the reduction conditions. The reductive coupling of N-methoxycarbonyl lactams with 9-fluorenone by Zn-TiCl₄ gave cyclic α-(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-N-methoxycarbonylamines preferentially irrespective to the conditions.     

Measurement of mean free paths for inelastic electron scattering of Si and SiO2

The effects of accelerating voltage and collection angle on the mean free path for all inelastic electron scattering (lambdap), which is an important parameter for determining specimen thickness by using electron energy-loss spectroscopy, were investigated with crystalline Si and amorphous SiO2. First, thickness of Si film was measured with the convergent-beam electron diffraction method, while thickness of SiO2 particles was estimated from their spherical shape. Then from electron energy-loss spectra, lambdap was evaluated for Si film and SiO2 particles by changing the accelerating voltage (100 to approximately 300 kV) and the collection angle for the scattered electrons. Under the condition of no objective aperture, lambdap for Si film and SiO2 particles was found to increase with the increase of accelerating voltage and to take values of 180+/-6 nm (Si) and 247+/-8 nm (SiO2) at 300 kV. Also, it was found that lambdap in both cases decreases drastically with the increase of collection angle in the range smaller than 25 mrad, while it tends to take a constant value at the collection angle larger than 25 mrad at 200 kV.     

Cyclization of 1,6-enynes with allylic chromate species

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 1,6-enynes with tetramethallylchromate induces a cyclization reaction with concurrent introduction of a methallyl group. A catalytic amount of CrCl(3) combined with methallylmagnesium chloride also achieves this cyclization process. The resultant cyclic organometallic species undergo further functionalization upon reaction with electrophiles.     

An assembled complex of palladium and non-cross-linked amphiphilic polymer: a highly active and recyclable catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction

An insoluble and assembled catalyst of palladium and a non-cross-linked amphiphilic polymer were developed. In the presence of 50-500 ppm mol equiv of catalyst, the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction proceeded efficiently under organic solvent-free conditions. The catalyst was reused 10 times without any decrease in activity and was recycled without any special treatment.[structure: see text]     

Extremely low vertical-emittance beam in the accelerator test facility at KEK

Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than 1% of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than 2.8 x 10(-8) rad m at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.
