Photon consciousness: Fact or fancy?

An experiment designed to test the highly speculative hypothesis of photon consciousness was executed. It was found that, within the accuracy attainable with the apparatus, there is no empirical justification for the hypothesis.     

Generalised model for programmable sequence controllers

A theoretical analysis of the operation of a programmable sequence controller is presented. From this, a generalised model is developed that enables the sequence controller to be implemented as a sequential machine operating in conjunction with a stored program.     

Imidazole alkaloids of Macrorungia longistrobus: Revised structures and total syntheses

By total synthesis, it was shown that the imidazole alkaloids dehydroisolongistrobine and isolongistrobine possess structures 1 and 2, respectively, rather than the structures proposed by Arndt, Eggers and Jordaan in 1969. Reaction of methyl 1-methylimidazole-5-carboxylate with phenylsulfonylmethyl magnesium bromide provided a β-ketosulfone which was alkylated with o-nitrobenzyl bromide to provide 6. In the key step, amino alcohol 10 and tetrahydroquinoline 8 were obtained through aluminum amalgam reduction of 6. 8 was converted to isomacrorine 12. 10 could be converted to 1 by a three-step sequence; 2 was obtained from 10 by acylation with 4-pentenoyl chloride, oxidation, and osmium tetroxide catalyzed periodate cleavage of the vinyl group. Comparison of samples of synthetic alkaloids 1 and 2 with the corresponding alkaloids from natural sources showed that the natural and synthetic samples of each were identical.

The thiazolidine β-lactam 3 adds acrolein in a Michael type reaction. The resulting 'carbinolamide 4 is converted to 8-β-phenylacetamido-homoceph-4-em-5-carboxylic acid ( 1 ) by previously described methods.     

Mechanical resonance dispersion in polytetrafluorethylene rods in transverse vibration

Summary Polytetrafluorethylene rods in transverse vibration exhibit sharp non-harmonic resonances when subjected to a static tensile stress during vibration. The extent and location of the resonances are critically dependent on the exact static stress state and history of the rods. Rods under no external tension have no anomalous behavior in the range 100 to 2000 cps, but under static tension varying from 1.5×10⁵ to 3.0×10⁶ dynes/cm² (2.2 to 44 psi) sharp resonances appear in the vicinity of 400 cps. The mechanical resonance dispersions in complex shear compliance previously reported byFitzgerald are thus substantiated by the present work. The failure of certain other investigators to observe the dispersion in polytetrafluorethylene is attributed to the fact that insufficient attention was paid to the static stress conditions in their tests.

We relate the semiclassical asymptotics of the 6j symbols for the quantized enveloping algebra at q a root of unity (resp. q real positive) to the geometry of spherical (resp. hyperbolic) tetrahedra.     

Photodissociation spectrum of CH3I+ prepared by multiphoton ionization

Two-photon resonant multiphoton ionization has been used to prepare rotationally cooled and selected CH₃I⁺ ions with controlled vibrational and electronic distributions. These ions are photodissociated by a second laser. The highly simplified photodissociation spectrum displays a clear dissociation threshold as well as bands hidden in earlier spectra. The data suggests corrections to previously determined vibrational constants.
