Because sentences for drug possession depend on the mass of the seized drug, testing laboratories must often determine the summed mass of numerous items submitted under a single case. One common practice for this purpose is to continue analyzing and weighing samples until a legal threshold is passed, at which point it is important to inform the court whether the summed mass is significantly above the threshold, or only marginally so. This paper develops a means for estimating the uncertainty of the summed mass for the common situation where the readability, d, of the balance dominates the uncertainty. It is seen that for all sample sizes the uncertainty, UM, is given by the remarkable simple expression UM = (d/2) × [N + SQRT(3N)] + N × CCE, where N is the number of items and CCE is the absolute value of the calibration check error. In most instances, this can be further simplified to UM = N × d.  相似文献

A new class of self-assembling hexa-peri-hexbenzocoronene (HBC)-fullerene hybrid materials has been synthesized and characterized. Photoluminescence experiments indicate that energy transfer processes can be tuned in these donor-acceptor systems by varying the length and nature of the linker group. In preliminary device testing, ambipolar charge transport behavior is observed in organic field effect transistors, while single active component organic photovoltaic devices consisting of these materials achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency of 30%.  相似文献

Two DNA bases, 5-methylcytosine (5mC) and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC), marks of epigenetic modification, are recognized in immobilized DNA strands and distinguished from G, A, T and C by nanopore current recording. This paper proposes real linear transceivers employing minimum redundancy, unlike the standard block transceivers that require, at least, L elements of redundancy, where L is the channel order. In all block-based systems, there is an inherent interblock interference (IBI) that can be eliminated by inserting redundancy. For transceivers based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the redundancy induces a circulant channel matrix, allowing superfast implementations. Although it has been known for some time that the minimum redundancy for IBI-free designs of block transceivers is ⌈L/2⌉, only recently practical DFT-based solutions using minimum redundancy were proposed. However, the extension of these solutions to real transforms, such as the discrete Hartley transform (DHT), is not straightforward. The only known solution imposes a symmetry on the channel model that is unlikely to be met in practice. This paper proposes transceivers with practical zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receivers using DHT, diagonal, and antidiagonal matrices. The resulting systems are asymptotically as simple as orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) and single-carrier with frequency-domain (SC-FD) equalization transceivers. In addition, they do not enforce constraints on the channel model. Several computer simulations indicate the higher throughput of the proposals as compared to the standard solutions.  相似文献

In stochastic programming models we always face the problem of how to represent the random variables. This is particularly difficult with multidimensional distributions. We present an algorithm that produces a discrete joint distribution consistent with specified values of the first four marginal moments and correlations. The joint distribution is constructed by decomposing the multivariate problem into univariate ones, and using an iterative procedure that combines simulation, Cholesky decomposition and various transformations to achieve the correct correlations without changing the marginal moments.With the algorithm, we can generate 1000 one-period scenarios for 12 random variables in 16 seconds, and for 20 random variables in 48 seconds, on a Pentium III machine.  相似文献

Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems use multiple antenna elements at transmit and receive to offer improved capacity over single antenna topologies in multipath channels. In such systems, the antenna properties as well as the multipath channel characteristics play a key role in determining communication performance. This paper reviews recent research findings concerning antennas and propagation in MIMO systems. Issues considered include channel capacity computation, channel measurement and modeling approaches, and the impact of antenna element properties and array configuration on system performance. Throughout the discussion, outstanding research questions in these areas are highlighted.  相似文献

A new isolated high frequency high power DC-DC converter full bridge topology employing one resonant "soft" switching pole that is zero voltage switched and one phase-shifted hard switching pole with loss limited switching for primary switching is presented. The devices in the loss limited pole do not have resonant capacitors across them, but exhibit significantly lower losses than conventional hard switching as the energy dissipation is limited by the finite energy stored in the leakage inductance. This unique combination of zero voltage switching and loss limited switching reduces the switching loss in all primary devices to lower levels. Isolation is achieved by a coaxially wound high frequency transformer with ultra low leakage which increases throughput and efficiency. A novel nondissipative secondary rectifier clamp allows excellent control of reverse recovery energy. Converters that produce 128 kW at 25 kHz have been developed and are commercially available. As this topology exhibits complete control of all parasitic loss mechanisms, it can be easily scaled to higher power levels.  相似文献

The use of an HF propagation mode, called rear-vertical incidence skywave (NVIS), by the US Marine Corps is discussed. In an NVIS system, HF signals are radiated nearly vertically. The signal returned from the ionosphere covers the skip zone with an omnidirectional pattern providing a communications range from the transmitter site out to a radial distance of 0 to 300 miles. The development of HF communication systems by the Marine Corps in the 1980s is outlined. The application of several HF communication systems during Operation Desert Storm is described  相似文献
