Oxidative reactivity of S-nitrosoglutathione with Hantzsch 1,4-dihydropyridine

[formula: see text] S-Nitrosoglutathione oxidized 4-substituted Hantzsch 1,4-dihydropyridines in CH3CN/H2O or CH3CN/phosphate aqueous buffer solution to give aromatic products in various yields.     

Synthesis of four diastereomeric 3,5-dialkoxy-2,4-dimethylalkanals by a simple extension of the non-aldol aldol process to bis(propionates)

[formula: see text] The synthesis of all four diastereomers of bis(propionates), 3,5-dialkoxy-2,4-dimethylalkanals, by non-aldol aldol chemistry is described. The epoxy alcohols (3, 4) were converted into the mesylates (9, 11) which were cleanly rearranged to the desired 3,5-bis(oxygenated)-2,4-dimethylalkanals (10, 12) in high yield. The epoxy mesylates (13, 16) gave the desired products (14, 17) in good yield on treatment with TMSOTf and a hindered base.     

Chiral discrimination of limonene by use of beta-cyclodextrin-coated quartz-crystal-microbalances (QCMs) and data evaluation by artificial neuronal networks

The enantiomeric composition of the chiral flavoring agent limonene was analyzed by means of a quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. As chiral selectors three different modified beta-cyclodextrins were investigated. The selector molecules were applied as mixtures in different polysiloxane matrices. The chiral separation factors alpha for limonene obtained at 30 degrees C by gas chromatography and by use of the QCM sensor were comparable. Evaluation of sensor data was performed by use of an artificial neuronal network (ANN); this enabled prediction of the enantiomeric composition of the gas mixtures.     

A metallo-capped polyrotaxane containing calix[4]arenes and cyclodextrins and its highly selective binding for Ca2+

A water-soluble nanometer-scale metallocapped polyrotaxane has been prepared by the inclusion complexation of azo-calixarenes with metallo-bridged bis(beta-CD)s, displaying highly selective binding for Ca(2+).     

Selective initiation of nonconjugated dienes containing electron donor–electron acceptor systems. II. Polymerization studies of vinyl ether–β-nitrostyrenes

The monomer series, o-, m-, and p-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)-β-nitrostyrenes, was studied. All three monomers were selectively polymerized through the electron-donating vinyloxy group via cationic initiation. The linear polymers from the meta and para isomers containing the electron-accepting nitrovinyl group were readily crosslinked via anionic initiation. The polymer derived from the ortho isomer was not crosslinked by this mechanism, an observation in accord with results previously reported from these laboratories in which it was shown that all o-substituted-β-nitrostyrenes having ortho substituents larger than fluorine exhibited a sterically inhibited propagation step. The meta and para isomers of this series were selectively polymerized through the electron-accepting nitrovinyl group via anionic initiation. Because of the fact that the resulting polymers were soluble only in highly polar solvents, subsequent crosslinking of these polymers via cationic initiation could not be accomplished. However, these polymers showed strong tendencies to undergo crosslinking upon long exposure to air. Because of the sterically induced ortho effect referred to above, no significant polymerization occurred in the case of the ortho isomer of this series via anionic initiation. However, it was shown in this case that initiation via the anion was rapid, and that the slow step was propagation.     

Chiral separation of N-(trans-4-isopropylcyclohexylcarbonyl)-D,L-phenylalanine isomers by high performance liquid chromatography

Summary A high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the chiral separation of a new anti-diabetic agent, N-(trans-4-isopropylcyclohexylcarbonyl)-D-phenylalanine, and its L-enantiomer. The separation was performed on a Sumichiral OA-3300 column. Optimized mobile phase was 0.025 mol.L⁻¹ ammonium acetate in methanol solution. UV detection was at 210 nm. Baseline chiral separation was obtained within 12 minutes. The detection limits are 80 pg for the D-enantiomer and 120 pg for the L-enantiomer. RSD of the method was below 1% (n=5).
