The future of telecommunications is to reach mass population in all regions of the world with services that will benefit humankind leading to the betterment of its and all life in our planet. Telecommunications and its services have to and will become part of life as is breathing to mankind. This future is by far not achieved and for some time to come whatever we develop there is always a next step to it. After all, that keeps our world going.Currently we are again at that stage of work on future generation communications where these words have not yet achieved a consensus. In this paper let us look at the crystal ball and try to materialize at least in words what we see in it [1–20].We first define fourth generation (4G) communication system and beyond 3G (B3G). Then we look at the requirements for future generation communications from the perspective of the users, the operators, and the service providers. Next the technologies that should and are being developed to materialize the future generation are discussed. A dip is also taken into the ongoing standardization or pre-standardization efforts. At first the introduction section tries to raise questions on the “future”.Prof. Dr. Ramjee Prasad, while being a father always there for his children, is also a visionary and a leader in the field of telecommunications. It is with pride and honour that I write in this paper, on the occasion of 60th birthday of my father, my thoughts of the future of telecommunications. I owe to him and my mother the knowledge that I present and the future that I have written of. Anand Raghawa Prasad Senior Member IEEE, project manager network level security model group, DoCoMo Euro-Labs, Munich, Germany was born in Ranchi, India. He received his Ph.D. degree in the field of WLANs: protocols, security and deployment and MSc (Ir.) degree in the field of Self Similarity in ATM Network Traffic from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 2003 and 1996, respectively. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as research engineer and later project leader in Uniden Corporation, Tokyo, Japan. From 1998 to 2000, he was distinguished member of technical staff and worked as systems architect for IEEE 802.11 based WLANs (WaveLAN and ORiNOCO) in Lucent Technologies, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands. Subsequently, he was technical director at Genista Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, and technical advisor of PCOM:I3, Aalborg, Denmark. He was a voting member of IEEE 802.11 and he is an active participant of 3GPP. In addition to his publications in journals, international conferences and chapters in books, he has 20$+$ patent applications in the field of wireless communications and has co-edited a book titled “WLAN Systems and Wireless IP for Next Generation Communications” and co-authored a book on “Wireless LANs and Wireless IP: Security, Mobility, QoS and Mobile Network Integration” both published by Artech House in 2002 and 2005 respectively. He is writing a book on “Security in Wireless Networks and Mobile Platforms” to be published in August 2006. He has participated in organizing of various International Conferences including VTC, PIMRC and WPMC. He was a guest editor of a special issue on “Security for Next Generation Communications” of the Springer Journal on Wireless Personal Communications and he is a guest editor of a special issue on “Seamless Handover in Next Generation Wireless/Mobile Communications” of Wireless Personal Communications.  相似文献

Refractory Schottky barriers have been incorporated in millimetre GaAs mixer diodes to improve r.f. performance and burnout resistance. It is shown that low power r.f. sputter deposition of TiW and Ti-Mo refractories results in degradation of noise temperature ratio and to a first approximation does not affect d.c. parameters, especially the ideality factor.  相似文献

Extensive data now available on the non-thermal background radio emission from different celestial directions, and recent measurements on the energy spectrum of cosmic ray electrons in the vicinity of the earth permit one to deduce information on the mean magnetic fields and cosmic electron spectra needed to exist in different regions of the Galaxy. It is found that in order to explain quantitatively the background radio brightness distributions from the Galaxy one needs (i) the same or nearly same electron spectrum that exists in the near interstellar space, to exist in almost all regions of Galactic space, (ii) a mean magnetic field close to 6×10?6 Gauss in the Disc in the direction of the Anti-centre, (iii) a mean magnetic field close to 2·5×10?6 Gauss in the radio Halo and (iv) a mean magnetic field probably close to 9·5×10?6 Gauss towards the Galactic Ridge in the direction of the Centre. Some inferences are also drawn on the confinement of cosmic rays in the Galaxy.  相似文献

Anisotropic metal nanoparticles: Synthesis, assembly, and optical applications   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16  
This feature article highlights work from the authors' laboratories on the synthesis, assembly, reactivity, and optical applications of metallic nanoparticles of nonspherical shape, especially nanorods. The synthesis is a seed-mediated growth procedure, in which metal salts are reduced initially with a strong reducing agent, in water, to produce approximately 4 nm seed particles. Subsequent reduction of more metal salt with a weak reducing agent, in the presence of structure-directing additives, leads to the controlled formation of nanorods of specified aspect ratio and can also yield other shapes of nanoparticles (stars, tetrapods, blocks, cubes, etc.). Variations in reaction conditions and crystallographic analysis of gold nanorods have led to insight into the growth mechanism of these materials. Assembly of nanorods can be driven by simple evaporation from solution or by rational design with molecular-scale connectors. Short nanorods appear to be more chemically reactive than long nanorods. Finally, optical applications in sensing and imaging, which take advantage of the visible light absorption and scattering properties of the nanorods, are discussed.  相似文献

We have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the spectral behavior and the transmission and reflection performance of a photonic-crystal (PhC) mode converter upon an InP substrate. This taper exhibits 70% transmission efficiency on an 80-nm bandwidth when it couples a ridge access guide to a strongly confined single-missing-row PhC guide. Such a taper design included in a PhC bend contributes a large benefit to the overall transmission budget of the PhC-based link.  相似文献

Determination of the phase or phase derivative from interferometric fringe patterns is an important task in optical interferometry. The use of wavelet ridges was recently shown to be an effective method for phase retrieval from a single fringe pattern. One necessary requirement in this method is the need for carrier frequency. In cases when carrier frequency is not available, the novel phase-shifting windowed Fourier ridges method can be used. Phase derivatives with the proper sign can be directly retrieved even in the presence of noise. An application for curvature determination from speckle shearographic fringes demonstrates the effectiveness of the method.  相似文献
