Core-level binding energy shifts in dilute alloys

Core level binding energy shifts for the element A of a large number of dilute alloys AB have been measured, where the concentration of the dilute component A is 10% or less. The experimental shifts are analysed in terms of alloy heat of formation data, for which we have used Miedema's semi-empirical scheme. Good overall agreement is obtained between the experimental data and the calculated values, encouraging the use of electron spectroscopy for evaluating solution energies of metallic systems.     

Wide-angle high-energy proton spectra by 800 MeV/A C,Ne, and Ar beams

Inclusive proton spectra, as well as two-particle correlations, resulting from collisions between energetic nuclei have been measured. Protons associated with large momentum transfers show exponential-type energy distributions having a decay constant about (70–90 MeV)^?1. For light-mass targets a strong two-particle correlation has been observed, which is kinematically consistent with quasi-elastic pp scatterings.

An Analysis of Radio Frequency in Interference Due to Mixer Intermodulation Products

The colocation of high-power communication transmitters and sensitive receivers at a common site frequently causes radio frequency interference due to the generation of spurious intermodulation frequencies in the receiver mixer. These spurious frequencies result from the mixing of the transmitter frequencies with each other and with the receiver local oscillator in the receiver mixer. The problem treated in this paper is that of obtaining an analytical method of predicting the amplitudes of these spurious intermodulation frequencies having been given the amplitude of each of the frequencies at the mixer input.     

Measurement of frequency differences between visible laser lines up to 170GHz using metal-insulator-metal point contact diodes

Frequency differences of up to 170 GHz between a cw dye laser and a krypton laser at 568 nm were measured by mixing laser and microware radiation with a metalinsulator-metal point contact diode. Beat signals are well above noise and there is still great potential for improvement when better microwave oscillators are used. From the measurements reported it follows that the diode can be used for determining still higher frequency differences of visible laser radiation.     

Indications about the shape of the universe from the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe data

It is shown that the recent observations of NASA's Explorer mission, "Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe," hint that our Universe may possess a nontrivial topology. As an example we discuss the Picard space which is stretched out into an infinitely long horn but with finite volume.
