Inclusion is the meaningful participation of students with disabilities in general education classrooms. The CLASS project (Creating Laboratory Access for Science Students) is a unique initiative offering training and resources to help educators provide students with a variety of physical, sensory and learning disabilities equal access in the science laboratory or field. To determine whether participants believed a 2‐week residential workshop sponsored by CLASS raised disability awareness and provided teacher training in inclusive science teaching practice, a multipoint Likert scale survey and questionnaire was completed by all participants (N= 20) in four workshops. Participants reported large gains in their preparedness to teach science to students with disabilities. Participants also reported gains in their familiarity with instructional strategies, curricula, and resources and their ability to design, select, and modify activities for students with disabilities. Finally, shifts in attitudes about teaching science to students with disabilities were noted. 相似文献

The SIR-C/X-SAR imaging radar took its first flight on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in April 1994 and flew for a second time in October 1994. This multifrequency radar has fully polarimetric capability at L- and C-band, and a single polarization at X-band (X-SAR). The Endeavour missions were designated the Space Radar Laboratory-1 (SRL-1) and -2 (SRL-2). Calibration of polarimetric L- and C-band data for all the different modes SIR-C offers is an especially complicated problem. The solution involves extensive analysis of pre-flight test data to come up with a model of the system, analysis of in-flight test data to determine the antenna pattern and gains of the system during operation, and analysis of data from over fourteen calibration sites distributed around the SIR-C/X-SAR orbit track. The SRL missions were the first time a multifrequency polarimetric imaging radar employing a phased array antenna has been flown in space. Calibration of SIR-C data products involved some unique technical problems given the complexity of the radar system. Micron and submicron-scale features of aldehyde functionality were fabricated in polymer films by photolithography to develop a platform for protein immobilization and assembly at a biologically relevant scale. Films containing the pH-reactive polymer poly(3,3'-diethoxypropyl methacrylate) and a photoacid generator (PAG) were patterned from 500 nm to 40 mum by exposure to 365 nm (i-line) light. Upon PAG activation and hydrolysis of acetals, aldehyde groups formed. After the films were incubated with a biotinylated aldehyde reactive probe, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results were consistent with biotin being attached to the surface. The background was subsequently passivated by flood exposure and incubation with an aminooxy-terminated poly(ethylene glycol), resulting in a 98% reduction in nonspecific protein adsorption. Protein patterning and assembly was demonstrated using streptavidin, biotinylated anthrax toxin receptor-1, and the protective antigen moiety of anthrax toxin and confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM demonstrated that 500 nm protein features were achieved. Because of the abundance of biotinylated proteins, this methodology provides a platform for protein immobilization and assembly for various applications in biotechnology. 相似文献

A sulfur HASC (alpha-hetero-atom substituted carbonyl) linker has been utilized in solid-phase approaches to oxindoles and tetrahydroquinolones. The route to oxindoles employs the first Pummerer cyclizations on solid phase, whereas the route to tetrahydroquinolones involves a microwave-assisted Heck reaction followed by a Michael cyclization. In both cases, the linker is cleaved in a traceless fashion by electron transfer from samarium(II) iodide. Atropisomeric N-methyl-N,N′-diaryl ureas may be obtained in enantiomerically enriched form by oxidative kinetic resolution of their sulfide derivatives. The atropisomeric sulfides may be obtained in up to 97:3 er and display high stability to racemisation (half-lives at 25 °C of up to 500 years). Preceding NMR experiments show that the conformation of tandem GA base pairs, an important recurrent non-canonical building block in RNA duplexes, is context dependent. The GA base pairs adopt "sheared" N3(G)-N6(A), N2(G)-N7(A) geometry in the r(CGAG)(2) and r(iGGAiC)(2) contexts while switching to "imino" N1(G)-N1(A), O6(G)-N6(A) geometry in the r(GGAC)(2) and r(iCGAiG)(2) contexts (iC and iG stand for isocytosine and isoguanine, respectively). As base stacking is likely to be one of the key sources of the context dependence of the conformation of GA base pairs, we calculated base stacking energies in duplexes containing such base pairs, to see if this dependence can be predicted by stacking energy calculations. When investigating the context dependence of the GA geometry two different conformations of the same duplex were compared (imino vs. sheared). The geometries were generated via explicit solvent MD simulations of the respective RNA duplexes, while the subsequent QM energy calculations focused on base stacking interactions of the four internal base pairs. Geometrical relaxation of nucleobase atoms prior to the stacking energy computations has a non-negligible effect on the results. The stacking energies were derived at the DFT-D/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. We show a rather good correspondence between the intrinsic gas-phase stacking energies and the NMR-determined GA geometries. The conformation with more favorable gas-phase stacking is in most cases the one observed in experiments. This correlation is not improved when including solvent effects via the COSMO method. On the other side, the stacking calculations do not predict the relative thermodynamic stability of duplex formation for different sequences. 相似文献

The chemistry of the anions dicyanamide and tricyanomethanide (dca and tcm, respectively) has produced a plethora of discoveries over the past few decades, particularly in relation to transition-metal coordination polymers with magnetic coupling. Over recent years there have been an increasing number of reports of heterofunctionalised cyano-containing anions, typically derivatives of dicyanomethanide. Our own group has been particularly concerned with the amide- and nitroso-functionalised anions carbamoyldicyanomethanide (cdm) and dicyanonitrosomethanide (dcnm), respectively. This feature article examines the fascinating diversity of materials and complexes that can be obtained using small cyano anions, ranging from coordination polymers to heterometallic clusters and hydrogen bonding networks. In particular, we focus on results from our own laboratories in the past few years. The magnetic properties of these materials are briefly discussed. 相似文献

A new family of optically pure tetrathiafulvalenium and tetraselenafulvalenium salts, D(3)[M(III)(S,S-EDDS)](2)·nH(2)O (where D = TTF, TSF; M = Co, Fe, Cr; EDDS = ethylenediaminedisuccinato), were synthesized electrochemically. These phases are semiconductors with conductivities between 6.9 × 10(-6) and 1.3 × 10(-5) S·cm(-1) (E(a)ca. 0.3 eV) for TTF and 2.8 × 10(-4) to 2.8 × 10(-5) S·cm(-1) (E(a)ca. 0.1 eV) for TSF compounds. While some crystals suffer from twinning, other well resolved structures consist of TTF/TSF stacks which, under the influence of the chiral anion, exhibit a periodic undulation described by an elliptical helix. The crystallographic data, along with computational work, indicate charge localization in the semiconducting motifs. 相似文献
