Oxygen K-edge fine structures of water by x-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy under pressure conditions

Fine structure of the oxygen K edge was investigated for water at ambient pressure, 0.16, 0.21, 0.27, 0.47, and 0.60 GPa using x-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy (XRS). Similarity in near-edge structures at 0.16 and 0.60 GPa suggests little difference in the electronic state of oxygen in the low-pressure and high-pressure forms of water. Yet, we observed significant variation of preedge structure of the XRS spectra with compression. The intensity of the preedge peak at 535.7 eV has a minimal value at around 0.3 GPa, indicating that the number of hydrogen bonding increases first and then decreases as a function of pressure.     

Fragmentation in doubly charged ion mass spectra of anhydropisatin and related compounds

The doubly charged ion mass spectra of anhydropisatin, 4-methoxyanhydropisatin, 3, 8, 9-trimethoxypterocarpen and 3, 4, 8, 9-tetramethoxypterocarpen were determined, and the fragmentation was explained by assuming that the paired electrons were partially localized in the fragmentations and by comparing the spectra with that of 3-(CD₃)-anhydropisatin. Conventional mass spectra of these compounds were very simple, but the doubly charged ion spectra were sufficiently characteristic for the reliable identification.     

Light-harvesting energy transfer and subsequent electron transfer of cationic porphyrin complexes on clay surfaces

A novel energy-transfer system involving nonaggregated cationic porphyrins adsorbed on an anionic-type clay surface and the electron-transfer reaction that occurs after light harvesting are described. In the clay-porphyrin complexes, photochemical energy transfer from excited singlet zinc porphyrins to free-base porphyrins proceeds. The photochemical electron-transfer reaction from an electron donor in solution (hydroquinone) to the adsorbed porphyrin in the excited singlet state was also examined. Because the electron-transfer rate from the hydroquinone to the excited singlet free-base porphyrin is larger than that to the excited singlet zinc porphyrin, we conclude that the energy transfer accelerates the overall electron-transfer reaction.     

Systematic Measurement of pd Breakup Cross Section Around Space Star

Space Star (SS) anomaly in nd breakup cross section was first reported in 1989 at E _n = 13 MeV (Strate et al. in Nucl Phys A 501:51, 1989), but its origin has not been found yet. In order to obtain suggestions for its origin, we made systematic measurements of pd breakup cross section around SS. In SS configuration, three outgoing nucleons form an equilateral triangle and the triangle is perpendicular to the beam axis. Necessity of the equilateral and perpendicular conditions of SS anomaly was investigated by systematic experiments. Also energy dependence of SS anomaly is being studied at energies from E _p = 7.5 to 13 MeV.     

A Unique Pathway for the 3-Aminobutyrate Starter Unit from l-Glutamate through β-Glutamate during Biosynthesis of the 24-Membered Macrolactam Antibiotic, Incednine

Incednine is a 24-membered macrolactam antibiotic produced by Streptomyces sp. ML694-90F3. A previous study demonstrated that its unique nitrogen-containing starter unit was derived from l-glutamate. To elucidate the missing link between l-glutamate and the starter unit, deuterium labeled amino acid feeding experiments were conducted. These experiments revealed that 3-[3-(2)H]aminobutyrate and β-[2,2,4,4-(2)H(4)]glutamate were incorporated into the starter moiety. The results indicate that a novel decarboxylation of β-glutamate to give 3-aminobutyrate is involved in incednine biosynthesis.     

Synthesis of Adamantane Derivatives. Xxiii. Facile Photo-Ring-Cleavage of 4-Homoadamantanone to Bicyclo[3.3.1] -Nonan-3 -Endo-Acetate

Type I (α-) and II cleavages are two of the best known photochemical processes of alkanone.² Extensive and intensive investigations have been done on both types of reactions in order to clarify the influence of structural changes on the reactivity, specificity, and efficiency of photoreactions of alkanones.³ The type I cleavage of medium-ring alkanones is believed to produce a radical pair, the fate of which will be determined by the ready formation of transition states for transfer of Ha, Hb, and recyclization. We now wish to report     

Anomaly of modal field in side-tunnel single-polarisation fibre

A noticeable anomaly of modal field in side-tunnel single-polarisation optical fibres is observed for some cross-sectional shapes. Accordingly, as hollow tunnels encroach on a core region, the field of the fundamental mode breaks up into a double peak. As a result of this transition, it closely resembles that of a higher-order mode.     

Robust parameter estimation with a small bias against heavy contamination

In this paper we consider robust parameter estimation based on a certain cross entropy and divergence. The robust estimate is defined as the minimizer of the empirically estimated cross entropy. It is shown that the robust estimate can be regarded as a kind of projection from the viewpoint of a Pythagorean relation based on the divergence. This property implies that the bias caused by outliers can become sufficiently small even in the case of heavy contamination. It is seen that the asymptotic variance of the robust estimator is naturally overweighted in proportion to the ratio of contamination. One may surmise that another form of cross entropy can present the same behavior as that discussed above. It can be proved under some conditions that no cross entropy can present the same behavior except for the cross entropy considered here and its monotone transformation.     

Some remarks on finite full transformation semigroups

High-speed 1.5 μm self-aligned constricted mesa lasers grownentirely by MOCVD

A self-aligning (SA) process technique to fabricate constricted mesa (CM) lasers is proposed. The controllability of GaInAsP active region volume and InP lateral confining layer widths were greatly improved. Lasers grown entirely by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) showed very small variation in threshold currents ( I_th=15.2±1.1 mA) and in stray junction capacitances (C=1.62±0.08 pF). A record bandwidth of 10 GHz in the 1.5 μm-wavelength region was demonstrated
