Efficient synthesis of sulfonic,phosphoric, and phosphinic esters employing alkylating polymer-bound reagents

The efficient esterification of various sulfonic acids and sulfonates using polymer-bound triazenes based on the triazene T2 linker is described. Esterification of enantiopure alpha-substituted sodium sulfonates was performed in the presence of an alkylating resin without racemization. Racemization is a serious drawback in the esterification route via sulfonyl chlorides because of intermediate sulfene formation. To demonstrate the versatility of this protocol, phosphoric and phosphinic acids have been converted into the corresponding esters as well. All products were obtained in good yield and excellent purities without any further purification steps.     

Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoclusters on Molecularly Modified GaAs

The elaboration of closed-packed monolayers of Au₅₅(PPh₃)₁₂Cl₆ clusters on oxidized and non-oxidized GaAs surfaces is reported. The first part of this work describes the use of silanethiol modified GaAs oxide surfaces to trap 18 nm gold colloids and Au₅₅(PPh₃)₁₂Cl₆ clusters. The surfaces characterized by AFM measurements present high-quality coverage on a quite long range for both metallic species. The second part is devoted to the elaboration of Au₅₅(PPh₃)₁₂Cl₆ cluster monolayers on non-oxidized p-type GaAs substrates, functionalized with dithiol molecules. AFM measurements demonstrate the presence of closed-packed two-dimensional arrangements of Au₅₅ clusters.     

Probing the surface polarity of native celluloses using genuine solvatochromic dyes

The surface polarity of native celluloses has been investigated by the following solvatochromic dyes: dicyano-bis (1,10)-phenanthroline iron (II) Fe(phen)2 (CN)2 (1), bis(4-N,N-dimethylamino)-benzophenone (2), and cou-marine 153 (3). Linear Solvation Energy (LSE) relationships and the UV/Vis data have been used to characterize the surface polarity of different native cellulose batches in terms of the empirical Kamlet–Taft polarity parameters (hydrogen bond acidity), (hydrogen bond basicity), and * (dipolarity/polarizability). , , *and calculated Reichardt's E T (30) values are reported for various native and regenerated cellulose samples with different degrees of crystallinity. The degree of crystallinity of the cellulose samples has been determined by X-ray. The microcrystalline environment of cellulose can be exactly parameterized in terms of the , and *values. It shows a fairly strong acidity and a low dipolarity/polarizability. For the amorphous sections smaller and larger * values are observed. The correspondence of the empirical polarity parameters determined has been discussed in relation to results from pyrene fluorescence and zetapotential measurements.     

Efficient synthesis of [3H]-sanglifehrin A via selective oxidation/reduction of alcohols at C31 and C35

[Reaction: see text]. Sanglifehrin A is a novel complex natural product showing strong immunosuppressive activity and remarkably high affinity for cyclophilin A. To assess its pharmacokinetic properties in vivo, an efficient synthetic route was developed to introduce a tritium label in position C35 of sangliferin A via an oxidation/reduction strategy. The synthetic approach is particularly attractive, because the C35-oxo intermediate 7 is available in good yield on large scale and the reducing agent, lithium tri-sec-butylborotritide, is readily available. An attempt to apply a similar strategy to the alcohol in position C31 led primarily to C31-epi-hydroxy sanglifehrin A under a variety of conditions.     

High temperature physical adsorption of gases on solids: a comparison of two-dimensional and three-dimensional treatments

Two theories of fluid adsorption are discussed and compared. One starts from the assumption of the existance of a strictly two-dimensional adsorbed phase on the adsorbent surface. The statistical mechanics of this model is solved in the Percus-Yevick approximation for both two dimensional and bulk phases. According to the second, three-dimensional treatment, the thermodynamic functions of adsorption are defined as surface excess functions, relative to the Gibbs dividing surface. Explicit results are given for hard spheres and a Lennard-Jones 6-12 gas in contact with a wall interacting via the Lennard-Jones 3-9 potential. The dependence of excess quantities upon the choice of the Gibbs dividing surface is also discussed.

LetX be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed fieldk. We repeat Bloch's construction of aG _m -biextension (torseur)E over CH _hom ^p (X)×CH _hom ^q (X) forp+q=dim(X)+1. First we show that in characteristic zeroE comes via pullback from the Poincaré biextension over the corresponding product of intermediate Jacobians which has been conjectured by Bloch and Murre. Then the relations betweenE and various equivalence relations for algebraic cycles are studied. In particular we reprove Murre's theorem stating that Griffiths' conjecture holds for codimension 2 cycles, i.e. every 2-codimensional cycle which is algebraically and incidence equivalent to zero has torsion Abel-Jacobi invariant.     

On stable geometries

Within the concept of projective lattice geometry we are considering the class of stable geometries which have also been introduced in [14]. The investigation of their basic properties will result in fundamental structure theorems which especially give a lattice-geometric characterization of free left modules of rank 6 over proper right Bezout rings of stable rank 2. This yields a proper generalization of previous results of ours.
