Explicit Formulas for Generalized Action–Angle Variables in a Neighborhood of an Isotropic Torus and Their Application

Different versions of the Darboux–Weinstein theorem guarantee the existence of action–angle-type variables and the harmonic-oscillator variables in a neighborhood of isotropic tori in the phase space. The procedure for constructing these variables is reduced to solving a rather complicated system of partial differential equations. We show that this system can be integrated in quadratures, which permits reducing the problem of constructing these variables to solving a system of quadratic equations. We discuss several applications of this purely geometric fact in problems of classical and quantum mechanics.     

Wavelength-switchable fiber laser using acoustic waves

We report a wavelength-switchable fiber ring laser that includes a Bragg grating-based acoustooptic superlattice modulator. Wavelength switching of the laser emission is achieved by controlling the peak reflectivity of the different reflection bands that appear on both sides of the Bragg wavelength when a longitudinal acoustic wave propagates along the grating.     

On the macroscopic optimization of multicell wireless systems with multiuser detection and multiple antennas - uplink analysis

In this paper, we consider a system with K single-antenna client users, n/sub B/ base stations (each base station has n/sub R/ antennas), as well as a centralized controller. A client user could be associated with a single base station at any time. All the base stations operate at the same frequency and have optimal multiuser detection per base station which cancels intracell interference only. We consider a general problem of uplink macroscopic resource management where the centralized controller dynamically determines an appropriate association mapping of the K users with respect to the n/sub B/ base stations over a macroscopic time scale. We propose a novel analytical framework for the above macroscopic scheduling problems. A simple rule is to associate a user with the strongest base station (camp-on-the-strongest-cell), and this has been widely employed in conventional cellular systems. However, based on the optimization framework, we found that this conventional approach is in fact not optimal when multiuser detection is employed at the base station. We show that the optimal macroscopic scheduling algorithm is of exponential complexity, and we propose a simple greedy algorithm as a feasible solution.     

Investigation of multicomponent fluoride optical materials in the UV spectral region: I. Single crystals of Ca1−x R xF2+x (R = Sc, Y, La, Yb, Lu) solid solutions

Crystalline materials that are transparent in the vacuum UV spectral region and currently used have been reviewed. Transmission of crystals of solid solutions with the fluorite structure Ca_1?x R _xF_2+x (R = Sc, Y, La, Yb, Lu) in the UV and vacuum UV spectral regions has been investigated. It is shown that application of different methods of purification of fluorides from some impurities can significantly improve the optical quality of fluoride multicomponent crystals in the short-wavelength spectral region.     

High performance laser with nanopatterned active layer by selective area epitaxy

Lasers containing a nanopatterned active layer demonstrating excellent threshold characteristics are presented. The nanopatterned active layer is fabricated using high-resolution electron beam lithography and selective-area metal organic chemical vapour deposition crystal growth. Results demonstrating an order of magnitude improvement over previous results are reported.
