Excitation of Waveguides with a Nonhomogeneous Filling

Radiation conditions are posed for an electromagnetic waveguide with a nonhomogeneous filling. The existence of a solution in a certain functional class is proved. A near-zone solution is obtained.     

Bounds and Inequalities for the Perron Root of a Nonnegative Matrix

In this paper, bounds and inequalities for the Perron root of a nonnegative matrix, extending and complementing the classical theorems of Frobenius and Ostrowski in terms of (deleted) row and column sums, are presented. All the results are derived by using the same approach, based on the monotonicity property of the Perron root. Bibliography: 12 titles.     

Catalytic Hydrosilylation of Furan, Thiophene, and Pyridine Aldimines

The addition of hydrosilanes (HSiEt₃, HSiMe₂Ph, H₂SiPh₂) to the CH=N bond of heterocyclic azomethines has been studied in the presence of monovalent complexes of rhodium and palladium. The effect on the reaction of the CF₃ group of the aldimines, which were obtained from O-, S-, and N-heteroaromatic aldehydes and 2-trifluoromethylaniline, has been clarified, as were other regularities of the processes being studied. A series of corresponding furans, thiophenes, and pyridine amines has been synthesized.     

Trace cocharacters and the Kronecker products of Schur functions

It follows from the theory of trace identities developed by Procesi and Razmyslov that the trace cocharacters arising from the trace identities of the algebra M_r(F) of r×r matrices over a field F of characteristic zero are given by TC_r,n=∑_λΛr(n)χ^λχ^λ where χ^λχ^λ denotes the Kronecker product of the irreducible characters of the symmetric group associated with the partition λ with itself and Λ_r(n) denotes the set of partitions of n with r or fewer parts, i.e. the set of partitions λ=(λ₁λ_k) with kr. We study the behavior of the sequence of trace cocharacters TC_r,n. In particular, we study the behavior of the coefficient of χ^(ν,n−m) in TC_r,n as a function of n where ν=(ν₁ν_k) is some fixed partition of m and n−mν_k. Our main result shows that such coefficients always grow as a polynomial in n of degree r−1.     

Evaluation of Polycation-Stabilized Lactate Oxidase in a Silica Sol–Gel as a Biosensor Platform

 Whereas glucose oxidase and related proteins are encapsulated readily in silica sol–gels, α-hydroxy enzymes such as lactate oxidase (LOx), are reported to be damaged by electrostatic interaction with these matrices. Based on a previous report, poly(ethyleneimine), PEI, was evaluated as a protecting compound under conditions suited to analytical measurements. With LOx and PEI co-encapsulated in a silica sol–gel, the enzyme retained 62% of its initial activity after 20 days. In the absence of PEI, activity was lost during the processing. Batch analytical measurements with enzyme-doped sol–gel yielded a linear response over the range 0.5–2.0 mM lactate and a detection limit of 0.03 mM lactate. Both simple incorporation of LOx in a silica sol–gel and an alternative protection method, blocking the ion-exchange sites on silica with La(III), failed. These negative results supported the hypothesis that the efficacy of PEI was related to its formation of a protective sheath around the enzyme. Author for correspondence. C 1 Quintic Splines on Type-4 Tetrahedral Partitions

Starting with a partition of a rectangular box into subboxes, it is shown how to construct a natural tetrahedral (type-4) partition and associated trivariate C ¹ quintic polynomial spline spaces with a variety of useful properties, including stable local bases and full approximation power. It is also shown how the spaces can be used to solve certain Hermite and Lagrange interpolation problems.     

Bicircular projections and characterization of Hilbert spaces

We prove that every JB* triple with rank one bicircular projection is a direct sum of two ideals, one of which is isometrically isomorphic to a Hilbert space.

     

Predictive control of periodic-review production inventory systems with deteriorating items

In this paper a predictive control strategy is applied to a periodic-review dynamic inventory system with deteriorating items. Given the current inventory level, we determine the optimal production rates to be implemented at the beginning of each of the following periods over the control horizon. The effectiveness of this approach is the use of future information of the inventory target level and the desired production rate, which are available, along the fixed horizon. The deterioration coefficient may be known or unknown and both cases are considered. In the case where it is unknown, the self-tuning predictive control is applied. The proposed control algorithms are illustrated by simulations.     

L-Curve and Curvature Bounds for Tikhonov Regularization

The L-curve is a popular aid for determining a suitable value of the regularization parameter when solving linear discrete ill-posed problems by Tikhonov regularization. However, the computational effort required to determine the L-curve and its curvature can be prohibitive for large-scale problems. Recently, inexpensively computable approximations of the L-curve and its curvature, referred to as the L-ribbon and the curvature-ribbon, respectively, were proposed for the case when the regularization operator is the identity matrix. This note discusses the computation and performance of the L- and curvature-ribbons when the regularization operator is an invertible matrix.
