Hyperplane arrangement cohomology and monomials in the exterior algebra

We show that if is the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, then the homology of has linear free resolution as a module over the exterior algebra on the first cohomology of . We study invariants of that can be deduced from this resolution. A key ingredient is a result of Aramova, Avramov, and Herzog (2000) on resolutions of monomial ideals in the exterior algebra. We give a new conceptual proof of this result.

     

On Norden Metrics which Are Locally Conformal to Anti-Kählerian Metrics

We build examples of Norden metrics on × S ¹, where R ^{2 n} _n is either a pseudosphere or a pseudohyperbolic space. These turn out to be locally conformal to flat anti-Kählerian metrics, strongly non anti-Kählerian, and with a parallel Lee form. Conversely, any connected complete anti-Hermitian manifold possessing these properties is shown to be locally analytically homothetic to × S ¹.     

The Order of Best Approximation in Some Classes of Functions

Starting from the equivalence between the Ditzian–Totik modulus and , where , in this article large classes of functions are introduced for which the modulus can be easily calculated. As a consequence, very good estimates for the bestapproximation are obtained. The attempts to estimate or calculate themodulus can be a very intricateproblem.     

Cross section for b-Jet production in &pmacr;p collisions at radicals = 1.8 TeV

Bottom-quark production in &pmacr;p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV is studied with 5 pb(-1) of data collected in 1995 by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b jets in the central rapidity region ( | y(b)|<1) as a function of jet transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, D0 results are found to be higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.     

Spin correlation in t&tmacr; production from p&pmacr; collisions at radicals = 1.8 TeV

The D0 collaboration has performed a study of spin correlation in t&tmacr; production for the process t&tmacr;-->bW(+)&bmacr;W-, where the W bosons decay to enu or &mgr;nu. A sample of six events was collected during an exposure of the D0 detector to an integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb(-1) of sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV p&pmacr; collisions. The standard model (SM) predicts that the short lifetime of the top quark ensures the transmission of any spin information at production to the t&tmacr; decay products. The degree of spin correlation is characterized by a correlation coefficient kappa. We find that kappa>-0.25 at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the SM prediction of kappa = 0.88.     

The meta-stable dip (MSD) effect in SOI FinFETs

The meta-stable dip (MSD) effect is demonstrated and characterized in SOI FinFETs. With ascending scan of front-gate voltage (V_G1), the magnitude of drain current (I_D) tends to be fixed within a specific region of the front-gate voltage and this leads to a dip of transconductance (g_m). The dip width can be modulated through a control of bias condition or measurement speed such as back-gate voltage (V_G2), drain voltage (V_D) and step size of the front-gate voltage. From the dual-gate transient measurement, it is found that the MSD effect is highly dependent on the floating-body effect. In SOI FinFETs, the MSD effect is significantly affected by the fin width due to the fringing electric field of the lateral gates.     

Sigma meson and phonon-like excitations of the instanton vacuum

The possible nature of two experimentally observed scalar mesons that are widely spaced in mass and whose special features may be caused by the excitations of the instanton liquid considered as a model of the QCD vacuum. It is shown that mass changes in the scalar sector may prove to be unexpectably large, even though the scale of such corrections to the dynamical quark mass is relatively small.     

Tunable single-mode fiber reflective grating filter

A single-mode fiber tunable reflective filter is demonstrated by translating a fan-shaped grating structure through the evanescent field of a side-polished fiber. Filter linewidths of about 1 nm were measured over tuning ranges in excess of 65 nm. Reflectivities as high as 88 percent were observed. Using the fiber filter as a feedback element, a multimode semiconductor laser was observed to oscillate in a single mode which could be discretely turned over a wavelength range of 26 nm.     

Elliptic functions and equations of modular curves

Let be a prime. We show that the space of weight one Eisenstein series defines an embedding into ${\mathbb P}^{(p-3)/2}X_1(p)$ for the congruence group that is scheme-theoretically cut out by explicit quadratic equations. Received: 8 November 2000 / Published online: 17 August 2001
