We study the virial expansion of mixtures of countably many different types of particles. The main tool is the Lagrange–Good inversion formula, which has other applications such as counting coloured trees or studying probability generating functions in multi-type branching processes. We prove that the virial expansion converges absolutely in a domain of small densities. In addition, we establish that the virial coefficients can be expressed in terms of two-connected graphs. 相似文献

While natural rubber is commonly considered as an incompressible material, this study shows how carbon black-reinforced natural rubber (NR-CB), when subjected to various mechanical loading conditions (uniaxial, hydrostatic, monotonic, cyclic), is affected by volume change. Experiments show a volume variation even for low straining values and a significant volume change for large elongations. Moreover, volume change can be either reversible or not, depending on the loading conditions. It is related to a competition between void growth, chain orientation, and stress softening. At a microscopic scale, in situ Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) examinations and image analysis allow one to record damage and microscopic volume change as a function of elongation. Therefore the volume change measured at the microscopic scale is equal to the macroscopic one. Based on the experimental results, this paper shows that the hypothesis of incompressibility is worth being revisited. Thus, a nearly compressible approach was considered, where the strain energy is assumed to be the sum of spherical and deviatoric parts that are both affected by damage. The model was then implemented in a finite-element code. Good agreement was obtained between experimental results and model predictions for low triaxiality test conditions. 相似文献

Over the past decade, RNA conformation has been shown to respond to external stimuli. Thus, dependent on the presence of a high affinity ligand, specifically designed ribozymes can be regulated in a classical allosteric way. In this scenario, a binding event in one part of the RNA structure induces conformational changes in a separated part, which constitutes the catalytic centre. As a result activity is switched on (positive regulation) or off (negative regulation). We have developed a hairpin aptazyme responding to flavine mononucleotide (FMN). Ribozyme activity is dependent on binding of FMN and thus is switched on in the presence of FMN in its oxidized form. Under reducing conditions, however, FMN changes its molecular geometry, which is associated with loss of binding and consequently down‐regulation of ribozyme activity. While in previous experiments sodium dithionite was used for reduction of FMN, we now present an assay for electrochemically induced activity switching. We have developed an electrochemical microcell that allows for iterative cycles of reduction/oxidation of FMN in an oxygen free atmosphere and thus for reversible switching of ribozyme activity. The reaction proceeds in droplets of 3 to 10 μL at micro‐ to nanomolar concentrations of the reaction components. 相似文献

Homopolymers of methacrylic acid (MAA), monoethyleneglycol methyl ether methacrylate (MEOMA), diethyleneglycol methyl ether methacrylate (MEO2MA), oligo(ethyleneglycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA475 and OEGMA1100) and oligo(ethyleneglycol) ethyl ether methacrylate (OEGEMA246) were synthesized with various chain lengths via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The homopolymers of MAA, MEOMA and OEGMA1100 did not show any cloud point (CP) in the range of 0–100 °C, whereas at a pH value of 7, the CPs were found to be 20.6, 93.7, and 20.0 °C for p(MEO2MA), p(OEGMA475) and p(OEGEMA246), respectively, with an initial monomer to initiator ratio of 50. Furthermore, statistical copolymer libraries of MAA with OEGMA475 and OEGMA1100 were prepared. The cloud points of the random copolymers of MAA and OEGMA475 were found to be in the range of 20–90 °C; surprisingly, even though the homopolymers of MAA and OEGMA1100 did not exhibit any LCST behavior, the copolymers of these monomers at certain molar ratios (up to 40% OEGMA1100) revealed a double responsive behavior for both temperature and pH. Finally, the cloud points were found to be in the range of 22–98 °C, measured at pH values of 2, 4, and 7, while no cloud point was detected at pH 10. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Most associate liquid crystals with their everyday use in laptop computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, and other electronic devices. However, in contrast to their rodlike (calamitic) counterparts, first described in 1907 by Vorl?nder, disklike (discotic, columnar) liquid crystals, which were discovered in 1977 by Chandrasekhar et al., offer further applications as a result of their orientation in the columnar mesophase, making them ideal candidates for molecular wires in various optical and electronic devices such as photocopiers, laser printers, photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, and holographic data storage. Beginning with an overview of the various mesophases and characterization methods, this Review will focus on the major classes of columnar mesogens rather than presenting a library of columnar liquid crystals. Emphasis will be given to efficient synthetic procedures, and relevant mesomorphic and physical properties.
