An anxiety reduction protocol was developed and evaluated for routine use with neurology and neuropsychiatry patients undergoing brain or spinal scans. Thirty five patients underwent standard procedures, with limited information given in advance. Twenty nine experimental patients received a booklet giving information about the scanning procedure and advice on cognitive strategies for anxiety reduction, a tape-recorded demonstration of scanner noise, a visit to the control room before entering the scanner, a device to signal for adjustment of music volume, precise timings of each scan, and a clock visible during scanning. Anxiety was measured before, during, and after scanning, using subjective ratings and a retrospective version of the Spielberger State Anxiety Scale. There was no difference in anxiety between groups immediately prior to the scan and immediately after entering the scanner. Patients in the experimental group were significantly less anxious during the scan than control patients, as measured by mean anxiety ratings made during the imaging procedure and by retrospective State Anxiety scores completed immediately after leaving the scanner. The results show that scan-related anxiety can be reduced by introducing these simple changes to MR imaging procedures, with minimal cost, no special training of staff, and no disruption of the running of the MR Unit.  相似文献

The secondary structure and topology of membrane proteins can be described by inspection of two-dimensional (1)H-(15)N dipolar coupling/(15)N chemical shift polarization inversion spin exchange at the magic angle spectra obtained from uniformly (15)N-labeled samples in oriented bilayers. The characteristic wheel-like patterns of resonances observed in these spectra reflect helical wheel projections of residues in both transmembrane and in-plane helices and hence provide direct indices of the secondary structure and topology of membrane proteins in phospholipid bilayers. We refer to these patterns as PISA (polarity index slant angle) wheels. The transmembrane helix of the M2 peptide corresponding to the pore-lining segment of the acetylcholine receptor and the membrane surface helix of the antibiotic peptide magainin are used as examples.  相似文献

Perchlorate ion (ClO4) is an environmental contaminant of growing concern due to its potential human health effects, impact on aquatic and land animals, and widespread occurrence throughout the United States. The determination of perchlorate cannot normally be carried out in the field. As such, water samples for perchlorate analysis are often shipped to a central laboratory, where they may be stored for a significant period before analysis. The stability of perchlorate ion in various types of commonly encountered water samples has not been generally examined—the effect of such storage is thus not known. In the present study, the long-term stability of perchlorate ion in deionized water, tap water, ground water, and surface water was examined. Sample sets containing approximately 1000, 100, 1.0, and 0.5 μg l−1 perchlorate ion in deionized water and also in local tap water were formulated. These samples were analyzed by ion chromatography for perchlorate ion concentration against freshly prepared standards every 24 h for the first 7 days, biweekly for the next 4 weeks, and periodically after that for a total of 400 or 610 days for the two lowest concentrations and a total of 428 or 638 days for the high concentrations. Ground and surface water samples containing perchlorate were collected, held and analyzed for perchlorate concentration periodically over at least 360 days. All samples except for the surface water samples were found to be stable for the duration of the study, allowing for holding times of at least 300 days for ground water samples and at least 90 days for surface water samples.  相似文献

[reaction: see text] We present an ab initio study of the acid-promoted hydrolysis reaction mechanism of N-formylaziridine in comparison with formamide. Since the rate of amide hydrolysis reactions depends on the formation of the tetrahedral intermediate, we focused our attention mainly on the reactant complex, the tetrahedral intermediate, and the transition state connecting these two stationary points. Geometries were optimized using the density functional theory, and the energetics were refined using ab initio theory including electron correlation. Solvent effects were investigated by using polarizable continuum method calculations. The proton-transfer reaction between the O-protonated and N-protonated amides was investigated. In acidic media, despite that the N-protonated species is more stable than the O-protonated one, it is predicted that both N-protonated and O-protonated pathways compete in the hydrolysis reaction of N-formylaziridine.  相似文献

A new bifunctional, triazine-based ligand has been designed with the aim to generate a copper(II) complex holding a TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy) moiety. The coordination compound obtained from the ligand 4-(2-(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)ethoxy)-6-(4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl)-N,N-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-amine (pypzt-1) and copper(II) bromide (i.e. complex 8) is capable of catalysing the selective, aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to 84% of benzaldehyde in 24 h. This "galactose oxidase activity" of the copper/TEMPO complex is observed as well for the conversion of the non-activated alkyl alcohol octan-1-ol to octanal with a yield of 29% after the same reaction time. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 8 shows that its crystal lattice contains [Cu(I)Br(2)](-) anions which appear to be stabilised by means of both anion-pi and hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, the solid state structure of 8 exhibits (lone-pair)-pi interactions between the nitrogen atom of an acetonitrile molecule and a triazine ring. The magnetic properties of 8 have been investigated by EPR and magnetic susceptibility measurements.  相似文献

The copper(II) complex of a novel rhodamine-azamacrocycle conjugate binds to the CXCR4 chemokine receptor and competes effectively against anti-CXCR4 monoclonal antibodies. The copper macrocycle unit adopts a trans-II configuration in the solid state.  相似文献

This paper reports a number of recent developments in the intercalation chemistry of Al(OH)(3). From Rietveld refinement and solid-state NMR, it has been possible to develop a structural model for the recently reported [M(II)Al(4)(OH)(12)](NO(3))(2)·yH(2)O family of layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The M(2+) cations occupy half of the octahedral holes in the Al(OH)(3) layers, and it is thought that there is complete ordering of the metal ions while the interlayer nitrate anions are highly disordered. Filling the remainder of the octahedral holes in the layers proved impossible. While the intercalation of Li salts into Al(OH)(3) is facile, it was found that the intercalation of M(II) salts is much more capricious. Only with Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn nitrates and Zn sulfate were phase-pure LDHs produced. In other cases, there is either no reaction or a phase believed to be an LDH forms concomitantly with impurity phases. Reacting Al(OH)(3) with mixtures of M(II) salts can lead to the production of three-metal M(II)-M(II)'-Al LDHs, but it is necessary to control precisely the starting ratios of the two M(II) salts in the reaction gel because Al(OH)(3) displays selective intercalation of M nitrate (Li > Ni > Co ≈ Zn). The three-metal M(II)-M(II)'-Al LDHs exhibit facile ion exchange intercalation, which has been investigated in the first energy dispersive X-ray diffraction study of a chemical reaction system performed on Beamline I12 of the Diamond Light Source.  相似文献
