Some Orthogonalities in Approximation Theory

In approximation theory, a number of quantities are interrelated via orthogonal transformations. The revelation of these orthogonalities allows one to obtain useful relations and, in particular, to use known theorems on the Fourier coefficients. The paper considers this approach in application to the Fourier transforms of finite functions, to the best L₂-approximations, and to trigonometric polynomials with coefficients in a vector space. Poly[n]prismanes: a family of stable cage structures with half-planar carbon centers

A series of bi[n]prismanes and tri[n]prismanes (n = 3-6) containing n and 2n, respectively, tetracoordinated carbon centers with nonclassical bisphenoidal (half-planar) configuration has been designed computationally.

Planar Flexural Vibrations and Dissipative Heating of Laminated Rectangular Plates

The coupled thermomechanical dynamic behavior of a heterogeneous solid is investigated by an example of laminated inelastic rectangular plates subjected to forced vibration and dissipative heating. The problem is solved in two formulations: complete and approximate. The complete formulation uses generalized flow theory to describe the inelastic properties of the material. The approximate formulation employs a model based on the idea of complex moduli. Special distributions of the field variables and amplitude–frequency responses of the rectangular plate are analyzed. The effect of the loading level on the mode shape and stress distribution is studied as well. A good agreement between the results obtained in the complete and approximate formulations is pointed out.     

Electron structures of C-substituted ethyleneimines and certain aspects of the mechanism of nucleophilic opening of three-membered rings 1. Dimerization of C-substituted ethyleneimines

Conclusions Quantum-chemical calculations show the substituted carbon atom to be the preferred center for nucleophilic attack on 2-methyl- and 2-aminomethylethyleneimines (2-MEI and 2-AMEI), ethyleneimine ring opening resulting from rupture of the weakened C-N bonds at these atoms.Separation of the dimer fractions from polymerized 2-MEI and 2-AMEI followed by chromatographic and chromato-mass spectral analyses showed the structures and relative amounts of the various dimers to be consistent with the results of the calculations.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 7, pp. 1498–1503, July, 1977.The authors wish to thank V.
