Accurate closed-form formulas for the electromagnetic parameters of squared coaxial lines

This article presents a set of accurate closed-form formulas for the electromagnetic parameters (inductance (L), capacitance (C) and characteristic impedance (Z_c)) for squared coaxial lines with circular and square inner conductor. The analytical expressions, deduced from rigorous analysis by the finite element method (FEM), method of moments (MoM) and curves fitting techniques, can be easily implemented in CAD simulation tools, to design components for wireless communication. This study presents accurate and suitable general expressions for all squared coaxial lines with a wide range of outer to inner conductors ratio between 1.2 and 10. As an application, we present the design of 60 GHz branch line couplers.     

Bio-inspired delayed evolutionary game dynamics with?networking applications

We study in this paper some evolutionary games where competition between individuals from a large population occurs through many local interactions between randomly selected individuals. We focus on games that have the property of possessing a single interior evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS). We study in particular the effect of the time delays on the convergence of evolutionary dynamics to the ESS in an evolutionary game in which each pure strategy is associated with its own delay. In particular, we study a multiple access game as well as a Hawk and Dove game. We study the properties of the ESS in these games and also the effect of time delays on the convergence of various bio-inspired evolutionary game dynamics to the ESS.     

CMOS RF switched capacitor bandpass filter tuned by ring VCO

A new RF switched capacitor bandpass filter and its command circuit made up of a ring voltage controlled oscillator with ‘XOR’ gates are proposed. Implemented in a standard CMOS technology, this circuit is intended to be used in a subset of professional mobile phone applications [380–520 MHz]. Experiments carried out on a prototype show a tunable center frequency range of 260 MHz [240–500 MHz], with a quality factor that can be as high as 300.     

HSDN‐GRA: A hybrid software‐defined networking‐based geographic routing protocol with multi‐agent approach

We propose in this paper a Hybrid Software‐Defined Networking‐based Geographical Routing Protocol (HSDN‐GRA) with a clustering approach. It takes into account three different criteria to select the best relay to send data: (1) the contact duration between vehicles, (2) the available load of each vehicle, (3) and the log of encountered communication errors embedded in each cluster head. The multi‐criteria strategy allows the selection of the most reliable vehicles by avoiding communication problems and ensuring connection availability. Once the hybrid control plane has found out the next eligible neighbor, the data plane will be in charge of dividing and sending data. To validate our approach, HSDN‐GRA has been modeled and implemented in JADE, a multi‐agent platform, to be compared to other multi‐agent based protocols. Simulation results show that HSDN‐GRA achieves good performance with respect to the average routing overhead, the packet drop rate, and the throughput.     

Al0.3Ga0.7As-GaAs microwave resonant tunneling oscillator

We describe the design of a microwave oscillator using resonant tunneling diodes. The devices are fabricated from Al_0.3Ga_0.7As-GaAs double barrier hetero-structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Design criteria improving current drivability are established from a theoretical study of tunneling transmission probabilities. Very high peak current densities up to 3.10⁴ A/cm², favorable for high frequency operation as an oscillator, have been achieved experimentally. The devices exhibit stable oscillations at liquid nitrogen temperature and at room temperature when the tunnel diode oscillator is constructed with a stabilizing network.     

Hexahistidine‐Tagged Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes (His6‐tagSWNTs): A Multifunctional Hard Template for Hierarchical Directed Self‐Assembly and Nanocomposite Construction

While a hexahistidine affinity tag can be introduced at protein termini or internal sites by standard molecular biology procedures for purification, immobilization, or labeling of proteins, here the versatility of this concept is exploited for the chemical preparation of novel hexahistidine‐tagged single‐walled carbon nanotubes (His₆‐tagSWNTs), a novel hard template useful for solubilizing, assembling, processing, and interfacing SWNTs in aqueous conditions. Water‐soluble and exfoliated His₆‐tagSWNTs are prepared and fully characterized. This functional molecular module is able to interact via robust physisorption (π?π stacking) with the sidewall of SWNTs and combines the versatility of small, water‐soluble reporters (His₆) for hierarchical directed self‐assembly (HDSA) and construction of nanocomposites. It is demonstrated that metal coordination bonds with Ni(II) can be used for the supramolecular self assembly of His₆‐tagSWNTs, generating complex reticulated networks and architectures. The His₆‐tagSWNTs hard template nanohybrid is further utilized for directed self‐assembly with silica nanoparticles. The versatility of the novel hybrids opens a new era for the rational design, smart (bio)functionalization, processing, interfacing, and self assembling of carbon nanotubes for the construction of multicomposites and more complex systems with controllable spatial organization and programmable properties for a wide range of applications in biology, nanoelectronics, and catalysis.     

I Saw You in the News: Mediated and Direct Intergroup Contact Improve Outgroup Attitudes

This study extends the boundary conditions of mediated contact theory by (a) differentiating between mediated contact quantity and quality, (b) examining whether mediated contact exerts effects above and beyond direct contact, and (c) offering causal and generalizable evidence on the effects of exposure to numerous individual outgroup members in news media. We match individual‐level data from a representative panel survey with data on the amount of coverage about members from two outgroups and with the results from validated sentiment analysis. Mediated contact, and especially its quantity, improved outgroup attitudes independently of direct contact. These findings emerged for both outgroups and across two outcome measures.     

Isolation and X-ray crystal structure of tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids from Calycotome villosa Subsp. intermedias

Two tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids were extracted from the alkaloid fraction of a methanol extract of the seeds of Calycotome Villosa Subsp. intermedia. Their structures were established as (R)-1-hydroxymethyl-7-8-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- isoquinoline (1) and (S)-7-hydroxymethyl-2-3-dimethoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydroisoquinoline chloride (2) by spectroscopic techniques and X-ray diffraction analysis.
