Operators of wireless infrastructures should maintain their users “always-best-connected”. This concept means that applications
should be offered to users at the best possible Quality of Service (QoS) level, taking into account profile, context and policy
information. The profiles provide the user requirements and preferences, the terminal capabilities, and the application requirements.
The policies provide the objectives, constraints imposed by various stakeholders, for instance the network operator (NO).
The context of operation designates relevant applications, available networks and their QoS capabilities. The “always-best-connectivity”
concept can be achieved by directing user terminals to the most appropriate networks of the heterogeneous infrastructure of
the NO. In this respect, advanced terminal management functionality is required. This paper presents management mechanisms
for utility-based cognitive network selections. The utility is used for expressing the user desire for a QoS level. Cognition
mechanisms are applied for learning the QoS capabilities of candidate networks, and therefore increasing the reliability and
seamlessness of the network selections. Extensive results are provided, which show the behaviour of the scheme in terms of
network selections made, and computational effort required for the acquisition of the knowledge. 相似文献

Future networks will need to accommodate a significantly augmented user demand, mainly stemming from the wireless and mobile domains. In general, the emerging radio landscape will comprise multiple, collaborating radio access networks (RANs) able to operate a plethora of diverse radio access technologies (RATs), variant types of mobile terminals (MTs), with the ability to choose among various supported RANs/RATs and, in addition, both devices and networks with dynamic spectrum access capabilities that allow the sharing and/or optimization of spectrum usage among different systems. The above will stress network operators for developing mechanisms to confront the challenges and to leverage the opportunities posed by such a versatile radio environment. In particular, the situation calls for adaptive and flexible management paradigms that are able to dynamically manage network elements and terminals, thus ensuring the great availability and efficient usage of spectrum and other radio resources. Framed within the above, this paper considers a cognitive network management architecture, which is destined for optimized management of future wireless networks operating in versatile radio environments, and presents a performance evaluation methodology, which was set up for measuring the signalling loads that the operation of the architecture will bring to the managed network. The methodology is analytically described, and useful results with respect to the signalling load produced for management signalling purposes in an indicative scenario are presented and analysed. This paper presents a novel, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-compatible, force sensor suitable for cardiac catheterization procedures. The miniature, fiber-optic sensor is integrated with the tip of a catheter to allow the detection of interaction forces with the cardiac walls. The optical fiber light intensity is modulated when a force acting at the catheter tip deforms an elastic element, which, in turn, varies the distance between a reflector and the optical fiber. The tip sensor has an external diameter of 9 Fr (3?mm) and can be used during cardiac catheterization procedures. The sensor is able to measure forces in the range of 0-0.85?N, with relatively small hysteresis. A nonlinear method for calibration is used and real-time MRI in vivo experiments are carried out, to prove the feasibility of this low-cost sensor, enabling the detection of catheter-tip contact forces under dynamic conditions. 相似文献

We propose new burst assembly schemes and fast reservation (FR) protocols for Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks that are based on traffic prediction. The burst assembly schemes aim at minimizing (for a given burst size) the average delay of the packets incurred during the burst assembly process, while the fast reservation protocols aim at further reducing the end-to-end delay of the data bursts. The burst assembly techniques use a linear prediction filter to estimate the number of packet arrivals at the ingress node in the following interval, and launch a new burst into the network when a certain criterion, different for each proposed scheme, is met. The fast reservation protocols use prediction filters to estimate the expected length of the burst and the time needed for the burst assembly process to complete. A Burst Header Packet (BHP) packet carrying these estimates is sent before the burst is completed, in order to reserve bandwidth at intermediate nodes for the time interval the burst is expected to pass from these nodes. Reducing the packet aggregation delay and the time required to perform the reservations, reduces the total time needed for a packet to be transported over an OBS network and is especially important for real-time applications. We evaluate the performance of the proposed burst assembly schemes and show that a number of them outperform the previously proposed timer-based, length-based and average delay-based burst assembly schemes. An indirect boundary element method using dipole distribution is employed in order to model discontinuities inside the flow region. The problem of flow under a dam is treated with a sheet-pile in its foundation. The discontinuity across the sheet-pile is demonstrated, a general boundary element procedure for a mixed problem is outlined and the coefficients of the linear system are given in analytical form.
