Singlet oxygen chemistry in water: a porous vycor glass-supported photosensitizer

Singlet molecular oxygen [1O2 (1Deltag)] is generated cleanly in aqueous solution upon irradiation of a heterogeneous complex, meso-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine (1) adsorbed onto porous Vycor glass (PVG). The cationic photosensitizer 1 tightly binds onto PVG and gives a stable material, which does not dissociate 1 into the surrounding aqueous phase. The production of 1O2 was measured by monitoring the time-resolved 1O2 (1Deltag) phosphorescence at 1270 nm. Indirect analysis of 1O2 generation was also carried out with the photooxidation of trans-2-methyl-2-pentenoate anion, which afforded the corresponding hydroperoxide. Sensitizer-1-impregnated PVG gives rise to a new singlet oxygen generator but more importantly provides a heterogeneous system for use in water.     

Simultaneous determination of simvastatin and simvastatin acid in human plasma by LC-MS/MS without polarity switch: application to a bioequivalence study

A simple, specific and sensitive LC-MS/MS assay for simultaneous determination of simvastatin (SV) and its active beta-hydroxy acid metabolite, simvastatin acid (SVA) in human plasma was developed using a statin analog as internal standard (IS). The method was validated over a dynamic linear range of 0.20-100.00 ng/mL for SV and 0.10-50.00 ng/mL for SVA with correlation coefficient r > or = 0.9987 and 0.9989, respectively. The analytes and IS were extracted from 500 microL aliquots of human plasma via liquid-liquid extraction using methyl tert-butyl ether and separated through an Aquasil C18 column (100 mm x 2.1 mm, 5 microm). Detection of analytes and IS was done by MS/MS with a turbo ion spray interface operating in positive ion and selective reaction monitoring acquisition mode. The total chromatographic run time was 3.0 min. Flash freezing of the aqueous phase was an added advantage during liquid-liquid extraction, which considerably reduced time and labour. The method was extensively validated for its accuracy, precision, recovery, stability studies and matrix effect. The method was successfully used for bioequivalence study of 40 mg SV tablet formulation in 12 human subjects under fasting condition.     

Highly sensitive method for the determination of JI-101, a multi-kinase inhibitor in human plasma and urine by LC-MS/MS-ESI: method validation and application to a clinical pharmacokinetic study

A highly sensitive, rapid assay method has been developed and validated for the estimation of JI-101 in human plasma and urine using LC-MS/MS-ESI in the positive-ion mode. The assay procedure involves extraction of JI-101 and alfuzosin (internal standard, IS) from human plasma/urine with a solid-phase extraction process. Chromatographic resolution was achieved on two Zorbax SB-C(18) columns connected in series with a PEEK coupler using an isocratic mobile phase comprising acetonitrile-0.1% formic acid in water (70:30, v/v). The total run time was 2.0 min. The MS/MS ion transitions monitored were 466.20 → 265.10 for JI-101 and 390.40 → 156.10 for IS. The method was subjected to rigorous validation procedures to cover the following: selectivity, sensitivity, matrix effect, recovery, precision, accuracy, stability and dilution effect. In both matrices the lower limit of quantitation was 10.0 ng/mL and the linearity range extended from ~10.0 to 1508 ng/mL in plasma or urine. The intra- and inter-day precisions were in the ranges 1.57-14.5 and 6.02-12.4% in plasma and 0.97-15.7 and 8.66-10.2% in urine. This method has been successfully applied for the characterization of JI-101 pharmacokinetics in cancer patients.     

Performance modeling of MPEG‐4 video streaming over IEEE 802.11 using distribution coordination function

Delivering video streaming over wireless Internet is becoming increasingly popular. However, most of the research studies focused on the modeling analysis of system performance such as saturation throughput and channel utilization. Perceived quality of video streaming cannot be assessed solely based on the results of analytical models. In this paper, we propose a model to assess the perceived quality of MPEG‐4 video streaming over IEEE 802.11 distribution coordination function (DCF)‐based wireless local area networks. The analysis of our proposed model considers not only effects of losses such as collision loss from channel access competition but also wireless loss caused by wireless interferences. Moreover, the impact of the loss of specific MPEG‐4 video frames is also taken into account in the performance analysis. The model was validated by comparing our performance results with results obtained from simulation and analytical models. The results show that our proposed model is able to predict the perceived quality of MPEG‐4 video streaming over DCF‐based WLAN more accurately than other models. Microstrip triangular patch antenna fabricated on LiTiZn ferrite substrate and tested in the X band range

An experimental study of microstrip triangle patch antenna designed and fabricated on LiTiZn ferrite substrate is presented. This antenna geometry has been optimized with IE3D and lithographed on 2 mm thick LiTiZn ferrite substrate. LiTiZn polycrystalline substrate has been synthesized using solid state reaction technique and further characterized for microwave application. We have computed various important antenna parameters such as return-loss, bandwidth, directivity, gain, radiation power, etc. for synthesized ferrite as well as on RT-duroid substrate. A comparison of these results has also been presented.     

Synthesis and characterization of thiophene and fluorene based donor–acceptor conjugated polymer containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole units for light-emitting diodes

A new donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymer (PDTOF) containing 3,4-didodecyloxythiophene, fluorene and 1,3,4-oxadiazole units is synthesized by using Wittig reaction methodology. The synthesized polymer is characterized by ¹H NMR, FTIR, GPC, and elemental analysis. The optical energy band gap of the polymer is found to be 2.42 eV as calculated from the onset absorption edge. The electrochemical studies of PDTOF reveal that, the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymer are ?5.45 eV and ?3.58 eV, respectively. The polymer is thermally stable up to 320 °C. Polymer light-emitting diode devices are fabricated with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PDTOF/Al using PDTOF as the emissive layer. The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum of the device showed green emission with CIE coordinate values (0.34, 0.47). By current density–voltage characteristics, threshold voltage of the PLED device is found to be 6.5 V.     

Influence of surface waves on plasma high-order harmonic generation

The influence of surface plasma waves on high-order harmonic generation from the interaction of intense lasers with overdense plasma is analyzed. It is shown that the surface waves lead to the emission of harmonics away from the optical axis, whereas the high-order on-axis harmonics are lowered in intensity. Our simulation results indicate that surface plasma wave generation plays a crucial role in surface high-order harmonic generation experiments. Furthermore, a novel surface plasma wave generation process different from the well-known two-surface wave decay is observed in the highly relativistic regime.

Practical Access to meta-Substituted Anilines by Amination of Quinone Imine Ketals Derived from Anisidines: Efficient Synthesis of Anti-Psychotic Drugs

Reversing the conventional site-selectivity of C−H activation provides efficient retrosynthetic disconnections to otherwise unreactive bonds. Described herein is the Brønsted acid-catalyzed reaction that selectively performs meta-amination of anisidines with aliphatic-, heterocyclic- and aromatic amines in a one-pot procedure. In addition to dramatically simplifying the synthesis of meta-substituted anilines, our approach has the advantage of the scalability and remarkable functional group tolerance, including late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical compounds and natural products. The control experiments and detailed computational analysis provide insight into the reaction mechanism and the origin of meta-selectivity. The protocol extended to the synthesis of challenging tri-aminated arenes and successfully applied for the efficient synthesis of 5-HT6 receptor antagonists, the anti-psychotic drugs viz.. SB-214111, SB-258510, and specifically, anti-schizophrenic drug SB-271046.
