The polarization of the recoil proton from the reactionγp→π ⁰ p has been measured for photon energies between 600 and 1,200 MeV and pion c.m. angles between 90° and 150°.     

Josephson junctions with 1 ?m dimensions and with picosecond switching times

Josephson junctions with 1 × 3 ?m dimensions have no resonances. For a current density of about 1000 A/cm2, the risetime of the switching transient from zero to the gap voltage is below 38 ps.

Biaxial Testing of Sheet Materials at High Strain Rates Using Viscoelastic Bars

A dynamic bulge testing technique is developed to perform biaxial tests on metals at high strain rates. The main component of the dynamic testing device is a movable bulge cell which is directly mounted on the measuring end of the input bar of a conventional split Hopkinson pressure bar system. The input bar is used to apply and measure the bulging pressure. The experimental system is analyzed in detail and the measurement accuracy is discussed. It is found that bars made of low impedance materials must be used to achieve a satisfactory pressure measurement accuracy. A series of dynamic experiments is performed on aluminum 6111-T4 sheets using viscoelastic nylon bars to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed experimental technique. The parameters of the rate-dependent Hollomon–Cowper–Symonds J2 plasticity model of the aluminum are determined using an inverse analysis method in conjunction with finite element simulations.     

Geometric calibration of ERS satellite SAR images

Geometric calibration of the European Remote Sensing (ERS) Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) slant range images is important in relation to mapping areas without ground reference points and also in relation to automated processing. The relevant SAR system parameters are discussed and calibrated by using the European Space Agency (ESA) transponders at Flevoland. The resulting accuracy of the slant range images corresponds to 10 m horizontally on the ground. The results are verified by using runway intersections and corner reflectors surveyed with differential GPS techniques. Based on a seven-year ERS-1 and a four-year ERS-2 time series, the long term stability is found to be sufficient to allow a single calibration covering the entire mission period. A descending and an ascending orbit tandem pair of the ESA calibration site on Flevoland, suitable for calibration of ERS SAR processors, is described to allow other researchers to geometrically calibrate their processing systems     

Towards laser spectroscopy of 24Mg+ ions at CRYRING@ESR

CRYRING@ESR is a newly installed low energy ring integrated in the GSI accelerator facility. In this paper we describe developments of the laser spectroscopy experiment at CRYRING@ESR. In the past commissioning beam time in November, the recently installed data acquisition system was tested. Light emitted by excited residual gas atoms was detected by a single-photon tagging technique. The time dependence of the ion beam intensity was investigated with this tool.
