On the dynamic properties of “elastic” interactions between wave solitons consisting of a few field oscillation cycles

By the numerical simulation of the dynamics of the optical circularly polarized field in the Kerr-type medium, it has been shown that the binary collisions between wave solitons consisting of a few field oscillation cycles with respect to their energy characteristics exhibit the properties of the collisions of Schrödinger solitons. The corresponding spectral characteristics change according to the conservation of the soliton-like structure of the envelop. In dependence on the absolute difference of the field phases, there are three different interaction regimes: the passage of one structure through another, their repulsion, and the exact replication of one initial wave structure by another.     

Hierarchically Ordered Polymer Films by Templated Organization of Aqueous Droplets

Hierarchically ordered structures facilitate the incorporation of diverse functions simultaneously. The present report introduces a simple and novel strategy for producing hierarchically ordered polymeric films. Hierarchical ordering of aqueous droplets on a polymer solution is realized by the imposition of physical confinement via various shaped gratings. After drying of the solution, well‐ordered hierarchical structures were fabricated in the remaining polymer film. The size of the grating structure and the lattice size of spontaneous hexagonally packed aqueous pores comprise two different length scales, thereby offering multiscale ordering. Interfacial wetting of the polymer solution to the grating surface was crucial in terms of obtaining a highly ordered structure that can be tuned by dissolving a small amount of surfactant in the polymer solution. The present novel approach provides a new opportunity for lithography‐free fabrication of complex hierarchical structures.     

A new VOF‐based numerical scheme for the simulation of fluid flow with free surface. Part II: application to the cavity filling and sloshing problems

Finite element analysis of fluid flow with moving free surface has been performed in 2‐D and 3‐D. The new VOF‐based numerical algorithm that has been proposed by the present authors (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids, submitted) was applied to several 2‐D and 3‐D free surface flow problems. The proposed free surface tracking scheme is based on two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby‐cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed numerical algorithm has been applied to 2‐D and 3‐D cavity filling and sloshing problems in order to demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the scheme. The proposed numerical algorithm resolved successfully the free surfaces interacting with each other. The simulated results demonstrated applicability of the proposed numerical algorithm to the practical problems of large free surface motion. It has been also demonstrated that the proposed free surface tracking scheme can be easily implemented in any irregular non‐uniform grid systems and can be extended to 3‐D free surface flow problems without additional efforts. Infine Functions, Nonsmooth Alternative Theorems and Vector Optimization Problems

In this paper we introduce a new notion of infine nonsmooth functions and give several characterizations of infineness property. We prove alternative theorems with mixed constraints (i.e., inequality and equality constraints) being described by invex-infine nonsmooth functions. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a solution of a vector optimization problem involving mixed constraints to be a properly efficient solution.

New method for analysis of electromagnetic coupling to an angled two-strip transmission line

The electromagnetic coupling to an angled two-strip transmission line is analysed to constructing an angled two-plate transmission line equivalent to the original geometry, and then solving the cylindrical transmission line equations of the original source analytically. The results agree with the numerical values of the circuit-concept approach.<>     

Performance of GaAs-AlGaAs V-grooved inner stripe quantum-well wirelasers with different current blocking configurations

GaAs-AlGaAs V-grooved inner stripe (VIS) quantum-well wire (QWW) lasers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition with different current blocking configurations, n-blocking on p-substrate (VIPS), p-n-p-n blocking on n-substrate (VI(PN)_nS) and p-blocking on n-substrate (VINS) have been fabricated and characterized. The VIPS QWW lasers show the most stable characteristics with effective current confinement: one of the lasers shows fundamental transverse mode, lasing up to 5 mW/facet, typical threshold current of 39.9 mA at 818.5 mm, an external differential quantum efficiency of 24%/facet, and characteristic temperature of 92 K. The current tuning rate was almost linear at 0.031 mm/mA, and the temperature tuning rate was measured to be 0.14 nm/°C. Comparison of the light output versus current characteristics of the lasers with different current blocking configurations is presented here     

4- and 13-GHz tuned amplifiers implemented in a 0.1-μm CMOStechnology on SOI, SOS, and bulk substrates

Four- and 13-GHz tuned amplifiers have been implemented in a partially scaled 0.1-1 μm CMOS technology on bulk, silicon-on-insulator (SOI), and silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) substrates. The 4-GHz bulk, SOI, and SOS amplifiers exhibit forward gains of 14, 11, and 12.5 dB and F_min's of 4.5 (bulk) and 3.5 db (SOS). The 13-GHz SOS and SOI amplifiers exhibit gains of 15 and 5.3 dB and F_unn's of 4.9 and 7.8 dB. The 4-GHz bulk amplifier has the highest resonant frequency among reported bulk CMOS amplifiers, while the 13-GHz SOS and SOI amplifiers are the first in a CMOS technology to have tuned frequencies greater than 10 GHz. These and other measurement results suggest that it may be possible to implement 20-GHz tuned amplifiers in a fully scaled 0.1-1 μm CMOS process     

Optimum 4-Transmit-Antenna STBC/SFBC with Angle Feedback and a Near-Optimum 1-Bit Feedback Scheme

A 4-antenna transmit diversity scheme based on space time/frequency block coding (STBC/SFBC) with 1-bit feedback is proposed. We first describe the optimum scheme with angle feedback. We then identify the condition under which choosing between only two choices of angles effectively eliminates the larger between the real and imaginary parts of the interference term. Simulation shows that the 1-bit feedback scheme achieves near-optimum performance.     

Image flow segmentation and estimation using displaced spatial gradient

There are two main causes of inaccuracies in estimating image flows using gradient based techniques. One is the erroneous measurement of gradients in brightness and the other is the blurring of motion boundaries which is caused by the smoothness constraint. In the Letter, the gradient measurement error of conventional methods is analysed and a new technique based on this analysis proposed.<>
