A new phenanthroindolizidine alkaloid from Tylophora indica

A new phenanthroindolizidine alkaloid, 3-O-demethyl tylophorinidine (VI), was isolated from the aerial (leaves and stem) parts of Tylophora indica and characterized using different spectral techniques. Gel chromatography and reverse phase preparative HPLC were used for sample purification. The new alkaloid, VI, was screened for anticancer activity against a panel of different cancer cell lines and it showed significant anticancer activity with IC₅₀ value in the range of 0.89?C1.40 ??M.     

Electric and electrochemical properties of solid LiH2PO4

Electrical and electrochemical properties of solid LiH₂PO₄ conductor were investigated in the temperature range from room temperature to 373 K. It was found that high conductivity throughout the temperature range, with activation energy 17.23 kJ/mol, originates from the movement of hydrogen ions (protons). The movement of protons in the correlation with phosphate groups rotation was considered. The slopes of Tafel lines and exchange current densities both for cathodic hydrogen and anodic oxygen evolution were determined (by means of usual electrochemical kinetic methods) at various temperatures. The energy of activation at the equilibrium potentials both for the cathodic and the anodic processes have been assessed to be 17.23 kJ/mol (0.18 eV) and 2.9 kJ/mol (0.03 eV), respectively.     

Synthesis of novel ferrocene-containing 1,3-thiazinan-2-imines: One-pot reaction promoted by ultrasound irradiation

A simple one-pot synthesis of new ferrocene-containing 1,3-thiazinan-2-imines from 3-arylamino-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-ols and phenyl isothiocyanate has been developed. The key intermediate β-hydroxy thioureas were generated in situ using ultrasound irradiation and subsequent cyclization was achieved by the addition of acetic acid. The scope of the reaction towards various 3-arylamino-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-ols has been explored and the corresponding 3-aryl-6-ferrocenyl-N-phenyl-1,3-thiazinan-2-imines were obtained in moderate to high yields (52–90%).     

Thermal analysis and kinetics of the copper-lead matte roasting process

In this paper, the results of copper-lead matte investigations are presented. Investigated copper-lead matte is intermediate product of the lead production in TREPCA-Zvečan. In the first part of the paper characterization of starting material is presented, consisting of: chemical composition analysis (XRQ), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and diffractometry (XRD). Thermal properties of investigated matte were determined using differential thermal analysis (DTA) at characteristic temperatures. Using results of induced analysis, mechanism of matte oxidation process was determined. In the second part of the paper kinetic parameters describing oxidative roasting of copper-lead matte are presented. For activation energy calculations, non-isothermal methods defined by Kissinger and Ozawa were used [1, 2]. Kinetic equation describing oxidation process was determined using Sharps method of reduced half time of reaction [3].     

Developments of Asymmetric Synthesis Mediated by Chiral Sulfur Reagents

Abstract

Our work on the thio-Claisen rearrangement mediated by an adjacent sulfinyl group is reviewed. The substrates could easily be prepared on a large scale from diacetone-D-glucose. The rearrangement was effected with a diastereoselectivity of 95:5, in favor of the (S,S) or the (R,R) isomer. An approach to natural bis(lactones) was investigated, using a halolactonization reaction and a second [3,3] sigmatropic shift, again mediated by the sulfinyl group. The second part deals with the catalytic enantioselective benzylidenation of aldehydes, mediated by chiral sulfur ylides. We have introduced simple C ₂ symmetric thiolanes for that purpose. The procedure is very practical and enantiomeric excesses up to 96% have been reported for the model of stilbene oxide. A series of ferrocenyl sulfides with planar chirality has also been investigated, leading to unexpected diastereoselectivities and enantiomeric excesses up to 94%.     

Stability and bifurcation of an SIS epidemic model with treatment

An SIS epidemic model with a limited resource for treatment is introduced and analyzed. It is assumed that treatment rate is proportional to the number of infectives below the capacity and is a constant when the number of infectives is greater than the capacity. It is found that a backward bifurcation occurs if the capacity is small. It is also found that there exist bistable endemic equilibria if the capacity is low.     

Temporal order discrimination of tonal sequences by younger and older adults: the role of duration and rate

The effect of tone duration and presentation rate on the discrimination of the temporal order of the middle two tones of a four-tone sequence was investigated in young normal-hearing (YNH) and older hearing-impaired (OHI) listeners. The frequencies and presentation level of the tone sequences were selected to minimize the effect of hearing loss on the performance of the OHI listeners. Tone durations varied from 20 to 400 ms and presentation rates from 2.5 to 25 toness. Two experiments were conducted with anisochronous (nonuniform duration and rate across entire sequence) and isochronous (uniform rate and duration) sequences, respectively. For the YNH listeners, performance for both isochronous and anisochronous sequences was determined primarily by presentation rate such that performance decreased at rates faster than 5 toness. For anisochronous tone sequences alone, the effects of rate were more pronounced at short tone durations. For the OHI listeners, both presentation rate and tone duration had an impact on performance for both isochronous and anisochronous sequences such that performance decreased as rate increased above 5 toness or duration decreased below 40 ms. Temporal masking was offered as an explanation for the interaction of short durations and fast rates on temporal order discrimination for the anisochronous sequences.     

Experimental investigation and thermodynamic prediction of the Al–Ge–Zn phase diagram

The knowledge of the phase diagram of the Al?CGe?CZn ternary system is of importance in the development of high temperature soldering materials. In this study, the phase diagram of the Al?CGe?CZn ternary system was calculated by the calculation of phase diagrams method using binary thermodynamic parameters included in the COST MP0602 thermodynamic database. Chosen alloys with compositions along two vertical sections with molar ratio Al/Ge?=?3/1 and 1/3 were measured using DTA (differential thermal analysis). The experimentally determined phase transition temperatures from this work and phase equilibria data from literature were compared with calculation results and good mutual agreement was noticed.     

Mechanistic studies of the addition of carbonyl compounds to tetramesityldigermene

The mechanism of the addition of carbonyl compounds to digermenes was investigated by examining the reaction between tetramesityldigermene and two mechanistic probes: trans-2-phenylcyclopropane carbaldehyde and trans,trans-2-methoxy-3-phenylcyclopropane carbaldehyde. In each reaction, two diastereomers of the formal [2+2] cycloadduct between the aldehyde and the digermene were obtained. These findings, together with the results of a recent theoretical study, indicate that the addition of carbonyl compounds to digermenes proceeds via a mechanism involving a zwitterionic intermediate.
