Chemoprevention, a relatively new and promising strategy to prevent cancer, is defined as the use of natural dietary compounds and/or synthetic substances to block, inhibit, reverse, or retard the process of carcinogenesis. The chemopreventive effects elicited by these natural dietary compounds are believed to include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory activity, induction of phase II enzymes, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest. Many mechanisms have been shown to account for the anticarcinogenic actions of natural dietary compounds; attention has recently been focused on intracellular-signaling cascades as common molecular targets for various chemopreventive natural dietary compounds. In this critical review, we will summarize current knowledge on natural dietary compounds that act through the signaling pathways and modulate gene expression to induce detoxifying enzymes, programmed cell death, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative effects, thus providing evidence for these substances in cancer chemopreventive action (128 references). 相似文献

A novel single-step sol-gel approach for the preparation of beta-CD-bonded silica monolithic electrochromatographic columns is established. The porous silica networks were fabricated inside fused-silica capillaries using sol-gel processing of tetramethoxysilane and an organfunctional silicon alkoxide that contains beta-CD. Scanning electron micrographs and nitrogen adsorption-desorption data showed that these functional monolithic columns have double pores structures with micrometer-size co-continuous through-pores and silica skeletons with open mesopores. The beta-CD monolithic columns have successfully been applied to the separation of several neutral and negatively charged isomers by CEC. The column performance was evaluated by using positional isomers of naphthalenedisulfonic acid as model compounds. A plate height of less than 10 mum for the first eluted isomer of naphthalenedisulfonic acid was obtained at an optimal flow rate (0.47 mm/s) of the mobile phase. Moreover, the columns have been proved to be stable for more than 100 runs during 3 months period and show reasonable column reproducibility. 相似文献

Post-fabrication thermal-annealed ZnO nanowires (NWs) in an oxidizing (or a reducing) ambient were investigated using transient photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our findings reveal an ultrafast hole-transfer process to the surface adsorbed oxygen species (e.g., O(2)(-)) occurring within a few hundred picoseconds (ps) in the air-annealed samples; and an ultrafast electron-transfer process to charged oxygen vacancies (i.e., V(O)(2+)) occurring within tens of ps in the H(2)-annealed samples. Contrary to the common perception that the band edge emission (BE) dynamics are strongly influenced by the carrier trapping to the green emission related defect states (i.e., V(Zn)), these above processes compete effectively with the ZnO BE. Hole trapping by ionized V(Zn), which occurs in an ultrashort sub-ps-to-ps timescale (and hence limits its effective hole capture radius), however, has less influence on the BE dynamics. Importantly, our findings shed new light on the photoinduced charge transfer processes that underpins the novel properties of enhanced photocatalytic activity, photovoltaic performance, and photoconductivity response of ZnO NWs, thereby suggesting a strategy for tailoring the ultrafast carrier dynamics in ZnO NW-based devices. 相似文献

Fiber tracking in diffusion tensor magnetic resonance images (DTIs) reveals 3-D structural connectivity of the brain conveniently and thus is a viable tool for investigating neural differences. Unfortunately, local noise, image artifacts and numerical tracking errors during integration-based techniques are cumulative. Prematurely terminated fibers and under-sampled fiber bundles result in incomplete reconstruction of white matter fiber tracts and hence incorrect anatomical measurements. Quantitative cross-subject tract analysis, which is critical for abnormality detection, is complicated by inefficient and inaccurate tract reconstruction and normalization from fiber bundles. Because of the above problems, we propose a parcellation method that aims for lower sensitivity to initialization and local orientation error by directly segmenting full white matter tracts (Fasciculography), rather than reconstructing individual curves, from diffusion tensor fields. A fast, robust volumetric, and intrinsically normalized solution is achieved by noise-filtering using a generic parametrized tract model to prevent premature tract termination. At the same time, orientation information reduces the search space, significantly speeding up the tract parcellation process with less human intervention. Detailed comparisons against streamline tracking, shortest-path tracking, and nonrigid registration using synthetic and real DTIs confirmed the superior properties of Fasciculography. Since a normalized tract can be delineated interactively in a just few seconds using the proposed method, accurate high volume tract comparisons become feasible. 相似文献
