Spatial and temporal variations in vegetation dielectric properties strongly influence the microwave backscatter characteristics of forested landscapes. This paper examines the relationship between xylem tissue dielectric constant, xylem sap flux density, and xylem sap chemical composition as measured in the stems of two Norway Spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) trees in the Fichtelgebirge region of Northern Bavaria, Germany. Dielectric constant and xylem sap flux were monitored continuously from June through October 1995, at several heights along the tree trunks. At the end of the measurement series, each tree was harvested, and its xylem sap extracted and analyzed to determine the concentrations of amino acids and cations. Results show that the sap flux density was correlated with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) at all heights in the stem. In contrast, the xylem tissue dielectric constant is influenced by VPD but can exhibit a significant temporal lag relative to changes in VPD. This lag varies with position along the tree trunk. The temporal variability of the dielectric constant is compared with both trees at several positions along the tree trunks. Results of xylem sap chemical analysis are presented. We show that spatial and temporal variability in the xylem tissue dielectric constant is influenced not only by water content, but by variations in xylem sap chemistry as well. This has important implications for microwave remote sensing of forested landscapes, as useful information may be acquired regarding stand physiology and water relations and where variations in dielectric properties within individual trees and across geographic areas can be significant error sources for forest inventory mapping.  相似文献

We prove the unique existence of the solution (u, p) of the system (1.1) in the Sobolev spaceHk + 3 × Hk + 2provided that the derivatives of the data of the problem are sufficiently small, wherek ≥ 0 is any integer. The proof follows from an analysis of the linearized problem, the solvability of the continuity equation, and the Schauder fixed point theory. Parametric DC measurements on pseudomorphic AlGaAs/InGaAs modulation-doped field-effect transistors (MODFETs) were carried out over the 300-405 K temperature range. A gradual channel device model was developed to simulate the temperature dependent behavior and assist in the interpretation of the characteristics. The simulations are shown to provide good predictive ability and confirm the physical reasons why the zero temperature coefficient point of a MODFET occurs only for gate bias voltages below the threshold voltage  相似文献

In four-color fluorescence-based automated DNA sequencing, a 4×4 filter matrix parameterizes the relationship between the dye-intensity signals of interest and the data collected by an optical imaging system. The filter matrix is important because the estimated DNA sequence is based on the dye intensities that can only be recovered via inversion of the matrix. Here, the authors present a calibration method for the estimation of the columns of this matrix, using data generated through a special experiment in which DNA samples are labeled with only one fluorescent dye at a time. Presents the Satellite Communications Network Expert (SaNE), a knowledge-based aid designed to provide engineering support for fault diagnosis. The SaNE is composed of two elements: a satcom network model, which simulates the structure and functionality of a system based loosely upon a large military satcom network, and a diagnostic component, which uses knowledge- and model-based reasoning techniques to analyse system anomalies and diagnose possible causes for the alarms such networks generate. The development cycle is described, emphasising lessons learnt during development and testing and the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques applied. The goal of the SaNE project is primarily commercial acceptance rather than innovation. The authors illustrate how novel concepts can be implemented in a practical system without compromising this goal  相似文献

We report a 7.6-mW single-frequency fiber laser operating at 1545 nm, using for the first time an Er3+:Yb3+ doped fiber and a fiber grating output coupler. The laser did not exhibit self-pulsation, which is a typical problem in short three-level fiber lasers, and had a relative intensity noise (RIN) level below -145.5 dB/Hz at frequencies above 10 MHz. The linewidth of the laser was limited by the relaxation oscillation sidebands in the optical spectrum and was typically less than 1 MHz  相似文献

Ion implantation of boron is used to create n on p photodiodes in vacancy-doped mercury cadmium telluride (MC.T). The junction is formed by Hg interstitials from the implant damage region diffusing into the MC.T and annihilating Hg vacancies. The resultant doping profile is n+/n-/p, where the n+ region is near the surface and roughly coincides with the implant damage, the n- region is where Hg vacancies have been annihilated revealing a residual grown-in donor, and the p region remains doped by Hg vacancy double acceptors. We have recently developed a new process modeling tool for simulating junction formation in MC.T by ion implantation. The interstitial source in the damage region is represented by stored interstitials whose distribution depends on the implant dose. These interstitials are released into the bulk at a constant, user defined rate. Once released, they diffuse away from the damage region and annihilate any Hg vacancies they encounter. In this paper, we present results of simulations using this tool and show how it can be used to quantitatively analyze the effects of variations in processing conditions, including implant dose, annealing temperature, and doping background.  相似文献

We propose and evaluate a medium-access control (MAC) protocol for synchronous cellular packet direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA). The protocol is designed for handling a variety of multimedia traffic types in an integrated wireless-access network (IWAN). For instance, the protocol is suited for carrying multiple traffic types of different priorities. An analytical model for the equilibrium state has been developed for the proposed protocol. A comparative evaluation of the protocol is done for three different radio frequency bandwidths currently under consideration for personal communication services (PCS), i.e., 1.25 MHz, 5 MHz, and 10 MHz. Our results demonstrate that the proposed protocol is both robust and flexible for the intended IWAN applications. It offers a significant multiplexing gain as the bandwidth increases  相似文献

Open circuit voltage (OCV) measurements in H2O/air concentration cells at T<580 K using Yb-doped SrCeO3 electrolyte indicate that under these conditions, protons are transported through the electrolyte as -ve ions, possibly as hydroxyl (OH) ions. The H+ ionic transport, which is generally reported, becomes the dominant mode for H2O/air concentration cells at temperatures greater than 750 K or when H2O/air electrodes are replaced by H2/Ar, and the anomalous OCV sign disappears. The combination of low temperature and the presence of hydrogen and oxygen as provided by the H2O/air system appears to be necessary for the postulated hydroxyl ion electrode reactions to take place. In addition to OCV measurements, results from impedance spectroscopy are used to provide evidence in support of the suggested hydroxyl ion mode of protonic transport under the specified conditions. These findings are directly relevant in the development of novel humidity sensors in the temperature range 450–580K and is reported in a separate paper in this conference. We report on a cw mode-locked non-critically phase matched KTP optical parametric oscillator synchronously pumped by a picosecond Ti:Sapphire laser. High average signal output power of up to 950 mW over a large tuning range has been achieved. For this OPO the influence of resonator-length detuning on the output power, pulse duration and spectral bandwidth has been investigated. The measured data are in good agreement with the results of a numerical simulation using a split-step Fourier method which considers the group-velocity mismatch, the group-velocity dispersion and the self-phase modulation. The numerical simulation also describes the measured strong pump depletion and its influence on the OPO output and efficiency.  相似文献
