The authors modify a non-perturbative variational approach based on the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity to calculate the periods of relativistic oscillators with even polynomial potentials. The optimization of the variational parameter is adapted by introducing additional free parameters whose values are set using the ultrarelativistic limit of the period as a boundary condition. Compact general approximations for the potentials , and prove to be accurate over the whole solution domain and even for large values of m.  相似文献

Background

We have recorded responses from single neurons in murine visual cortex to determine the effectiveness of the input from the two murine cone photoreceptor mechanisms and whether there is any unique selectivity for cone inputs at this higher region of the visual system that would support the possibility of colour vision in mice. Each eye was stimulated by diffuse light, either 370 (strong stimulus for the ultra-violet (UV) cone opsin) or 505 nm (exclusively stimulating the middle wavelength sensitive (M) cone opsin), obtained from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the presence of a strong adapting light that suppressed the responses of rods.

Results

Single cells responded to these diffuse stimuli in all areas of striate cortex. Two types of responsive cells were encountered. One type (135/323 – 42%) had little to no spontaneous activity and responded at either the on and/or the off phase of the light stimulus with a few impulses often of relatively large amplitude. A second type (166/323 – 51%) had spontaneous activity and responded tonically to light stimuli with impulses often of small amplitude. Most of the cells responded similarly to both spectral stimuli. A few (18/323 – 6%) responded strongly or exclusively to one or the other spectral stimulus and rarely in a spectrally opponent manner.

Conclusion

Most cells in murine striate cortex receive excitatory inputs from both UV- and M-cones. A small fraction shows either strong selectivity for one or the other cone mechanism and occasionally cone opponent responses. Cells that could underlie chromatic contrast detection are present but extremely rare in murine striate cortex.  相似文献

Recent analyses of cosmological data suggest the presence of an extra relativistic component beyond the Standard Model content. The Higgs–Dilaton cosmological model predicts the existence of a massless particle – the dilaton – associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance and undetectable by any accelerator experiment. Its ultrarelativistic character makes it a suitable candidate for contributing to the effective number of light degrees of freedom in the Universe. In this Letter we analyze the dilaton production at the (p)reheating stage right after inflation and conclude that no extra relativistic degrees of freedom beyond those already present in the Standard Model are expected within the simplest Higgs–Dilaton scenario. The elusive dilaton remains thus essentially undetectable by any particle physics experiment or cosmological observation.  相似文献

We report the study of transport and magnetic properties of the YbB6–δsingle crystals grown by inductive zone melting. A strong disparity in the low temperature resistivity, Seebeck and Hall coefficients is established for the samples with the different level of boron deficiency. The effective parameters of the charge transport in YbB6–δ are shown to depend on the concentration of intrinsic defects, which is estimated to range from 0.09% to 0.6%. The pronounced variation of Hall mobility μH found for bulk holes is induced by the decrease of transport relaxation time from τ ≈ 7.7 fs for YbB5.994 to τ ≈ 2.2 fs for YbB5.96. An extra contribution to conductivity from electrons with μH≈ –1000 cm2 V–1 s–1 and the very low concentration n /nYb≈ 10–6 discovered below 20 K for all the single crystals under investigation is suggested to arise from the surface electron states appeared in the inversion layer due to the band bending. We analyse one-loop radiative corrections to the inflationary potential in the theory, where inflation is driven by the Standard Model Higgs field. We show that inflation is possible provided the Higgs mass mHmH lies in the interval mmin<mH<mmaxmmin<mH<mmax, where mmin=[136.7+(mt−171.2)×1.95] GeVmmin=[136.7+(mt171.2)×1.95] GeV, mmax=[184.5+(mt−171.2)×0.5] GeVmmax=[184.5+(mt171.2)×0.5] GeV and mtmt is the mass of the top quark. In the renormalization scheme associated with the Einstein frame the predictions of the spectral index of scalar fluctuations and of the tensor-to-scalar ratio practically do not depend on the Higgs mass within the admitted region and are equal to ns=0.97ns=0.97 and r=0.0034r=0.0034 correspondingly.  相似文献

In this article, various energies and geometries of pure platinum nanoparticles and those of platinum nanoparticles with adsorbed OH were investigated. Fourteen different platinum clusters of 3–40 atoms were studied using spin-unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) with a double numerical plus polarization basis set. This range of sizes gave enough information for establishing the general trends that were the primary goal of the study. Three different shapes of platinum clusters were presented, and the effect of cluster size on binding energy, total energy, and HOMO–LUMO energy gap was investigated. Subsequently, same calculations were performed for those selected Pt clusters with OH adsorbate on the surface. The results show that the stability of both the pure clusters and the clusters with adsorbed OH molecule increases with an increase of cluster size. This fact indicates that direct influence of the size of Pt cluster on the reaction rate is possible, and the understanding of how cluster size would affect binding energy is important. As expected, the effect of cluster size on total energy of molecule was shown to be a linear function independent of cluster type. We also found that optimized (stable) Pt clusters were bigger in size than that of the initial clusters, or clusters with bulk geometry.  相似文献
